Can someone born in 1990 but before April play, for a U-18 tournament in 2008, since they are not under 18? All 1990 born players can play in the tournament in April 2008. What month doesn't matter. When the W-17's were in NEwfoundland all the scouts here were talking about how the U-18 team is an all-star team from players in this tournament. Maybe they meant for the summer tournament in August, or the U18 tournamnt a year later? Either way, it is rare for a player to play in the U17 or Canada games and then play in the U18 2-3 months later. The Q season always ends mid March, so they still have the best players available to them in April. The Memorial Cup starts when, beginng on May so its probably only 6 teams if all the leagues are in the finals that they dont have access too. That isnt a huge number, Canada could send three teams to this tournament and finish in the top 3. The 2007 U18 tournament started on April 11. At that time, the Q was only in the 2nd round of the playoffs; 8 teams were still playing. Figure it's the same for the other 2 leagues so that's 24 of the 59 CHL teams still on the ice. Because of this, Canada didn't even send a team to this tournament until 2002, and has only ever won it once, in 2003. Now the summer tournament, when Canada gets ALL their best players, is a different story. We've won this tournament 10 of the last 11 years.

HODONIN, Czech Republic (CP) - A bronze medal at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka under-18 hockey tournament is going to have to be good enough for Canada.
The Canadians beat the Czech Republic 4-1 on Thursday in their final game of the round robin. They finished second in their pool and will now face Russia in the bronze medal game on Saturday.
''The light is there at the end of the tunnel now,'' said coach Dave Barr. ''We've got one game to focus for. We don't want to come all this way, after having the players put in all this energy over the past couple weeks, and come away with nothing.''
Canada's gold-medal hopes were dashed before they even took the ice. Sweden beat Switzerland 3-2 early in the day to clinch the pool. The Swedes had beaten Canada in a shootout earlier in the week.
Barr thinks his team could easily be playing for the gold instead of bronze.
''It's a little unjust because I think we've been the better team in every single game we've played,'' he said.
Chris Doyle of Charlottetown, Kevin King of Calgary, Jordan Caron of Sayabec, Que., and Alex Pietrangelo of King City, Ont., scored goals Thursday for Canada (2-1).
Defenceman Shawn Lalonde of Orleans, Ont., had two assists and was named the team's player of the game. Peter Delmas of Bedford, N.S., picked up the win in goal.
Stepan Novotny had the lone goal for the Czech Republic (1-2).
He actually opened the scoring before the Canadians came on and soundly beat the host team.
''We never let down,'' said Lalonde. ''We kept coming and coming and coming and the Czechs had no chance.''
Canada's under-18 teams have won 10 of the last 11 summer international tournaments so playing for bronze this year is a tough pill to swallow.
They'll practise Friday and tour the area ahead of Saturday's game in Piestany, Slovakia. The Canadian players plan to give their all against Russia.
''We're going to fight like it's the gold,'' said Lalonde.

Too bad they lost, but ya cant win em all . They played hard though I'm sure. Damn shootout loss, then to lose this one with less than 8 mins. to go...I'm sure they must feel miserable. But am sure they did their best to represent Canada thats what matters in the long run....they'll get em in the next tournament. Cant wait for that one.
