As we've seen from the leagues 2 finalists Halifax and Quebec you build your team through the draft. And you wait until you know you are only 1 or 2 pieces away to make major moves as Halifax (Lawrence/Doucet) and Quebec (Robidas/Langlois) did. The Wildcat Way building the whole roster via Trades when you aren't ready to compete is not sustainable as we've witnessed while watching the other Maritime teams win Memorial Cups. Imagine our 3 1sts turn into a player like Dumais, Vidicek and McKinnon Quebec built as much through trades as they did good drafting. Bolduc, Rochette, Roy all added via trade even before this season. Halifax was an extreme outlier in the amount of trades they made. But Quebec went after big name talent to try and build a 2 year team and did a great job in doing so. But they added 3-4 pieces before they added the last few. There's 17 other teams saying "what if we picked a Dumais".

You'd have to compare it to past teams to actually say whether it is or is not a lot. I think it ends up being more of an outlier especially going back 3-4 years. You also just can't throw a Whynot and a Lawrence in the same bucket as 1 was acquired before his 16yr old season and the other while he was 20. Quebec acquired mostly established star players to try and win over 2 years. Halifax acquired 2 of those 4 trade guys when they were still young and 2 when they were 20. Whynot has never played for anyone else. Saint John made as many trades with CB to build their Memorial Cup team as Halifax did with the entire QMJHL to build their finalist that will return a solid core.

And no one is saying that that was a good thing I'm just suggesting that trading for players isn't necessarily a bad thing and that there isn't a single approach to winning (aside from not making trades every year to shuffle pieces around blindly). Moncton is soon going to have to make trades because they don't necessarily have roster spots for all of their picks, but that is a question of who to keep.

Then a few of their guys (Rousseau and Huchette) were NCAA leans that they convinced to report. I think Halifax definitely built through the draft, but Quebec wasn’t really since a lot of their impact players were acquired by trades. I would like for Moncton to use their first round picks, but I have no issue with using one to trade for an 18 year old. If they use the pick on a 19 year old this year, I would be disappointed though because it just doesn’t line up with their go for it year. I just want Moncton to have a plan instead of making moves for short term gain. If they have a plan, go for it.

Desnoyers by all accounts looks great and should be fine but the other 2 PTBNL are they going to be game changers at 17? The comparison of Dumais is a huge hope. He was the 18th pick and no one really expected him to be a 100 point guy at 17. I wouldn’t even expect that from Desnoyers as a 17yo. You guys are in a tight spot where maybe trading one of those picks now for an 18yo might make more sense. In this case maybe look at Bolduc and how he became a Rampart. You use the picks , draft and develop the players, having good young talent is never a bad thing, they either help you win at 17 or are big assets you can trade for veteran players. I wouldn't trade any of the picks until I know I'm hosting. After SJ just got it , I would expect it to go to a Quebec team in 2 years.

I know the old pattern was maritime, Quebec, Maritime, Quebec but what Quebec team seems to be looking for it? IMO the only team that lines up for it is Moncton. After I wrote that last sentence I had to go look at the teams and see who might lineup. Team that could compete that year is BC but I don’t ever think they will host. The only other team that might be interested could be Rimouski. I think Moncton would win a bid over them though. The part about drafting I don’t disagree with your take at all. All I’m saying is if you’re looking at the two directions each team took Quebec traded for Bolduc the year before and it worked out for them. Here’s the question though who is this season’s Bolduc? Gauthier from Sherbrooke who is already “rumoured 😉😉” to be going to Drummondville? If it was for him what would you say? Also I’m only talking the later picks not the 1st overall. That you will use on Desnoyers and he should be a contributor for your 2024/25 season. Then at the 2025 draft he comes to Halifax as a future for the MacKinnon and Cataford trade you make that year.

I’d put Moncton ahead of those 2 in a bid for the Cup. The teams are all comparable but the new arena is just the thing that would always tip the scales in Moncton’s favour.

I would love Moncton to get the Cup in 2025 but we all know how the Quebec league works and would they really want the 2019, 2022 and 2025 all going to the Maritimes.

While their cycles line up nicely, the fact that they were the 2009 and 2012 Memorial Cup hosts (in their current arenas) would have to be a negative. The best teams that could bid in terms of on-ice product would be Rouyn, Drummondville, Chicoutimi, and BLB IMO. Rouyn is probably too small and too remote to be a viable candidate, but each of the other 3 could reasonably bid.
