“His size, experience and scoring; he’s a guy that plays hard in all areas of the ice. A straight line, north-south player who our fans will grow to appreciate,” said Hulton on what prompted the Islanders to make this deal.
“Egor will bring a higher physical presence than past import players,” said Hulton.
Goriunov, a native of Moscow, Russia, stands at six-foot-two and weighs 190 lbs.
Hulton and the Islanders coaching staff made it a point early into this offseason to add some bigger players to help provide a strong on-ice impact.
“The playoff experience of the past two years reminded us of the importance of size, skill and experience. With the uncertainty of the import draft, we decided to trade for a known commodity in Egor,” said Hulton.

pretty good player to add for only a 5th. I get he takes up 2 slots but he will be a nice add to the top 6 for cheap.

As Hulton alluded to, the import draft is such a crapshoot now, especially with Russians still being disallowed. The Euro draft simply doesn't have the kind of impact it used to. Having a 20 year old Euro at this point is almost irrelevant because you're not likely to use that euro spot on anything better.

and they signed Plamondon the other day as well
so you might read between the lines of these moves and suggest Vos, Michel and Maruna might all be gone from the plans for 24-25

I agree that now it looks like 20’s might be Goriunov, Hughes, Bickle. Perhaps they move Bickle and go with a youthful goaltending tandem….then that opens up a spot for one of Vos/Michel. With Goriunov, I expect they have done their homework, but as a 20 y/o he might end up with opportunity to play pro in NA or Russia. It does not hurt to have some insurance in case something unexpected happens. and they signed Plamondon the other day as well so you might read between the lines of these moves and suggest Vos, Michel and Maruna might all be gone from the plans for 24-25

I would assume the plan is go for it in 25-26, in that case you’d likely want Hickey playing half the games or so this year if he’s gonna be the guy in the contending year.
I’m that case, is it better to run with Bickle as a mentor guy that can play the other half, or a younger guy that can create a good tandem in the contending year?

Also, I think they keep Bickle at least til Xmas, if not all year to keep us competitive. I suspect traded for picks at that time tho.

With the signing of Hickey in goal...and the addition of Goriunov, is the plan to bring Maruna back this season?
The Slovak had 16pts as a 17yr old last season with the Isles.

Based standings and the fact that the QMJHL has first pick this year, Charlottetown is slated to draft at #10 in the CHL Import draft this season.
I do not think they will bypass the chance to select this early in the draft, which signals to me that they will walk both Maruna and Aksels Ozols and play next season with Goriunov and a new Euro.
It is disappointing that things did not materialize better for Maruna. He was the 14th overall pick in last year's Import draft. The advertisements were that he was coming in as a 6'4" 200 lb centreman. Even his point totals are somewhat in the range compared to other Euros selected to the Q:
-Samuel Fiala in Val-d'Or was 23 points in 60 games as an 18 y/o and was picked at #5 -Jiri Klima in Shawinigan was 31 points in 54 games as a 17 y/o and was picked at #20 -Rimouski picked Lukas Hes at 29 and he lasted 16 games before they cut him loose -Frantisek Dej in Sherbrook was 16 points in 50 games as an 18 y/o and was picked at #47 -Yannik Ponzetto had 14 points between Halifax, Shawinigan, and Bathurst as a 17 y/o and was picked at #50
Those are the forwards taken by QMJHL teams in the 2023 Import draft. There is way less talent selected in the Euro draft now than compared to previous seasons. What used to be a draft where you'd find an immediate top line player now is a situation where a lot of picks are "draft and follow" type players. European countries are working harder to keep top end talent home. The USHL and NCAA are attractive options for European players. Having Russian and Belorussian players ineligible for a stretch further limited the talent pool.
So, you can make a case that there's merit in continuing to work with Maruna in hopes of drawing out his talent and making better use of his size. But I keep coming back to the fact that the Islanders NEVER used him as a center after he was taken off the top 2 lines (so say from November onward) plus the fact that he spent a lot of time as a healthy scratch.
I feel the decision was made during the season that he's not part of the long term plans here, thus I see them going a different direction. It is unfortunate that we weren't able to capitalize when we picked as high as we did (#14) but it is getting very difficult to bring in talent via the CHL Import draft.

They could take a shot and see if they could get someone to report knowing that Maruna is a fall back option.
