Last game I was at, the Budweiser Designated Driver booth wasn't open.. coincidence? Been open the last few games? Even better news. The designated driver program is ending as of Mar 16. sus

This is such a shitty and frustrating situation.
For the reasons everyone has already stated, this is a selfish and reckless act.
I'm also conflicted. 5 games seems lenient, I agree. Obviously the Mooseheads fan in me wants Jordan Dumais to play in the playoffs, but morally it just feels like a really light punishment for something that could have seriously hurt someone or worse.
The culture around Junior hockey, and hockey and general sucks tho. Dumais aside, for the Mooseheads how does this happen? This is a 19 year old from another province here under your care and he's driving under the influence? You'd think you'd be able to keep a bit better tabs on it than that.
And this is just pure speculation - but how does this happen in an environment where this is treated seriously, like it's a big deal? How often does this actually happen? Is this a one-off incident or was Dumais just careless enough to get caught doing something that happens routinely?
This is to say, as much as it would suck as a fan - maybe it's time the CHL started holding teams accountable as well, not just the individual players.
Just a shitty situation all around... I'm glad nobody ended up hurt, but it doesn't make it any less irresponsible.

Heck when was 18, I moved to Halifax from Antigonish, and I quickly learned where a drink special was happening on a particular night. Tuesday was usually the slow night. My only concern was how I was going to use my brother’s ID at the Gorsebrook when he was working there. So I don’t fault the Moose that he was out at a bar. He is entitled to that. The moose could educate the kids on driving and drinking (and maybe they do), or they can arm them with a taxi service. This might sound crazy, but a lot of organizations do this (sports or regular business). But I do blame them on the silence since Mar 1st, which smells like a cover up…and then a measly 5 game suspension that ends for game 2 of playoffs.

Is he even healthy enough to play? Or are the five games he is suspended for ones he would have missed anyway while recovering from surgery?

I think people need to remember that this suspension isn't his punishment. He's going to court for it just like everyone else who's ever done this. The suspension is an additional sanction from his employer on top of whatever legal consequences he faces. Losing your job or having your entire career destroyed for a dui sometimes happens, but it is certainly not the norm. Most people don't receive a second punishment from their employer, if their employer even finds out about it at all. That is a good point.

I don’t see a cover up, they wait until he was healthy and then put the suspension in place. I think these players are allowed to make personal mistakes outside of hockey and be able to maintain at least something that resembles a small semblance of privacy. It’s not in the team’s interest or Dumais for the Moose to drag it on stage for a public execution. They did exactly what I would consider standard practice… Dumais is being punished for an off ice incident and that’s all that we’re going to say. And that’s all that they should say, leave the speeches for behind closed doors when they’re addressing their new team next year and the importance of off ice responsibilities.

The players are not restricted to there households they have a life outside of hockey 3 players missed curfew this night it just happened that Dumais was caught once the players were out of his car... the other players were disciplined internally no suspension needed

