Since December 31st Slafkovsky has gone 12-21-33 in 42 games. Quite impressive for a 19 year old. He's also made huge strides in puck battles and play away from the puck.

Habs Potential Goalie of the Future Jacob Fowler had a Shutout to lead Boston College to a 4-0 Victory over the University of Michigan . They will play Denver in the Final , who eliminated Lane Hutson and the Boston University Terriers 2-1 in OT .

then last night Logan Mailloux gets his nhl debut and does very well for himself while Hutson gets game two and home game one and becomes the crowd darling with his unreal puck control skills
seen enough in two games to say get Matheson off the PP1.... Lane Hutson is the real deal
very interesting off season ahead... if we factor Reinbacher in as being potentially ready for some NHL duty in 24-25 there is just too big a glut of dmen.. especially young dmen and Hughes has to move 1 or 2 to shore up the holes up front
still not sold on Primeau in nets tho.. not sure what he was doing on either the Veleno or the Sprong goals last night

Reinbacher in the AHL, leaving Harris, Barron, and Kovacevic as trade bait.

If they are serious about making a run at a playoff spot or at least getting close, Hutson Mailloux and Reinbacher likely start AHL. Mailloux is the closest to being ready and all 3 still need work away from the puck. They finished 29th in GA despite goalies with very good goals saved metrics, they need to cut 30-40 GA in order to have a sniff of a playoff spot, that won't happen with rookies in their top 4. They need Guhle to get stronger and stay healthy and Xhekaj to keep progressing. I think it would be wayyy too soon to give up on Barron, his upside is too high and he only turned 22 in the fall. Guys like Harris and Struble I have no issue moving in a deal for a young top 6 forward. Primeau definitely didn't have his best game, but he still made a lot of hard saves. I think his ceiling is higher than Montembault, better athlete, better laterally and 3 years younger. Overall a great year for him as a rookie behind a poor defensive team, .910 save% puts him about 16th in the NHL, quite impressive.

I forgot about Struble - I really like him ... probably would put him ahead of Xhekaj to be honest. I still think that out of the Harris-Barron-Kovacevic-Struble-Xhekaj group you can move two this summer - either in a package for an impact forward, or for a decent pick. That would leave you with Matheson, Savard, Guhle, plus three of those five, and all of the young studs pushing at the door (Reinbacher-Mailloux-Hutson-Engstrom) ... still a crowded blueline. Obviously the return on some of them would be higher than on others ... but we have a very deep blueline, and need impact up front - IMO need to convert that equity while its value is high.

I think Barron might have the highest ceiling, but also the lowest floor of the group. Not sure that he reaches his ceiling with the Habs given the guys around him competing for the same role ... I think he could be a PP1 type d-man in the NHL some day, but will it happen in Montreal ahead of a guy like Hutson? He could also end up a guy who is an NHL/AHL tweener ...

Xhekaj has more upside than Struble IMO, bigger, more offense and much more intimidating. Barron being a righty plus his skating and offensive upside makes him hard to trade. Once Savard is gone there is no other RHD on the way up after Reinbacher and Kovacevic. Guys like Harris and Guhle can play RH side but you don't want only 1 RHD in your core 7.

At the end of the day, there are reasons to like all of them. Nothing you are saying I really disagree with. But we won't be able to keep them all, so I just hope that whichever ones we move, we manage to move at a time that maximizes the value we can get for them, and that we end up really liking what we get back. Just an example, but let's say someone really loves Xhekaj, and is willing to give you 2-3 x what the market will offer for Struble ... I could live with the big return on Xhekaj, and the thought of Struble being a third pair d-man for us moving forward.

The issue with trading Xhekaj is, IMO when you go from rebuild to playoffs, he's the type of guy that costs a ton to acquire and you need guys like that at playoff time. The Habs went to the final at least in part due to guys like Weber Edmundson Chiarot being big and long and very hard to play against. If you want to carry a 5,9: guy like Hutson, you need a nasty 6'4" guy in your top 4.

Arizona wins their final game and the Habs move into 5th overall pick pre draft lottery.
