ST. JOHN'S - It was not the way the Saint John Sea Dogs wanted their trip to Newfoundland to end.
After winning the opener of the three-game set Thursday, Saint John lost on a late power-play marker Saturday and were dominated Sunday in a 6-1 loss to the St. John's Fog Devils in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Luke Adam had a pair of goals Sunday for the Fog Devils while Maxime Pomerleau, Nick Layton, Phil Mangan and Matt Fillier added singles. Pascal Amyot had the lone Sea Dogs goal.
Team captain Alex Grant said the Sea Dogs stopped playing as a team after getting down a couple of goals on Sunday.
"Today was just embarrassing out there"¦nothing was clicking that's for sure," Grant said. "We played a little more as individuals tonight and didn't stick together as a team."
On Saturday, the Sea Dogs four-game winning streak was snapped as the Fog Devils downed Saint John 3-2. Samuel Granache, Fillier and Mathieu Labrie scored for St. John's while Keven Charland and Scott Howes replied for the Sea Dogs.
Sunday's first period saw Saint John head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu make some changes with rookie Steven Anthony on the top line with Chris Di Domenico and Ryan Sparling while Mike Thomas took shifts as a defenceman.
Brett Gallant didn't change anything, dropping the gloves on his first shift for a long fight with Fog Devils forward Matt Boland. Gallant landed the bigger shots despite being tied up for most of the tilt.
The Fog Devils didn't change either, scoring the opening goal for the third-straight game. Fillier fired a shot through the five-hole of Sea Dogs starter Travis Fullerton after St. John's broke out on a four-on-two.
The Fog Devils made it 2-0 thanks to a giveaway by Saint John that led to a two-on-one rush. Mangan ripped one by Fullerton after taking a pass in the slot from Jean-Simon Allard at 14:04.
The Fog Devils dominated play in the first with several odd-man rushes while the Sea Dogs didn't get a good scoring chance until late in the first.
St. John's got a five-on-three midway through the second with Anthony and Alexandre Leduc in the box. Di Domenico somehow had the best chance killing the penalty and drew a charging penalty on Luke Adam to cut it to a four-on-three.
The Fog Devils capitalized on the man advantage as Allard fed a cross-ice pass to Pomerleau, who fired a rocket over the glove of Fullerton at 11:47.
The Sea Dogs' troubles continued in the second when St. John's made it 4-0 at 18:43. Fullerton made the initial stop off Layton's shot, but Adam was on the doorstep to bang it in.
The Fog Devils entered the final frame shutting out the Sea Dogs 4-0.
St. John's didn't let up in the third, scoring at 1:20 with Alexandre Picard in the box for slashing.
A tic-tac-toe passing play on the power play was finished off by Layton for a 5-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs got a two-man advantage early in the final period, but were denied a goal by Fog Devils goaltender Timo Pielmeier.
Di Domenico did something he's only done once before this season - fight. The Woodbridge, Ont., native dropped the gloves with Pat O'Keefe and landed a few good shots to win the decision.
The Sea Dogs broke through with a late power-play marker to make the score 5-1 as Amyot let a shot go that found its way by Pielmeier.
The rough stuff continued late in the third as Gallant dropped the gloves for a second time. This time, the Saint John tough guy pummeled Fillier in the Sea Dogs' zone. Gallant got the only penalty on the play.
Fights would be the only thing the Sea Dogs won on Sunday as Adam scored his second of the game in the final minute.
Beaulieu said the team looked average in the loss.
"We didn't execute our game plan, we were selfish, we didn't compete and they took advantage of it," the head coach said.
The loss drops the Sea Dogs' record to 26-12-1-2 while the Fog Devils improve to 20-20-1-3.
The Sea Dogs are back on home ice Wednesday against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
GEAR: Steven Anthony and Simon Despres arrived in St. John's late Saturday afternoon, but only Anthony's gear made the trek from London, Ont., and the World Under-17 Championship. Despres' equipment was lost in transit and he was unable to suit up on Sunday. The Sea Dogs dressed 13 forwards and five defencemen for the final game of the three-game set with the Fog Devils.
TRADE: The Rimouski Oceanic acquired power forward Keven Veilleux and a fourth-round pick in 2009 from the Victoriaville Tigres. Going the other way are second and first-round picks in 2009 as well as forward Maxime Tanguay and defenceman Keven Dupont. In other trades, the Moncton Wildcats dealt Martin Baca to the Shawinigan Cataractes for an eighth-round pick in 2009; the Titan acquired defenceman Lucas Lang from the Gatineau Olympiques in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2008. The Olympiques picked up Patrik Prokop, second and seventh-round picks in 2009 from Shawinigan for a first-round selection in 2008 and an eighth-round pick in 2009.
