So Daoust is the only chip we have left. I wonder if we can get value back for him or do we hang on to him

I know he’s likely to be a 2 year guy but I think that’s a steep price to pay for him... I like him as a player but I don’t know if I like him enough to pay that price. Although teams trying to go for it/set up for next year, may.

How many NHL drafted 19 year olds get traded for less than a 1st round pick? Daoust would be a great 2 way #2 center on any contender, he can play in all situations and take tough matchups. He is similar style to Groulx last year but obviously not at the same level.

I like Daoust, and I think he could be a good 2nd line player on a contender, but I don't see the Groulx comparison. Groulx played a heavy game - he had a man's body. Daoust is much more slight, relies more on skating and smarts. Groulx brought a power element that Daoust doesn't have. Groulx was also a 60% faceoff guy, one of the best in the league - Daoust was just under 45 last year and has only improved to 47 this year. Groulx was a guy you put out to shut down the other team's top player - not sure Daoust is that guy.

Pare got a late 1, but that was before the season started that year. He's the closest comparable i can think of.

I'd take an early to mid-round 2nd plus another pick ... or a young player that was drafted in Rd 2 in the last draft and has a good rating. We paid nothing for him so anything we get is bonus, but he has value in the lineup also.

I've only been following the wildcats since I moved here in 2009 and have noticed that Moncton has only really developed a couple of players from qmjhl draft to NHL draft and that was in the last 2 years. I'm not trying to be negative but can someone honestly tell me the last high pick goalie that moncton actually developed to full potential ?
It looks good on paper what we got for Spence, but from what I have seen , Moncton does not have the patience to develop a goalie ! Thoughts ?

If you draft a guy 5th overall but he is a bust and you can get a 2nd rounder instead of nothing, you take it. 1st is arbitrary...obviously if you get value that surpasses a 1st, you take it. With him being 19 you can have conditions on him playing as an OA. Plus the likely Covid conditions. Ideally the deal is like this...BBA example... Schmitt(2004 2nd rounder) for Daoust(2001) If the season is played out Cats get a 3rd in 2021 or 2022. If Daoust plays in 21-22 the Cats get a 2nd rounder in 2022 or 2023. The risk is minimizes for both sides.

I honestly don’t think Wildcats move Daoust unless Ritchie gets 2 significant picks, example a 1st and 2nd.
I expect to see Cats make a couple more moves, adding another F and D.

The risk you have to weigh is, if he has a so so 2nd half you may only get a 3rd as an OA(or you keep him all next year).

Well I don’t think he should be NHL drafted either but I think he’s a 3rd line guy on a contender right now. I think he could play top 6 but I’m not sending him out there every night playing there if I’m a contender.

You should go back and look at what the price was for Fortier. There were no 1st rounders involved with that trade.

The price for Fortier is at least a 1st rounder if he stays in the Q(and not AHL). Daoust does not require an OA spot, won't go to AHL(this year) and is possibly back at 20.
