I think this deserves its own thread. Mooseheads finally pulled the trigger. Like Moncton, it was long awaited. Interesting times in the Maritimes as the two teams with highest attendance are searching for a head coach at the same time. I wonder if that makes things a bit more expensive for them. Too early for rumors I assume?

Since the team is at the start of a rebuild, I guess they’ll take the time to find the the right candidate now.

Moose would be best to find a guy who is willing to grow with the team into the next window. We also need some consistency to establish some long term culture/identity. This is going into the 8th season in 10 years with a new bench boss.
MacKenzie staying on is interesting, him and Heelis came in together.

No body is surprised. The only part I am a little surprised about is Brad Mackenzie was safe. I personally would have cleaned house. I wonder if he might be the front runner for the job. I’m going to throw out another name that I know Cam reached out to last summer. AJ Maclean. He’s an alumni and has been an assistant coach in the AHL for close to decade and maybe is looking for a chance to be a head coach.

I hate saying this about someone losing their job but good. The coaching carousel continues...

So know that often the best guy with young players and to grow with is not always the one who will get them over a playoff hump - usually someone else swoops in and wins it. Yeah be great to have someone cut their teeth and grow with the team. But very quickly because junior cycles move fast - 17 year old to 18 year sometimes in 6 or 7 months players significantly grow and they are ready for a coach that is better for that team as 18/19 year old mix. How much leash will they really have after year one? I think larger market teams tend to eat those guys very fast...not everyone is as patient as me.

That's not a bad resume, having worked in the AHL gives a guy credibility with the kids/parents/agents that is needed in today's CHL where everybody is involved and lots of politics.

Since the team is at the start of a rebuild, I guess they’ll take the time to find the the right candidate now. As much as I'd like to believe that, they've said that before, only to turn around a year or two later and do it all over again. Halifax just shouldn't have to hire this many head coaches. For a team of their stature, they should be embarrassed. This is what? The 8th head coach for Cam? Mickey mouse stuff.

Like everyone else, this does not come as a surprise. It was an odd hire at the time.
Where they go next, ideally, you would have someone who can grow with the team, especially if they go into a rebuild. 8 coaches in 10 years is crazy (I know some left for better positions; wanted to be closer to home).
One thought has Gardiner McDougall (won a Memorial Cup with Saint John as an interim coach), but he'd never leave UNB, and I doubt he would leave to coach a rebuild. A young/upcoming Dominic Ducharme type to develop the younger prospects they have coming.
Cam Russell and the owner have big decisions to make. What direction does this team go?

They don't want to bury the lead (season ticket packages available now). A gap of a few days would have been good.

What direction does this team go? so that first part about it being an odd hire at the time....well depends... When you are stuck looking for a coach at almost August the pool is pretty thin unless you poach someone under contract. Midgely somehow was available and I really don't think he was fired in 2018 - he was replaced with a coach who had Memorial Cup head coaching experience. Because they were entering a host the cup season. So in essence he was given a 2nd chance and maybe Cam felt guilty in letting him go in 2018. Probably was told to by Smith. 5th most wins as Moosehead coach and he only head coached 2 seasons. I think now they know....
