So he is essentially will be replacing 2 players ? Staholn and a Defenceman ? Yeah this would create a scenario where there would be no ice time left for one of the younger D. It probably opens up an overage spot as it pushes Shortall down the depth chart even further as well.

If Cibulka doesn't return as a 20 it's just another disaster asset waste. At least he isn't drafted currently, but I'm sure some team takes a flyer on him as an OA this draft so that's a bit of a moot point. More and more we seem to see imports be willing to play in the CHL as an overager vs going home so I don't think the idea an NHL team will draft and sign him and turn him pro is much to worry about. This would be a later round pick who could play a top role on a CHL contender and give the NHL team time to make their decision. But there's still many reasons to not be a huge fan and thats before knowing the price. The buying of 19yr olds from the middle of the league when there's an 11 point gap to the top 5 and just a 5 point gap from the bottom 5. Rolling into next year with a plan of an import/overager as 1 player rather then utilizing those roles for 2 players. But hey, with a better PP and a little bit of luck we can be the 7th best team in the league and get a contender in round 2 assuming we win a 50/50 1st round matchup. How can that plan not have a lineup for tickets on Monday morning?

You move guys you can now and next year and have someone like burbidge as a 20 and lavoie, shields and milota as your 19 year old pillers plus the rest of the young guys. The you dont have tl completely empty the cupboard on trades to go for it.

It seems like such a logical move based around common sense considering we have such a solid core and all signed with no reporting issues but our GM has literally come out and said he can't keep that core together. This GM can't sit still long enough and let things unfold. All these high picks moved and we're still trying to find offense. We're again doing what i'm said over and over repeatedly for many years: Not seeing or understandings where we sit within the league and our conference. We can think as highly as we want about ourselves but our results and the competitions results are dictating we should be getting younger and not put ourselves on a colission course with BC or Halifax in round 2 assuming we even win round 1.

Simon only cares about money and butts in seats, but if you do it the proper way, it'll happen naturally. Sly is trade crazy and always has been but coupled with the simons micro managing, its a recipe for failure.

so from what I'm seeing Sly's plan to be is to buy this year in hopes to form the core and potentially make the 2nd/3rd round then next year go all in with the core and buy more in hopes to win.
Look at how many deals Sly did in the 2017-2018 season and 2021-2022 season when he tried to go all-in for both. One was a hit, one was a miss, but he paid BIG both times...It wouldn't shock me if he does much of the same for the Eagles heading into next season.
This 2023-2024 Eagles season reminds me of the 2016-2017 season the Titan were good and made the 2nd round and almost the 3rd round and they added some pieces that would make them competitive in the playoffs but not exactly ready to go all the way and then eventually paid more the following season to win the title in 2017-2018.
The difference here compared to the Eagles this year is that the Titan at the time in 2016-2017 still had a good record finishing 6th in the league. The Eagles buying from the middle of the pack to hope to potentially be more competitive then next year hope the core is ready for the next step and buy more to go all-in next season is a bit riskier and could end up being a total disaster....hope it works out for you's

Well i'll ask you. How are things in Bathurst since winning it all? Has the business improved? Was there any carryover at all from winning it all to the following season/rebuild? We know the answers. We're a market that when given a proper rebuild have naturally and organically supported the team. Where people want to get to know the players and watch them develop into something collectively as a team. That builds the desire to go to the rink. If that desire only exists during 1 spring every 8-10 years with a team of rentals, I guess i'll see you for those 2-3 rounds of great hockey every decade becomes the mentality. The idea that a small market GM comes out and lists a 7 player core where 2 could be considered among the elite in the league and follows it by saying it can't be kept together because his 9th place team has bigger things in mind is something I have a tough time understanding.

The fans left again during that time and didn't entirely come back when the team was competitive again in 2020-2022 but this was also covid hindered years so that didn't help. However another all-in occurred, but this time failed terribly after a 2nd round sweep by the Islanders. Now we're 2 years in again and this rebuild has been more rough then the first one as now we don't have a clear direction and Dwyer is left picking up the pieces to the mess that was made. Yes we have some talented players but no one to truly build around. I agree and understand completely where you're coming from, the way this team is being built is super odd and left scratching some heads.

Applying Sly's 2018 blue print to this year, he would acquire something like: Luneau (top D on the market), Mateiko (top import), St-Hillaire (top end starter), Minville (top tier non-OA), and Mianscum. It would be amazing to see, but Cape Breton would have virtually nothing left afterwards.

I think Sly is very interested in aqquiring tyler peddle from Dru. I feel a new home is what he needs and Cape fits that build i dont know what the cost would be taking he is a former 2nd overall pick but with 13 pts in 33 games this Year it could come at a good discount. With 8pts in his last 10 games he seems to have maybe found his groove but nothing is out of the question as Dru is all in this year and cant have him finding a slump again.

The Eagles wouldn't be a good landing spot for Peddle if he was traded this was discussed before in another thread but alot of fans soured on him here in Cape Breton thinking it was another Nic Roy/Shane Bowers situation during his Q draft year, add in his offensive struggles earlier this season (which hopefully he's figured out for himself) if not and he was traded here and continue to struggle the fans would probably be on his back pretty quickly which is the last thing the young man would need. If he was to be traded Charlottetown would probably be a better spot for him they'd obviously want him to contribute offensively but they'd possibly be more patient there with him than we would be here and Charlottetown and Drummondville have been good trading partners in the past.

That could make sense! Dru could use an upgrade as a 20 and the islanders give them what they need in Horth.

So for those who read it the trade period article the Eagles released a few days ago was a bit confusing in the way it was written Sly saying he didn't want to move guys like Ricard,Shields,Lavoie,Etc... but the next sentence saying he wouldn't be able to keep them together.
This article in the CB Post from a few days ago I found was better written and I just wanted to pull a few paragraphs from it.
First this - “Our goal will be to turn to our offence in any shape or form that we can,” said Couturier. “I think we need a guy who can quarterback the power play and I think that’s one thing we have to address.”
Well rumours have 19yo Czech defenceman Tomas Cibulka headed here after the World Junior's so assuming the deal happens there's your Powerplay QB.
Next about trading our prospects - Although Couturier wants to use the trade period to improve his team, he doesn’t want to touch the core of the club or its up-and-coming prospects like Luke Foley, Rory Pilling, Alexis Toussaint, Will Murphy and Logan Quinn.
“I think we like our group this year, but we also like what’s coming as well out of that group for the next couple of years – we’re not going to go crazy,” said Couturier.
And finally about the 2024 SJ 1st - “It will take a lot for me to trade that pick and I say a lot,” said Couturier. “Right now, it’s a lock that we’re not going to trade it, I don’t want to say 100 per cent because I like to leave my window open as far as anything great that could happen during the trade period.”
These last two points I hope people hold Couturier to as he says they're not going to go crazy trading prospects and while not a 100% lock says it would take alot for him to trade SJ's 2024 1st, if he strays from these points he should be questioned heavily on it.
