I attended the game at the Metro Centre on Saturday night, very nice arena to watch a game, it was my first time there, left disappointed as after the 1st period the Rocket fell apart and yet again blew a great lead.
After reading this thread and things that have been thrown around one of the things they do over there is they have one child go out with the zamboni driver between the periods and "help". The kid is waving to the fans and feeling at the top of the world, and really that's all it's about. The other thing they do is, and other rinks are doing it now and so is the NHL, but they have some kids out with the starting line up with the team, which I'm sure to a 7 or 8 year old is much better then getting a prize at the end of the game. It's too bad the Rocket wouldn't try something like this for the kids. I don't care about the in between period games, etc but something like this would put a smile on a child's face for a very long time.

A letter to the editor means people have to put their REAL NAME on it and not ba able to hide under an alias like they do when they post comments to the newspaper website or on here. The regulars on here know my real ident, so I try to choose my words carefully. If you are truly upset with the way things are going ... why would anybody be afraid to sign their name ? Will Serge visit you late at night at break your legs ?

Well, at the very least, he might make you an offer you can't refuse.
If you sign that letter, make sure your horse is in a safe place.

People don't want to use their real name because then someone who actually knows them can hold them accountable for their words or their friends, neighbours or family will see their name.
Go to any blog or website that allows people to post whatever they want without any fallout from their actions and everyone thinks they're 10feet tall and bulletproof.
In a bigger centre you can write scathing letters to the editor and no one would really bat an eyelash at who you are. Write one here, someone sees it and next thing you know a friend of a friend's sister's mother's cousin twice removed is yakking about on the county gossip lines.
Simple as that.

So you are saying Islanders have no spine ... are cowardly ? Most of the Islanders I know enjoy a good scrap and aren't afraid to speak their mind.

I'm not saying Islanders are cowardly at all...your words...not mine....the ones you know probably actually put their REAL NAME on a letter and send it in and good for them for taking the time to show courage to let people see and read their opinions and possibly have it dissected in a responding letter. That's not everyone's style. Some don't want to say a word.
So I ask you..why does everyone on here and every other site for chats and discussion use an alias? I thought I could hide behind "reggiedunlop7" for obvious reasons...so I wouldn't have to defend who I was like other occassions on the old board. I still use it because...well it's Reggie Dunlop fer chrissake's.
The use of an alias is because they want to feel safe and secure that the words that they write will not come back to bite them in the ass, so that when they actually meet, to use an example ...a Benoit Gervais, they can still get a puck signed by him and not have him go "hey aren't you the John Smith who said I played like crap?"
Not many on here would look a player square in the eye and tell them one on one that they suck. It's easy to do it here, because not many know who everyone is or within the confines of a crowd behind the bench because you wouldn't really see where the comments are coming from, because lots of people are yelling.
I've told teams they were sucking, I've told players they were playing bad right there loud and clear in the arena and they knew who it was coming from each time. I walked right into a dressing room years ago and stood on the table in the dressing room and said the team was playing like shit and that they didn't deserve to win the way they were playing...they went out and won, but it took a month before the players were able to say hello to me because of that brutal honesty.

Wingman As joyous as it sounds, it's not exactly high points of my tenure at the CCC, but they have occured. 1996 - PEI Senators were sucking big time for a spell when they were in 1st place and of course fans were getting antsy. One game they were just pathetic beyond belief and I basically gave it to them for 2 periods. After the game Darcy Simon came over and told me to just be a fan and leave the negative comments to the coaches.
2000 - Charlottetown Abbies were ahving a decent season following the 1999 Fred Page Cup year thanks in part to the line of Mike Kennedy, Chris Tellum and Willie Hubloo. A game against Moncton they were showing absolutely zero effort and fans could see it. That's the game where I stood on the table and told them they were playing like shit and that fans didn't pay money to see the sad effort they were putting forth. I could tell some wanted to punch my lights out right there. Afterwards when they won I felt bad because I realized I was telling a bunch of kids they were no good and really at that stage of their career is that what a 17-18 year old wants to hear from a fan. The pro players on the Senators were different. At that stage you've seen and heard pretty much anything a fan is going to hurl at you.
Now I'm no angel and I catch myself once in awhile going a little overboard cheering on the teams, but those incidents happened when I was a little younger and more prone to the damn the torpedoes philosophy. I try my hardest to not let negative comments creep in at the game.
