Cant believe we get to go back to that beautiful facility again today.
Hoping that having the Moose fan busses up get the crowd a little more into it. Looks like another big crowd..I'm guessing around 6000.

Looks like another big crowd..I'm guessing around 6000. I feel like what you saw Friday is what you are going to get in terms of crowd atmosphere. I realize that probably half that crowd likely wanted the novelty of being at the first sporting event at the centre and couldn’t name three players on the cats but the hardcores were in there too! I can tell you I gave it 100% in terms of my usual screaming/ cheering/ heckling ref/goalies etc, but there is no way the players or referees are hearing me ( they would have in the coliseum, I am a bit farther away from the ice). Unfortunately I feel like a tiny spec in that building. Loud fans/ noisy season ticket holders just don’t have the same prescence in the new rink even if they try and and are spread out way more. When I look across the rink it looks miles away compared to the coliseum. I thought at least for goals the fan noise would have been awesome/ out of your seat type atmosphere but even when they scored, I’ve heard more noise from 3500 at coliseum.

The pitch of the seats is steeper than the coliseum. Technically everyone is closer to the ice not farther. Other than the high seats that didn't exist at the coliseum. The high ceilings likely give an optical illusion that you are farther. Try and imagine what the coliseum would look like with the ceiling over double the height. Might also generate less noise as well with the open air. I found it funny (and expected) to look around 115 as a large amount of fans stood for goals and then look across the ice at the club seats and saw maybe 1 or 2 people standing. I thought it was pretty loud for the first goal. Watching the replay back it comes across that way as well.

I spoke to a front office guy at the open house about designating the upper part of one of the sections behind the away net for the less passive fans, like they have in any arena outside Canada/US (although now even NCAA teams and places like Laval and Nashville are doing this). The front office guy's response was and I quote: " we don't have that culture here", as though he was picturing soccer hooligans or something LOL. Basically the idea was to have the same kind of setup as a playoff road game in Saint John or something, maybe 50-100 louder fans all within earshot of each other... let's face it we find being surrounded by quiet fans really annoying and probably vice versa, so why not fix the problem. Shouldn't be a big deal when 90% of end/corner seats will be empty most nights.

I vaguely recall they may have tried something like that one year with one of the corner sections of the Coliseum, it never caught on ...

Having a new arena sure feels great Miss the nostalgia of the Coliseum however the advantages at Avenir outweigh the nostalgia I felt 5800 fans was manageable last night Not as crowded and we actually got to look around a bit Im having a hard time swallowing the cost of goods at the vendors although I am still purchasing food and drinks This is the new era I suppose

It will be interesting to see if prices stay the same heading into next season. Lots of alcohol was being sold Friday night, but far less on sunday. $10 beers are certainly harder to justify on a sunday afternoon or Tuesday evening. Looking at the Leons centre in Kingston which is a comparable venue also run by SMG their pricing is about the same, and actually more expensive for some items. The biggest positive I see coming out of the weekend was that security was mostly a non issue, I heard very little complaint aside from a few people surprised they couldn't bring coffee in. Parking was also a non issue, neither was traffic after the game. In fact in terms of getting to my car and getting home it was faster than a game at the coliseum for me . Dispersal parking at its finest. I thought the atmosphere was pretty good for a sunday afternoon game. The new in crowd promo guy (the magic pa guy) does a pretty good job, don't know why there is still 2 in crowd guys at this point. The building temperature issues seem to be fixed. Having a short pre game helped as well. Although they have some timing issues to be worked out..the Moose were lined up for the anthem and the cats hadn't even started announcing the starting lineups. The new DJ is better, and having that sound system to work with helps. In terms of improvements theres 2 things I'd like to see added. In the concessions areas they should be using the screens to show the game, they also need a few clocks added both in the concessions areas and on the interior so you know how much time is left in the intermission.

What was with the lower bowl at the end of the rink?

What was with the lower bowl at the end of the rink? It's supposed to be setup for the Ice Level Bar like at Harbour Station but for some reason wasn't setup. I'm not sure if that's because there was another event at the Avenir Centre the night before and they didn't have time to, or if they didn't plan on doing it on a Sunday to begin with. If that's the case they should just use the retractables since they are at the end the cats shoot twice. We'll see if its there on Tuesday.

I suspect they view Sunday games as more of a family day and with lots of kids in the rink there is no real need to have an ice level bar. It is better suited for Thursday-Saturday evening games.

Did they have it set up on Friday? No because the game was sold out so they used the retractables.
