With the pieces we need, he was playing 4th line either way. I assume you're referring to Carruthers and this is possibly a response to my most recent comment. 4th line or not, if we actually played 4 lines then he would have seen a huge increase in his ice time. We spent most of last season dressing only 11 forwards which meant we only played 3 lines with a couple of spares (Carruthers and someone else) who would only get a shift or 2 a period. We had the forward depth to roll 4 decent lines but squandered it.

With the pieces we need, he was playing 4th line either way. That’s the good little koolaid drinking way of looking at it. TG couldn’t see that coming when he picked him? Can’t draft someone third overall and not be willing to invest in the kid with meaningful playing time. Now TG trades him for terrible value? If the best TG could do with a #3 overall choice was pick someone he’ll barely play and project them as a fourth liner, he never should have made the pick. Had he traded that pick instead of choosing Carruthers, he gets a huge haul at the draft last year. Shit he would have been better off selecting a goalie like Filion and letting him develop. At worst that at least would have given us an 18 year old goalie with high potential when we start the rebuild. There’s not enough Kool Aid in the world to make me think anything about this, from draft to trade, was handled properly. Great use of #3 overall.

Are you really trying to sell nobody would have wanted to acquire a third overall draft choice? Shit man #8 in that draft was traded for pick #13 and #23 and a third round pick. That was for pick number eight. Better than what we got for number three. Also smart teams, when they pick #3, invest in the kid. They play the kid most every game. They give key ice time on a meaningful line. They give PP and PK time. They put the kid out there with the game on the line. They let the kid learn, and improve. They don’t scratch the kid a lot. They don’t stick the kid on fourth line when he does play. They don’t hope the kid magically improves on his own. That’s not what other teams do…but it has become what we do. Draft high end kids and give them little chance of success. Draft high end kids without a coach that has even played their position.

Does anyone else feel like Georgie was hesitant to go all in and is keeping the idea of selling at Christmas if this team underperforms? I still don't feel confident with the D core going into the season. And looking at this team and how they've played last season and before. Nothing here screams powerhouse or #1 contender. What do you guys think the chances are that we see some guys from the 2018 draft class get sold off this season?

Looking at the team we have at the moment, we should be better than last year but to go all the way we need more. If we add two good Euros and one or two more good players we definitely could be good enough to contend. My worry is more about Will then skill though. I don't think the core group is willing to do what it needs to do to win. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

Whether one thinks the lineup is good enough to be a top contender or not, I think it's pretty clear what the intent is here. Clearly that is to go for it this season. You don't make moves to add Dufour and Lemieux, on top of moves adding Francis and Inniss in the past year or so, unless the game plan is to go for it.
I think the lineup is fine. The problem remains behind the bench in my opinion and that's unlikely to change.

Import draft goes tomorrow. I haven't seen anything suggesting otherwise, so I expect us to make 2 picks.
In a perfect world we get a LD like Becar and someone who can play top 6 (or a trade for someone like a Peeters)

If we could get us a David Stich type defenseman I'd consider it a success regardless of what becomes of the second pick. We can probably acquire a top 6 forward outside the import draft, if needed.

Yes! And I’d like to think the chances of picking up a Euro D like Stich should be good. That would be a most welcome addition.
