A-N just announced MacDougall as new Cats coach! Head Coach and Director of Hockey Ops. Taylor MacDougall will take over as assistant coach. Josh Hepditch will take the head coaching job at UNB. That worked out well for everyone involved. Nice to see Josh get a chance as HC and he gets to do it at home

Thats a hell of a creative and impressive hire. Working with his son for a team with big resources is something not everyone could offer so very smart of Moncton to connect those dots and bring in a great person to run the team that will command instant respect from a veteran team.

The Acadie Nouvelle report is not making it official. Even if they did I feel like we never actually hear what any of these staff members contract terms are. I sure hope the time between this article and hearing anything official isn't long. If it happens it feels like Gardiner coaching world juniors would be all but gaurenteed.

Excellent hire by the Wildcats.
Robert is getting to the end of his term of owning the Wildcats and is desperate to win a Memorial Cup - this hire puts them in a great position to do so.

It’s not uncommon for them to release how many years it’s for.

Seems to me a puzzling move. He is leaving a programme where he gets to recruit players and it has become a rather easy job with the success UNB has had. He also has total control of it. Also the overall talent is a step down with the exception of a few stand out players. Other than money I don't see that he has anything to gain by this at best horizontal move. Unless Hockey Canada has told him he must coach in the CHL if he is interested in coaching Team Canada's Junior team.

You don’t see the too many university coaches landing NHL gigs , perhaps he sees this as his pathway to the NHL

Six Figure Salary .......Stress Free Program ......5 Month Season with mainly Weekend Travel ......at 65 Years of age he is gonna start chasing the NHL Dream ? Nah ......if he goes to Moncton it's not about getting to the NHL ....it's because of one reason only .......$$$$$$$$$ ......Irving is gonna pay him a lot more Money than UNB .......simply because he can .

He’s 64, probably has a full pension from UNB, his kids are grown up, he likely doesn’t have many years coaching left and may want to take a shot at getting to the NHL. Moncton would almost definitely be paying him more. If it doesn’t work out, he’ll retire. He also has nothing left to prove at UNB. He literally cannot get better than last year. If he has any aspirations of getting to the NHL, he’s got to make a move now since he won’t get a Head Coaching job out of UNB and he would already be the second oldest coach in the NHL. Based on the rumours, he’d also get to work with his son. Which has to be a cool draw at the end of his career

I think people are overlooking the most obvious decision maker here. Where else could offer him the chance to get his son in the position to be shown as an elite decision maker in a CHL franchise where they both could feel like they had the autonomy and stability to run a team through a cycle? The NHL was never offering the chance to work directly with his son every day. The CIS was never offering the structure needed to be able to prove at that level how you can run a team off the ice or from behind a bench. This is him using his stature in Canadian hockey circles to help his son get the best possible learning experience in a place where they will have all the resources they need to try and be successful. We were all right in a way in saying that the CHL route couldn't offer him enough in terms of his own career end goals. But nobody considered this idea that this is actually all about getting the younger MacDougall in a position of authority in an organization that only happens with dad along for the ride.
