That is a subjective award suggesting that for one year he was voted the best coach. The issue that I take with it (and with the notion that Hulton is the best coach) is that it conflates Hulton the coach and Hulton the GM. Hulton the coach had a lineup that was on paper close to SJ's (and he definitely outcoached Dwyer). I'm not saying that he isn't a top end coach, just that I don't think he is THE best. I would suggest that Hulton might have been the GM of the year last year. Julien was the best coach IMO because Sherbrooke's team was only predicted to be a 6-8 seed (behind Quebec, SJ, Charlottetown, Bathurst, and Shawinigan plus the extra seed drop from the winner of the gastly West division) and they finished 4th (and were 3rd up until SJ's huge push at the end).

When Julien wins the Brian Kilrea Award, then you can say, definitively, that he is the best coach in the CHL. Until then, it is only your opinion....nothing more....nothing less. And we all know what opinions are compared to..... For now, that honour belongs to Jim Hulton, not Stephane Julien.

Hulton the GM does a good job with considering he's running a smaller market team.
He's got one of the more interesting trade histories too...

I mean saying Julien is the best coach is no less subjective then the award. You can agree or disagree with whether he is the best coach, I won’t even pretend to guess who is but there’s so many different ways to measure it. Are you looking at pure team success (when every team isn’t dealing with the same deck of cards), are you looking at the development of players into pro/NHLers (it is a development league after all), etc, etc. There’s way too many ways in the CHL to quantify the “best” coach, I don’t know who it is but I think Hulton is one of the best and you won’t hear any argument out of me from a person who says he is.

My metric for Hulton for being the best coach is he always seems to find a way to get the best out of the players he has.
A lot of Islanders who have had great seasons have not been high draft picks, nor highly-touted prospects.
Keith Getson, Cedric Desruisseaux and Thomas Casey, William Trudeau, P-O Joseph, Pat Guay to a degree, the list goes on Hunter Drew
A lot of these guys were not seen as star players in the Q. So many were relative nobodies who he managed to identify and get the absolute best out of... and that seems to be pretty consistent.
There's a lot of guys who at 15 and 16 weren't anywhere near NHL radars that ended up being very good Q players and getting looks by NHL franchises.

There's a lot of guys who at 15 and 16 weren't anywhere near NHL radars that ended up being very good Q players and getting looks by NHL franchises. That's exactly it. Players WANT to come here to play...just because of Hulton. There are 3 Ontario FA that are listed on their roster this season.......and they got Mossey signed.....just as he got Captain Budgell signed....along with others. As I mentioned earlier, is it just a coincidence that after Hulton signed his new 3yr contract, they got Mossey signed? He took a JrB dman.....and turned him into an NHL drafted player. Is JH a great coach. Yes. Is he the best in the CHL? Everyone has their own opinion. As you mentioned, he gets the absolute best out of each and every player. He made Charlottetown a place where kids want to come. A place where kids want to be drafted to. That's all because of Hulton. No matter what the skill level is on his team.......playing a Hulton coached team is never an easy task.
