SEA DOGS VS SCREAMING EAGLES TONIGHT!! - 7:00PM - HARBOUR STATION

In Cape Breton’s first game in the Port City this season, the Sea Dogs were beaten soundly by a score of 6-1 in their home opener on September 21. Saint John rebounded in their next match against the Screaming Eagles however, earning a come-from-behind 6-4 win at Cape Breton’s expense on November 25 in Sydney, NS.

Chris DiDomenico scored three goals against the Screaming Eagles in last month’s road win, giving the 18-year old sniper two hat tricks on the season and three in his career.

PLAYER TO WATCH: New Brunswick native Jordan Clendenning is currently in his fifth QMJHL season. The 20-year old winger was dealt from Acadie-Bathurst to Cape Breton earlier this season after having registered 21 points (8G-13A) in 21 games for the Titan. In 2006-07, the 5’11”, 188 lb. winger tallied 16GP-35A-51P in addition to 117PIM in 64 games played for Acadie-Bathurst.

SEA DOGS DROP 4-3 DECISION TO SCREAMING EAGLES
Saint John Is Now 20-9-1-2 On The Season Following Hard-Fought Home Loss

SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs lost in regulation at Harbour Station for just the third time this season on Saturday night, falling to the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles by a score of 4-3.

After earning an early 1-0 lead, the Sea Dogs surrendered three unanswered goals to the Screaming Eagles to lose command of the match early in the second period. Saint John battled hard in the second half of the game however, very nearly pulling out a third period comeback, but Cape Breton was able to hang on to their 4-3 lead in the late going to take a two-games-to-one lead in the season series between the divisional rivals.

Michael Kirkpatrick, Francois Gauthier, and Alex Grant scored for Saint John in a losing effort, while Cape Breton received their offensive production courtesy of Chris Culligan, Nick MacNeil, Alexandre Quesnel, and Joey Haddad.

The home team struck first on Saturday night, with Francois Gauthier scoring a breakaway goal 5:29 into the first period. The 19-year old winger took a saucer pass from Scott Howes inside the visitors’ blue line and broke in all alone on starting Screaming Eagles goalie Olivier Roy, making a quick fake to the backhand prior to firing a hard wrist shot to the back of the Cape Breton net to earn his sixth tally of the season.

Cape Breton pulled even with 21.1 seconds remaining in the frame, as Joey Haddad wired a one-timer past starting Sea Dogs goaltender Travis Fullerton to earn a power play marker for the visitors, making the score 1-1 in the process.

The Screaming Eagles then took a 2-1 lead 5:09 into the second period when Alexandre Quesnel knocked a rebound into an open Saint John net to earn his sixth goal of the season. A goal off the stick of Chris Culligan 1:01 later then brought an end to Fullerton’s night, as rookie net minder Robert Mayer was installed between the pipes by the Saint John coaching staff.

Mayer was tested shortly after entering the game, robbing Dean Ouellet with a huge glove save off of a one-timer from close range to keep the Screaming Eagles from further adding to their lead.

The Sea Dogs then pulled to within one of the visitors at the 10:55 mark of the middle frame, as rookie forward Michael Kirkpatrick beat Roy with a well-placed shot to earn a power play marker with Keven Charland and Alex Grant picking up assists on the successful scoring play.

Cape Breton then restored their two-goal advantage 3:34 later, as Nick MacNeil beat Mayer from the point with a rocket of a slap shot to the top corner that earned the 18-year old his 14th tally of 2007-08.

The visiting squad from northern Nova Scotia continued to apply heavy pressure upon the Sea Dogs throughout the duration of the middle frame, but some solid work by Mayer, who made ten saves in 13:50 of action in the second, kept the Screaming Eagles from further adding to their lead as the game readied to enter its third act.

Saint John pulled to within immediate striking distance of Cape Breton’s lead 6:20 into the third period, with Team Captain Alex Grant beating Roy with a hard, accurate slap shot from just inside the blue line to earn his ninth goal of the season on the power play.

The Sea Dogs earned two more man-up opportunities in the third period, but were unable to capitalize on either despite some high-quality scoring chances. Several big saves by Roy in the closing minutes enabled the Screaming Eagles to hold on to their precarious one-goal lead as the final buzzer sounded, earning an important two points at the Sea Dogs’ expense as a result.

Saint John and Cape Breton will meet again on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station. The puck drops at 4:00pm.
