The "kid" is 20 years old, old enough to work full time or own a house...old enough to know better. While I’ll agree he’s no longer a kid by the definition, these are still kids.. kids old enough to know better in a lot of situations but think back to when you were 20 years old, you probably didn’t make the right decision or the smart decision all the time. I know I didn’t. Now it doesn’t excuse the actions of the player but I think we all get caught up in critiquing a player… it’s one thing if it’s about their play but I try to stay away from personal attacks on a players character because ultimately, the majority of posters here are a lot older and should be more mature/wiser. Take the higher road, it’s easy to criticize the players when you’re on a message board behind a screen name, I think a lot of people wouldn’t have the guts to make the same remarks when face to face with them. Respectfully (and I stress that, I really enjoy your posts), I disagree with this. Kids aren't growing up the way we did. I think this is something that is being taught from a young age now, and at this point I don't believe there is any way a 20 year old would not know the weight of their words. Ignorance is a pretty shoddy defence anyway. To be clear, I don't think he should be booted out of the league or anything crazy like that. I'm all for educating him and giving him a chance to learn from it and be better. But I also don't think it's wrong for him to be criticized for it. I think it is more important things like this are called out than it is bad hockey plays are called out. He is free to learn and improve and make amends. But that doesn't mean he is free from the consequences of his actions, and that includes it being discussed and condemned. And on your last line, that's just ridiculous. It's a nonsense argument. I don't speak for anyone else, but I know if I heard someone using discriminatory language I would call them out regardless of age, gender, anything. Sadly, I have already had to do so twice this week. Why would anyone not to Brady Burns?

I don't think as many posts would have happened if we didn't have another poster come on here trying to downplay what the player did as not a big deal, and saying "everything is offensive". Actually no, not everything is offensive. Sitting near players benches you hear trash talk all the time, but throwing hateful slurs around is quite clearly offensive and irresponsible. The Sea Dogs have had Brock Mcgillis work with their team, a guy whos whole story revolves around what being called slurs on the ice did to his mental health as a player who was not out.. They've hosted a pride night THIS season. The idea that a player would be ignorant to a hate slur is ridiculous to me. I'm glad the league doesn't mess around with these suspensions. Imagine there is a closeted player on Cape Breton who has to hear that slur thrown around. We can't run around saying we care so much about players mental health and that hockey is for everyone without also having zero tolerance for shit like this. Some people are quick to come and defend the offender in these situations when we should be thinking a lot more about the victim, and that might not even be the person he said it directly to who takes it the worst.

It’s being taught from a young age now but I know people around his age, it wasn’t as accepted and taught to the extent it is now when these kids were in school. Now it’s common practice from the ages of 5 and up (or earlier) but that’s a fairly recent development. That doesn’t excuse it but I’m not so sure that education and understanding has come as far as people want to believe when it comes to the weight of words. At any rate, what the player said was in appropriate based on the suspension and comments of the team (I don’t know what was said, I wasn’t present but I can take a guess) and the player should serve his suspension and whatever else comes from the team in relation to it. You committed the act, you get the consequences of it. I really commend you for the calling out of people but I can tell you, that really isn’t common practice. Most people in society turn a blind eye to those comments because it’s an uncomfortable situation to place yourself in. People don’t like that feeling of being uncomfortable, especially around a stranger. I was simply stating that I don’t think most people who come here and criticize a players character for a situation that could very well have been a mistake that he learns from, would be willing to do it when face to face with the player or any person making those comments.

Yes, I understand your point, and with many people you are right. I don't really see it's relevance though. Calling it out in any forum means something, not just in person. I truly believe most posters on this forum don't have a malicious bone in their body (including yourself), and I don't want to make a big deal about it. But it just really riles me up. A point to consider - maybe we would be in a better place if we jumped straight to commending those who speak out about it, rather than criticizing them for doing so online. I understand why people wouldn't want to speak up in person. Conflict sucks. But bigotry has to be confronted. For the record - this forum has really made me feel better about the wider hockey community with all of the terrible stuff that has been surrounding our game lately. In my youth playing the game or watching in the stands, there wasn't much space for people who spoke up. You were othered pretty quickly if you did. But I can see there are a lot of good people on this board who see the issues in our game, and sports in general, and are willing to discuss it without fear. It's a good community on here. Edit - I'm happy to leave it here by the way. I really didn't mean to hijack this trade thread. If only the Sea Dogs would do something haha.

I am not sure on the status of Hurtunise re: injuries, but if he is traded is there a chance Patenaude rejoins for the last half? He was loaned to HC Ambri-Piotta (who in turn loaned him to HCB Ticino Rockets) until Dec 31.
I think it might help Brideau's development if he plays U18 or Junior A for the last half of the season.

This might be the dumbest post ever but right now it doesn't look like we can get market value for MacDonald or Reynolds so let's use whatever picks we have and futures and get Melenson and Kidney from Bathurst try and finish at least 6th to avoid Quebec and Halifax in the first round and then hope Hurbertise stands on his head in the 2nd round thoughts on how stupid this is

If we traded every pick we own plus every player 18 or less, Bathurst still likely says no. Worst case scenario, we keep everyone.

I wonder if anyone is asking about Charlie Desroches yes he is 20 but played top 4 minutes on a mem cup winner type of defenseman you look at the game sheet and don't even remember him playing.

I like Desroches, problem is that most contenders have their 20’s and even if they didn’t there’s 13 teams who could move their 20’s and only 5 looking to buy. I doubt may teams are looking to add him at this point, you almost either have to move them at the draft or have a guy so elite that multiple teams come knocking.

Not surprised that the Seadogs have yet to move any of their vets but it's really quiet on the rumor front. Has TG mis-read the market or are the trades locked in? Gonna be a terribly long rebuild if the assets aren't dealt? Cupboards have never been this bare.

Hearing Macdonald to Moncton. Just a rumour but heard it from a few people in the know mentioned it not long ago. He will be back as a 20 so might make sense. Reynolds will be back as a 20 as well but he’s not a valuable as Macdonald. Not sure he will be moved.

Heard recently some whispers that Reynolds has asked not to be traded, and I would assume he as a no-trade clause since he was an “NCAA guy” when drafted.
