do you guys think you try and compete next year or the year after? If it's next year Morand could very well be involved in a trade if we're not that strong of a team. We are already getting Morand at the draft as compensation for Miromaniv not reporting ... right chsb? 😛

We need to stay the course and not move our High Picks and Futures. Grametbauer and Welsh should be premium assets at the deadline and even if we decide Waite isn't going to cut it and decide to keep Grametbauer because we can still move him next year as a 20 year old goalie. What does everyone think of Jack Tucker... Is he showing enough to expect to develop into a top 2 D in a year or two? I'm not sold yet but he is only 17. We'll really see how he progresses in the second half.

In terms of Grametbauer, the problem with trading him at 20 is you are likely to lose half of the value if not more. I guess that's the tough part about Waite's injury, but he's been out 4 weeks, wonder if he is close? If he gets 6-7 weeks before the holidays then you have a better idea... Waite's injury is a twist that may well be forcing the team to re-consider plans for next year. In an ideal world, Waite shows enough by the 2018 trade deadline to justify moving Grametbauer as a 19 y/o #1 to a contender, Waite takes over, and leads us into 2018/19 as a 19 y/o #1. But with Grametbauer playing well, and only Tessier as a potential impact OA for 2018/19, combined with question marks on our goaltending beyond him, suddenly keeping Grametbauer to be a 20 y/o #1 looks like a decent option. Does anyone know if Waite's current injury is connected to his season ending injury from last year? Is this a chronic issue? Or just a fluke? I am not sure Waite has done enough yet to justify being handed the #1 job for next year ... but if we keep Grametbauer, we are likely looking at moving him over the summer and going with a younger backup (MacDonald perhaps) for 2018/19 - not much sense in carrying a 19 y/o backup to a 20 y/o starter who would likely play 55 games.

We also have Phillipe Gauldreault in the system who is interesting to me. Has solid numbers in Junior A in quebec as a 17YO. Seems to be taking over the #1 job from their 20 year old (2.29 .908 in 7GP). A team featuring former Wildcats Eric Leger & Charles Taillon. He could also challenge for a backup spot next season. I haven't seen enough from either MacDonald or Waite yet to feel confident in them as a #1..but Waite did have a few performances last year (particularly against HFX) that showed he could steal a game. I expect he'll be back soon.

One way or another, this midseason trading period will go a long ways towards showing the Cats colours in terms of where they are philosophically. Are they willing to sacrifice ~some~ success this year and next to build a team that could win it all in 2 years around Pelletier-Cyr-McKenna-MacDonald-Bellamy plus possibly guys like Seitz? Hudson? MacDonald? Boulianne? Gaudreault? Euro(s)? This year and next remind me of 13-14 and 14-15.

Three months ago, I would have said the thought of building a team to go for it in 2018/19 was foolish ... but suddenly our group of potential 19 y/o's for next season looks a lot better than I would have expected - McKenna and Cyr have progressed quicker (and perhaps already further) than most would have expected; Seitz is looking like an impact player ... add Pelletier, MacDonald, and an impact euro, to go along with two potential impact OAs in Grametbauer and Tessier, and some veteran depth pieces (Arsenault, Le Coultre, Aspirot, Auger, Cappanelli, etc) and we have a pretty good base to work off of ... throw in the excitement of a new building ... maybe it is not so crazy after all to expect the Cats to make a run for next year ...

I think Waite was one of our best players in the 2nd half last year, but that doesn't mean he was great ... nobody was. My concern with Waite is that he has a wonky shoulder that seems to go out from time to time. If he is the #1 then losing him for 8 weeks could be crippling and result in a terrible playoff path. Every team that wants to contend has to have solid goaltending. When that goaltending disappears, all of the plans can go right out the window. Can we rely on Waite to stay healthy ?

Maybe Waite or grametbauer get moved at Xmas and they roll with macdonald as the backup. Not sure where macdonald would go play if they sent him down. Maybe midget? He left Truro without a goalie by leaving and they've made a trade to replace him. Can't see him gettting his job back there.

Resop is the starter there, MacDonald is only the backup. If he comes they’ll move the new goalie they acquired. MacDonald has too much future value to the Bearcats to move him.

Truro won't trade the rights to a local kid like macdonald in the MHL.
That being said, Macdonald is not guaranteed a roster spot in Truro. He knew that when he chose to leave.

When he chose to leave? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he called up by the Wildcats? Yes, but he didn't have to go. I don't know him or this situation. I'm just saying, it happens routinely that a Q team calls a kid up and the kid declines to go. Once a kid realizes the Q team doesn't love him as much as he'd hoped and begins to suspect they don't have his interests at heart, it's common to decide to stay where's he's safe and has a role he enjoys with teammates he likes, rather than go for a few weeks for a limited role knowing he'll be discarded soon after and may lose his junior A job in the meantime.
