I'm happy with the draft. Considering the circumstances I'm sure it's been a difficult year to make picks. I'm fine with us a chance on a young guy. He's only 16 so lots of room to grow and we had success with his brother. Picking 50th was going to be difficult to land a name we have heard of, so of course we are relying on Stats only. He might not be high end but maybe he develops with ice time. And a goalie that can come over for a year and hopefully keep us in games. We should have a higher pick next year so picking a 19 Year old makes sense. We had success with his brother because he was one of the top rated players in the draft that year and we took him first overall.

What are you basing this on? Almost impossible to tell at this point from just looking at an eliteprospects page. Not making the u17 team is 1 sign. Not being a top scorer on his club team is another.

Saginaw Mintyukov, Pavel 57. Ottawa Gaidamak, Vsevolod I get how the draft works and that deals are made prior. I'm not saying its a huge reach but it's a it discouraging to not get a quality euro like the 2 taken shortly after in the draft.

I think without knowing who would report and not having seen many of these players play it's pretty challenging to know what's a reach or not with such a late pick.

Not being a top scorer on his club team is another. If I had a shovel, I’d tell you to keep digging. He’s a power forward with skill and a high complete level. I remember a conversation I had with Ivan when he was a Wildcat. He said his brother was a better player than him. Max wants to be a pro like his brother. Moncton is a good fit. He’s familiar with the organization.

Any scouting reports on Usnik? Any indications he can come here and be a workhorse and play 55-60 games like Will. It looks like he has played some games internationally so I'm sure he's faced plenty of shots.

How old was the kid at the time? 10 years old? is that where you used your shovel to dig? really? lol Max may want to be a a pro like his brother but he is fighting a tremendous uphill battle. Ivan was a top talent when he came over. He was arguably the best 1995 born russian when he came over.

I am willing to give Barbashev a chance before we write him off ... he was top 5 in scoring on a strong team that won its 'Conference Championship' in the Russian 17U league ... if he plays a two way game like his brother, he could turn out to be a nice piece ...

Picking 50th I don't know if we can ask for much more than an upside pick. I'd much rather them make a pick like this than a throw away like Chaika, Glassl, Dyk. Yes, he's a project but he's still young and from all accounts wants to be here. If it pans out we have him for 3 years developing with the rest of the core young guys. If not, you can move on and pick someone else as we get further into the rebuild.

My main point is I just don't see the point in using words like "discouraging" or "a reach" when we know next to nothing about the player and the pick was so late in the draft. Its completely unknown whether players selected after him would have reported here. Its possible he comes here and has little impact, but there should be a very high pick coming the following year, with the 2nd pick being only a few picks after where we took Barbashev this year. If Barbashev plays in the top 6 in the next couple seasons I'd call it a success. If Usnik can in fact come over and be a starter it means they don't need to use a 20 slot on Lund-Cornish necessarily. Both picks are actually quite intriguiging with the families ties and the first euro goalie we've seen since Roman Will. I'm still finding it abit odd to mentally process these euro's coming over while the pandemic is still very much out there.

In terms of Euros, the proof will be in the pudding, drafting where they were it's harder to get an impact guy, as long as Barbashev can play in the top 3 lines and has upside, I'll be ok with that. In terms of the goalie, by taking a 19 year old, you would hope he is at least as good as Cornish so you can dress 3 OA skaters, two being forwards. Let the 3-4 young goalies compete for the #2 spot.
