He’s 64, probably has a full pension from UNB, his kids are grown up, he likely doesn’t have many years coaching left and may want to take a shot at getting to the NHL. Moncton would almost definitely be paying him more. If it doesn’t work out, he’ll retire. He also has nothing left to prove at UNB. He literally cannot get better than last year. If he has any aspirations of getting to the NHL, he’s got to make a move now since he won’t get a Head Coaching job out of UNB and he would already be the second oldest coach in the NHL. I think people are overlooking the most obvious decision maker here. Where else could offer him the chance to get his son in the position to be shown as an elite decision maker in a CHL franchise where they both could feel like they had the autonomy and stability to run a team through a cycle? The NHL was never offering the chance to work directly with his son every day. The CIS was never offering the structure needed to be able to prove at that level how you can run a team off the ice or from behind a bench. This is him using his stature in Canadian hockey circles to help his son get the best possible learning experience in a place where they will have all the resources they need to try and be successful. We were all right in a way in saying that the CHL route couldn't offer him enough in terms of his own career end goals. But nobody considered this idea that this is actually all about getting the younger MacDougall in a position of authority in an organization that only happens with dad along for the ride. Once confirmed, I think its the following factors 1. $$$ - There was a ROI done in 2013 that has his payband between $75,000-99,000 at UNB. We could probably guess it might be in the $11500 - 125,000 range now with inflation. Its a great salary but this isn't someone whos extremely wealthy. An offer north of $250K is hard to pass up heading into retirement. Irving just freed up $250K with the City of Moncton. It might not even be crazy to think it could be closer to $500K 2. WJHC - It seems the next logical step from winning at u18s would be a WJHC head coach spot. Coaching a team in junior seems to be part of the process of being picked and won't interfere a ton with the Wildcats job. 3. Opportunity to help out Taylor in his hockey exec career - Working for the Wildcats in a GM type role is far better experience than UNB. Drafting, trading, dealing with NHL teams & scouts etc. 4. Remaining close to home - most games in junior are on weekends now,hes someone whos always been around at Avenir Centre anyways. Fredericton is a quick drive home for him. For all we know Irving might have offered to pay for a brand new shiny condo near Avenir Centre where him and his wife can stay during the season. Three sisters are a major Wildcats sponsor. It seems to me all of these factors finally lined up at once, where as 5 years ago he wasn't heading into retirement, taylor was still playing hockey and he wasnt involved with Hockey Canada.

It's becoming quite the circus for everyone involved, UNB if he's choosing to stay can just shut it down, the troll from their tweet was great but these conflicting articles from news outlets is getting exhausting...Could they be waiting for the finals to end before announcing maybe but still if this is what's to come with secrecy from an organization that is already less then forthcoming with fans...oh boy gonna be a season ages on AND off the ice

I know your talking about the Irving’s here but 500k is crazy to think what JR coach’s get. AHL coach’s don’t even get that high of contracts. Once again we’re talking about the Irving’s they can afford it but not likely about to dish that out. However in this case I can see 250 to 300 area when it would probably max out around 150 to 175 on some other experienced coach.

Money will not be what would bring a tenured university head coach to the Q. Especially one who is likely getting the highest university athletics pay level. For the work conditions at university level in general those coaches are better paid with better security. It's the cushy corner office of hockey life.
Q head coaches average 90K-160K.... only a few get more than that on short contracts.
It will be the challenge feeling he has done all he can at the university level if Gardiner moves to the Q. Yeah surely Irving can pay but it's really hard to walk away from a program like UNB and its probably not going to be for the money.

Pretty sure a big market Q coach makes a lot more than any CIS coach. Plus with the WC going for it and with MacDougall's profile he might get more than guys like Nolan and Torchetti got.

In all seriousness Halifax is at the start of a cycle and are probably looking for a younger guy trying to break into the CHL. Moncton needs a coach to compete now, even if it's a one and done.

I just dont think you pull MacDougall out of UNB to the Q. I think if that was what he wanted he would have already made that decision. The next step for him would be AHL head coach or NHL assistant coach. He may help do what he did for SJ and take over in the playoffs but I really dont think it would be a big promotion to the Q. What I do know is both owners of the Wildcats and the Mooseheads have the ability to throw money at him to try to make this happen. I am not sure how much the cycle of the Q would motivat MacDougall. Most successful coaches leave University to AHL.

I think that winning the World U18 Championship and the Complete Domination of College Hockey would / could get him an AHL Head Coaching or NHL Assistant's Gig .If he goes to Moncton it will have more to do with working with his Son ....Ex Eagle Taylor and the obvious ......................$$$$$$$ . Since it is a Go For It Year for The Wildcats .....what about a 1 Year LOA from UNB and go to Moncton as a Hired Gun for a Season . If he did that and delivered a Q Championship ( he already has a Memorial Cup lol ) he will write his own Ticket .
