Congratulations to Noah Dobson on his new contract - $4M USD/yr for 3 years. Well deserved. He probably could have gotten more AAV by signing for 7-8 years, but this way he sets himself up for a big payday in 2025.

Congratulations to Dobson but a terrible decision by the Islanders, the kids going to get paid a hell of a lot more in 3 years. You could have given him 8 years 6.5-7.5 per year probably, maybe you touch up on 8 per year. With his trajectory, the cap expected to rise and the comparable defenceman contracts only going up, the Islanders will have to pay through the nose to retain his services. After the contract ends, if he wants to take a 1 year deal and walk himself to UFA status, that option exists also.

I think from the NY side, they are in a cap crunch now, with a veteran team, in 3 years, they will have a lot of those guys gone plus the cap will likely be up 8-10M. It also allows them to luck him up until he is 33 with an 8 year deal, covering his whole prime. He is also just coming into his own, this allows him to keep growing without the pressure of an 8M/year AAV.

Yeah but thing is he may not want to stay in New York, you’re walking a guy to the point where he can taste being a UFA and he can make it a reality by taking a qualifying offer or a 1 year deal. If we project it out, you’re potentially walking a 25/26 YO RHS 1st pairing D, who’d be amongst the best players at his position to free agency. That’s got blank cheque written all over it and Dobson may decide he wants that.

Seen so many people hating on the Dobson contract online saying it was an overpay....clearly they haven't watched him play and how he's going to continue to get better. I think he's in for a bigger payday when this contract ends and will likely command 7-8M AAV for sure.
If the Islanders aren't a playoff team for the next 3 years as well I can see Dobson considering going elsewhere.

At least you have control and can trade the asset if things don't work out. The team is gambling that they will be in a good spot in terms of on ice success plus playing in a new rink in a good hockey market will keep him there.

Patrice Bergeron got his 1,000th career point with a second-period assist and the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 Monday night for their seventh straight win.
Bergeron became the fourth Boston player and 94th in NHL history to reach the milestone with the second assist on Brad Marchand’s goal at 15:08 that gave the Bruins a 4-1 lead.
Marchand immediately pointed at Bergeron after scoring his goal and the Boston bench emptied to celebrate with the 37-year-old center along the boards.
The other Boston players to reach 1,000 points are Ray Bourque (1,506), Johnny Bucyk (1,339) and Phil Esposito (1,012), who was at the game as a Lightning radio broadcaster. Bergeron is the 41st player to have 1,000 points with one franchise.

With 7 goals in 24 GP, Noah Dobson is currently in 3rd place amongst NHL defencemen in goals scored. Erik Karlsson has 11 and Rasmus Dahlin has 8.

It's good to see Rodrigo Abols doing so well with Latvia.

Something cool I noticed, former Acadie-Bathurst Titan (and Sea Dog / Gatineau Olympic) Dawson Theede has made the Halifax Thunderbirds roster this year. I remember he was always a dual-sport athlete and one of the things I always heard about him was he was an even better Lacrosse player than he was a hockey player. Well, I guess him making an NLL roster is evidence of that! www.halifaxthunderbirds.com/players/detail/theede

Theede was awesome in his time with the Titan, was super exciting to watch as he was an offensive threat but also could drop the gloves and throw the body, was a shame he was an OA in their all-in year.

He’d play hockey at SMU until that season ended and then go play lacrosse in the NLL. He’s put up some pretty solid numbers in the NLL too.
