SEA DOGS FALL SHORT IN SEASON OPENER
Saint John Loses 4-1 In Lewiston; Payton Liske Scores In Hard-Fought Road Loss
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, September 13, 2007
LEWISTON, ME --- The Saint John Sea Dogs kicked off their 2007-08 season with a loss on Thursday night, falling to the Lewiston MAINEiacs by a score of 4-1 at Androscoggin Bank Coliseum.
While it was the MAINEiacs who were honoured in a pre-game ceremony recognizing their 2006-07 President’s Cup Title, it was the Sea Dogs who exuded championship-calibre bravado in the early going on Thursday night, taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission while exerting a strong physical presence upon their divisional rivals. Lewiston came back strong in the second and third periods however, tallying the final four goals of the game to earn the victory.
Payton Liske scored the lone goal for Saint John while Danick-Hudon Paquette, Marc-Andre Daneau, and Stefano Gilati (2) provided the offence for Lewiston.
Despite the loss, Sea Dogs Head Coach/General Manager Jacques Beaulieu took several positives out of Thursday’s opening match.
“We definitely started the game well,” said Beaulieu following the loss. “We played hard in the first but we weren’t able to keep our pace going for a full sixty minutes obviously. We need to learn to maintain a high level of intensity for three periods, which I’m confident we’ll be able to do once we get a few games under our belts.”
After a lengthy exchange of chances at either end of the ice to open the game, Payton Liske scored the Sea Dogs’ first goal of 2007-08 at the 16:53 mark of the first period; the unassisted tally put Saint John up 1-0. Meanwhile, starting Sea Dogs goaltender Travis Fullerton got off to a strong start on Thursday, stopping all five shots sent his way in the opening twenty minutes, while Saint John’s penalty killing unit dominated their special teams battles against Lewiston’s power play, holding the MAINEiacs scoreless on all four of their man-up opportunities in the first to give the visiting squad from Port City a one-goal advantage as the opening period came to an end.
The Sea Dogs’ penalty killing unit continued to see a lot of ice time early in the second, shutting the MAINEiacs’ power play down once more before finally surrendering a goal off the stick of Danick-Hudon Paquette at the 6:42 mark of the middle frame.
With 4:13 remaining in the second, Lewiston was assessed a minor penalty for having too many men on the ice, an act which gave Saint John their fourth power play chance of the night. Despite some quality chances from close range created by the Sea Dogs’ top offensive line of Chris DiDomenico, Payton Liske, and Ryan Sparling, MAINEiacs goaltender Peter Delmas managed to keep the puck out of the Lewiston net during the multi-shot five-on-four session, and the second period ended with the score knotted at one apiece.
The MAINEiacs took a 2-1 lead at the 7:12 of the third, as Stefano Gilati beat Fullerton through the five-hole on a semi-breakaway to give the home team their first lead of the night. Shortly after Gilati’s goal, the Sea Dogs went back on the power play as Tom Michalik was called for tripping deep in the Lewiston zone. Delmas continued to confound Saint John’s shooters however, as both Alexandre Leduc and Francois Guathier were denied by the 17-year old on quality chances midway through the period as Lewiston clung desperately to their one-goal advantage.
After Delmas made another big save off the stick of Michael Kirkpatrick, the MAINEiacs scored to double their lead at the 12:43 mark of regulation’s final frame, with Gilati scoring his second of the night to provide his squad with an insurance tally.
With 4:33 remaining in the third, Brett Gallant faced off with Lewiston forward Todd Chidova at centre ice, hoping to provide the Sea Dogs with a spark of inspiration as he earned a one-sided victory over the MAINEiacs’ top enforcer.
Lewiston went up 4-1 shortly after the Gallant-Chinova bout however, with team captain Marc-Andre Daneau scoring on a breakaway to seal the victory for the defending league champs.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a road contest versus the PEI Rocket on Sunday, September 16. Saint John’s first home game of the season is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 21 at 7:30pm.

Here we go with his BULLS**T again.... well then enlighten us...... Beaulieu's record as a coach is abysmal. It's not bullshit it's fact. I would ask you justify your statement but I know you lack the ability to do so - too much homer and you try to hide the facts. I use facts (Beaulieu's record) - you use fantasy. Explain that? And how the hell does such a clueless entity become a mod? Says it all. I like most of the stuff you post Catatonic Moose, usually because it causes a shitstorm or debate or whatever. I am guessing that's what you wanted here.\ Going by record alone is not a fair assessment of JB's job thus far as coach or GM. He did inherit a team that lost just about every game in the second half in the year previous. On top of that, the first year team lost 5 20's, both goalies, and a bunch of players that didn't even belong in the league. He basically had a team of Grant Sparling and Rioux. I'd include Bergeron but anyone that watched the effort he put in on the ice in the second year, and his typical partying it up off the ice during the off season and season itself... We also had Schutz I suppose but he blew out his knee and healed up just in time to be shipped out. Like was said not too many coaches could have walked into that situation and put up an impressive record. Not saying JB is the best guy out there. He's still learning too. He's not doing a bad job though for certain. Saying "look at his record" is just unfair though, considering the situation. The quality of hockey being played here has gone way up. Bad apples with off ice issues have been shipped out. It's rare to see people floating out on the ice and when they do JB usually puts them in their place. The atmosphere is tons better surrounding the team. If only he could do something about those Harbour Station higher-ups that are trying to make the rink a library.

I think JB was out-coached tonight. Nothing new there then! He's been constantly outcoached - and will continue to be so. He's an awful record, but besides which, the decisions he's made as a coach haven't been great. Not getting down on JB this early but it sounded like he was trying to get first two lines in shape in a hurry. Dont wait until we miss the playoffs to play your 3-4th lines . Roll your lines and you will not run out of gas in the third period.

Yes on the broadcast the announcer said the Thomas line was very effective when on . Just not on much. You can blame it on Goaltending, but if we are going in to opposing rinks and wearing out top 2 lines ,pk ,pp, regular shift were going to lose more often then not.Team suppose to be a better team not a better two lines only.

The big problem for you guys last night was you only scored 1 goal. Not many games will be won in the Q 1-0. Weather it was because your players were tired or got stymied by the opposing teams net minder is inconsequential. Maybe it was both? You guys needed to put the puck in the net while you had the chance I wouldn't blame Fullerton for the loss I'd blame your teams lack of discipline as a whole you guys gave up 8pp to Lewy’s 4 last night that’s enough to take anyone’s office out of a game.

No need to worry in Saint John. You guys played very well last night and lost to a goalkeeper. If it wasn't for Delmas, its a whole different story. Travis didn't do too bad, he lost to a shift in momentum and opening night heroics.
I am impressed by your growth. You guys have a team.
