Do they have the rest of the funding? As far as I know. There's just a city council vote left to approve it. The mayor says the construction should start in early 2016.

It's too bad Mayor Leblanc will have to watch the construction of his events center as a private citizen.

Do they have the rest of the funding? It is conditional on the federal government committing as well.

Do they have the rest of the funding? It is conditional on the federal government committing as well. As well as other reasonable conditions. The liberals are being very cautious with this and rightfully so. I was against provincial tax money going towards this project but with the right conditions, not so much. Will it be large enough to put a bid in for the WJC in a few years?

I think I read that they finally settled on 8,000 seats. Not sure if that would be enough to even host the non-Canadian games.. Hockey Canada seems to be gravitating the 10,000 + seats.. I could see the WJC out west in 2019 and 2021.

Irving kick in the cash already and make it bigger. Cant imagine they would let Halifax have the bigger rink!

From my understanding of talks between the cats and the city. It's been the wildcats vying for the lower number of seats so the rink does not look empty during their games.

What's the average attendance now for Wildcat games? 4-4500? They may get a higher attendance the first year, but when the novelty wears off and the higher ticket prices kick in, it may drop to lower than what the attendance is now.

Ideally in Moncton you'd want to be able to fit 8-10,000, if not it becomes hard to get the Memorial Cup and WJHC going forward. just because you average attendance is 4,000, doesn't mean you don't make the bucks when you get 7-8,000 for big playoff games.

The facility isn't just for hockey. We get bypassed by many of the larger concerts because our facility isn't suitable for concerts (low ceiling ... poor acoustics). This will add private box revenue that we have never had. What it will also do is allow the Coliseum to run trade shows just about every week of the year. My concern is the transition from having a giant free parking lot attached to the building ... to finding downtown parking and walking to the rink. Some won't adapt well. It works in SJ and Hal ... but it is a change here. It will become more difficult to go to a game than it has been. That might negatively affect attendance.

It might... but those that are so annoyed by parking and/or walking and won't go, will likely be replaced by people who are more likely to make it part of a night out now that it is so central to food and services. For many the energy of the new location will entice them to see more games. Nice modern rink, can eat/drink a few blocks away, can go out with friends after etc.. This is especially big for the younger crowd. I doubt a new arena in a prime location would see any significant overall dropoff of people, due to the parking issue. Hopefully you get more Saturday night games in the future though

My personal hope when this project gets complete is to see a change of mentality and encourage the use of public transportation to get to the centre. I would have no issue catching a bus from riverview to get to the rink. That also means I can have a few beer at the rink and not worry about driving home. Moncton has always been a driving city but with the increase of events going on with the new centre, in addition the the pending downey street project for outdoor events they should really put a push on the public transportation route. There has already been more events going on downtown compared to normal and its still only June (festival inspire/fifa fan zone/hometown hockey/125th celebration etc). There's more to come this summer with Ribfest/Canada Day/play on/Acadie Rock/Atlanticade/Atlantic Nationals/Mosiaq. The push wouldn't necessarily be on overall use of public transit but have an increase on bus times before and after events including later runs 12am/1am like they did on new years eve this past year. As far as parking as it still needs to be addressed especially for those with mobility issues if I was the owners of the heritage court building I'd be looking at building a parkade over top of their current lot if that was at all possible. You can see have the ground level for heritage court workers and build up 2-3 more levels for event parking. Its easily the biggest lot downtown and directly behind highfield square.
