www.tsn.ca/curling/news_story/?ID=218050&hubname=Coliseum will be hosting the World Curling Championships in 2009 from April 4-12 ... which is pretty neat ... but looks like the Cats are going to have scheduling problems, especially since the team should be at maturity and planning a lengthy playoff run that season ... an entire series at the Four Plex, anyone?

Wow, I would think the Coliseum would need some major HVAC upgrades in order to host such an event, to maintain a consistent ice surface.
So losing the venue for a playoff series would be a pain in the butt, but on the flipside maybe we'll see some improvements made to the Coliseum.

That's rough. I really don't think there's a way to get out of playing at an alternate rink that year. The Coliseum would be booked for a few days before and after, so let's say the 1st - 15th .. and that's at the least. I think Moncton needs another rink that is at least half the size of the Coliseum, or a little more. When we have conflicts like this then it gives us an alternate place to play the games, but can accomodate most of the fans. The 4plex holds around 1500 and the JL holds 2000 or so, not too sure. Those just aren't choices. If we have a place like the Forum in Halifax, that would be ideal. But I guess we should be lucky that our conflicts are, for the most part, during the first round of the playoffs, which draws a lot less then the semi's or the finals would.

I think the 4-Ice seats over 2,000 because the crowd at the Bathurst game the other night was about 1,600 and there were still at least 20% empty seats.
Still, not where you want to host a playoff game.

Still, not where you want to host a playoff game. I don't know how they keep track of how many people were actually at the game though. So who knows if that number was accurate or not. The 4 Plex website cites them as holding 1500. ** The Tim Hortons 4 Ice Centre Glaces will be home to 4 NHL size arenas (200’x85’), with one feature arena that can accommodate 1500 spectators ** Another place I thought of, if they needed somewhere to play .. although I don't see this happening because there would be no fans there .. the rink in Summerside where they played in exhibition. With Schurman being there ..

IMO they really screwed up on the 4ice center...the main rink is mediocre at best....for a complex that is less than 10 years old it is poorly designed. While they were spending millions of $$ to build this large complex you'd think they'd spend the extra $$$ to build a nice main rink that seats at least 3500-4500....it's almost like they ran out of room while building, especially in the other 3 rinks with the seats in the upper corners

Yes..but they will schedule the games in saint john so that there is a game every night... saint john vs one and the cats vs another... im sure they can fit it all in... hey maybe we could get them to put some sort of ice plant at rocky stone and flood it and pray for a real cold april...again we have 17 mths of praying... maybe a good base of frozen fries would do the trick..then flood over that

Doesn't Harbour Station have trade shows and such in March/April? If so, I doubt it'd be easy to get ice time in that rink unless the Dogs somehow miss the playoffs that year. Aitken Centre perhaps?
What a mess... University Cup last April and next April, now curling in April 2009, trade shows at the same time every year... RKI must be getting so sick of it.

I agree that the 4-Ice was screwed up. I know other groups originally bidding for the project had other ideas for the main rink....
It really was the perfect opportunity to build a 3,000 to 4,000 seat venue. Moncton can't justify another rink the size of the Coliseum, and with the 4-Ice so new I can't see anything else being built in the forseeable future.

well maybe we can use all the ice surfaces at the four plex... and cycle fans in to the main rink for one period ..so all get to see one period live and the rest on a giant screen..... I kidding ofcourse...
