I would not be surprised to hear that Riopel signs a contract with an NHL team before Xmas. He is a FA now that he has been passed over in 2 drafts ... anybody can sign him today.
I doubt it will be Montreal since they just signed Mayer ... but I'm sure there are several teams that are looking to add to their goaltending depth.
I don't expect him back as a 20.

I agree... Riopel is likely gone pro after this year
which begs the question yet again........... do you decide to take a run this year with the best goalie in the Q in net and a shitload of prospects/picks available to trade at xmas?
or do you not disrupt your chemistry and stand pat .. tinker a bit.. and likely lose in round 2 or maybe 3 then try to find a goalie for next year this summer?

Round 2 or 3 is no foregone conclusion ... no matter how you look at it, under the new playoff format, one of Moncton, Saint John, or C-B is going to be gone in the first round ... second round matchup might actually get easier ... by the third round, there are no easy matchups ... If we lose Riopel for next year, that definitely throws a wrench in things. We could always start the year with Domingue as #1, and then trade for a top goalie at Xmas if one is needed.

Do you have a link for that Mike? I believe Mayer signed with the Habs after the Q season started.
I just checked and Mayer signed on September 25th, a full two weeks after the season started.

So what you are saying is that he is only an FA in the off-seaosn. Can he not get picked up by a pro team once his Q season is done ... and then get signed before the next draft ?

Maybe he meant before the NHL season started. Guys get invited to pro camps all the time ... undrafted and unsigned ... and sometimes they sign a contract and don't come back. Or does that "invite to camp" allow an opening in the rules ?

If you're still at an NHL training camp, you have until the start of the NHL season. From the NHL CBA: 8.9 Eligibility for Play in the League. No Player shall be eligible for play in the League unless he: (a) had been claimed in the last Entry Draft, or was ineligible for claim under Section 8.4; or (b) had been eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft, but was unclaimed, and: (i) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was age 20 or older at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the next NHL Season. (ii) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such Player had signed an NHL tryout form, which was signed and registered with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).

OK ... so Riopel had until the beginning of the NHL season to be signed ... and I assume that would only include Montreal since they had given him the invite to camp.
So now ... he has to wait until after the next NHL draft (if he doesn't get drafted) before any team can sign him. Which means we won't know at the Q draft whether or not we need to find a veteran goaltender. Although Flynn might get a heads up from somebody that they plan to sign him in the off-season.

Even if he is signed he can still play in the Q.
I would believe this is what will happen. He will get drafted this year or signed by a NHL team this year. That team will consider its options and send him back with Moncton for a final season.

If by the end of the season he has proven that he is the best goaltender in the Q ... what would be the purpose of sending him back to the Q ... he is ready for the next challenge.

Doesn't a team have 2 years to sign a player after he has been drafted? If the team drafting him doesn't sign him right away, he might have limited options, and the Q could be one of them.

The AHL is already packed with good goaltenders so there is not alot of places where he could be #1. Therefore it makes sense for a developpement point of view to send him back to the Q and have him play 50 to 55 games. Instead of 20 in the AHL.