As much as I want Dumais back for Playoffs, this is awful. Years of mothers against drunk driving and all the campaigns at Scotiabank Centre against drunk driving and then this "penalty"... We all know it's because the team wants him back for playoffs. What the actual hell? Dumais knowingly entered a vehicle as a driver while intoxicated. As a star player and role model to a lot of kids he should have the mental capacity to figure that this is NOT a good decision. We all make mistakes yes, but driving drunk could have killed people. I'm glad it didn't. I am pretty negative, I know, but I have heard enough awful stories from friends and family that were impacted by drunk drivers. JUST DON'T DO IT. The whole reason DUI is even a thing is because alcohol impairs your judgment. So saying that he needs to make better decisions and knew better etc etc applies to SOBER Jordan Dumais. Not the drunk version whose decision making is compromised. Liquor is new to the kids this age and you’re gonna see them make stupid decisions. It happens a lot but you don’t hear about it because they’re not a public figure. Kids are gonna screw up. He’s not the first and won’t be the last. Let him wear the consequences through the court system, same as any other teenager would and let those consequences spill into his “job” same as you or I. The big fuck up here in my opinion is the Mooseheads. 1- the 5 games seems light and looks tailored to the playoffs. Similar infractions in the OHL and WHL have fallen into the 10-12 game range. 2- the Mooseheads knew about the incident on March 1st. But did nothing publicly for two weeks. Had they suspended Dumas indefinitely pending an investigation, they could’ve given him the same 10-12 game suspension and still not affected the playoffs. Much better look. The way it’s perceived now is the team tried for two weeks to get the crown the squash the charges. 3- 99% of kids who become drinking age are going to experiment and test their limits when it comes to alcohol. The Mooseheads players hit those ages during their tenure and the team needs to be more proactive here to ensure player and public safety. There have been 3 public incidents in my recent memory but anybody who follows or is connected to junior hockey knows there’s a whole lot more incidents we never hear about. Property damage in hotels, damage to billet homes, drunk driving where nobody gets caught or perhaps a cop who’s a fan of the team escorts the player home (this has happened at least twice to my knowledge, once in 1999 and once in 2008). Like I said above, once the drinking starts, the players judgement no longer can be trusted. However if the Mooseheads had a program where the players can be up front of their plans, have team paid transportation arranged in advance so these situations are avoided seems like an easy step. This is super easy to do now with apps and ride shares. A bigger budget team like Halifax really has no excuse for implementing something like this. You can't suspend somebody that is still injured he was not active on March 1st yesterdays game was the first game that he was activated.

So if he fired off a gun in downtown Halifax, you are ok with 5 games? He got behind the wheel way over the limit, which is basically a loaded weapon. He is lucky he didn’t hit or kill anyone. Sure he is allowed to make mistakes, but when your organization collects tax payer dollars and tries to play itself off as a community builder, you are held to a higher standard. So the acts of your employees reflect on the organization. I am also not saying the Moose tried to cover it up, but the silence for 2 weeks until it got too loud is not a good look. The rumors were all over the internet. I also and bumfuzzled that the herald didn’t break this story. Even after the Moose had their release, it was Global News who had the dui release. With the hockey culture issues, it just smells bad for the organization and the Herald who are supposed to be independent reporters. In the end, it’s a business so getting him back in game 2 of playoffs is good for business. The kid made a mistake, thankfully no one was hurt. His reputation won’t be hurt in the long run, and if he can get a lesser charge his visa won’t be impacted. It just wasn’t a good 2 weeks of silence from the Moose.

My point isn’t the 5 games… it’s arbitrary really, what’s the right number? I’m not sure. It’s like with any dangerous action, look at the worst case and nothing seems enough. By all accounts it lines up with similar infractions previously in other organizations and I’m sure the Moose were in communication with the league. My point is the delay and “cover up”… the Moose were never going to organize a public stoning nor should they. They handed out the historically appropriate punishment when they could. The injury didn’t exactly make it straightforward.

Is it possible that the Mooseheads actually followed league protocol in this situation? Would there not be steps in place where the organization would be told not to discuss the matter or release any details to the media under any circumstances until all parties could meet - legal teams - the league - Columbus - Dumais - and is this why the Simons were in town? A common statement being made is "lucky nobody got hurt" - but they did. Jordan Dumais just got hurt - for the rest of his life. I hope the Mooseheads can rally and make the most out of it - but the reality is likely going to be acceptance in losing in an early playoff round because the wheels fell off. I hope I'm wrong. Yes, the league has a dont comment unless you have to policy. Jordan is far from the first Q player to face legal action. Generally, it is private until there are charges in the public record that someone can find (ie a scheduled appearance)

One thing about being a top player on a team is punishment and crime are very visible. And that's why leagues have stipulations about demeanor off the ice and accountability to protect image.
The league and the teams have a protocol. It isn't their place to comment on something that happened that is going to play out in the courts. They can only get in hot water doing that. They have the 5 game thing internally. Its been applied. Its hard to really hold a hearing and change that to longer. It would just muddy the Water for every future situation. The team will take flack for that - tough situation to be in but really what's fair? The suspend em and throw away the key mentality in the public is usually misguided. This is a people game with real lives. If this were a lesser player they may be able to press box them indefinitely. Albeit if it were a lesser player we wouldn't be discussing it. I do not believe anything was covered up by the league or the team.
