Putintsev is actually considered a US player you may have thought they got him in the Import Draft. Also, people may get pretty excited over Drew Packman - this kid is a bus on skates, dual athlete in Football and Hockey most of his life, cant wait to see him again on the ice. Keep your heads up gents.

My point though was that you can't say that Halifax has a GREAT draft record when comparing your last 5 years (which is the year before the MacKinnon draft forward with only one reduced pick draft) to a team like Saint John (which had all their players graduate in the middle of the cycle like you are at now) yields that we had less top 6 forwards (17 to 14) but more drafted by us (10 to 7). We had one more top 4 D (9 to 8), but 5 more drafted by us (7 to 2), and you've drafted 2 starting goalies to our 1. I took SJ as a SJ fan, but if you took Charlottetown, I would expect comparable numbers (though worse obviously). If you took one of the Quebec teams other than Quebec, things would likely look uglier. SJ has had how many 1st overall picks in 11 years? 5? And Hali has had 8-9 first Rd picks in those years compared to 16-17 by SJ. So about twice the number of picks and higher picks, that's been the issue with Moose drafting... You mix in some risky picks not working out (Gilbert, Eichel) and it would be easy for any team with those picks to have a better drafted player list compared to Halifax.

Pretty good stats, but not sure level of play in the league he played in. www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=194202

I noticed that there was no mention of the 2nd Euro drafted, Joachim Blichfeld, as a player to watch at training camp. I guess that takes care of the Mooseheads' oversupply of Euros, with Blichfeld not expected to show and Ehlers sticking with the Jets or playing in Europe.

All indications were that he was looking for NCAA. Power-forward style game that isnt afraid of anything. Great strength and very good skills. Nose for the net and can create havoc in the slot. Decent skater for his size although he has typical agility issues seen in wide-blocky players - I havent seen him skate in two years so he may have corrected that. I also cannot comment on his defensive commitment.

Well the Moose tweeted out a picture of Meier taping the intro video for the players for before the game etc and he is wearing an "A". Hmmmm. So curious as to who the Captain will be? D. Moynihan or Bent?

Now that we know the team and the Moose season is about to start this Friday here's some thoughts on this coming season.
Otto Sommpi: looks pretty good but definitely no Ehlers. From what I have seen of him I think a comparable player would be Knotek. I think he is a step above Knotek but pretty similar.
Arnaud Durandeau: the kid has skill and could become a great Q-leaguer. Just he needs to learn the league first. I can see him getting plenty of 2nd unit PP time. I think he might be stuck on the 3rd or 4th line till after Christmas trade deadline.
Ilya Putintesv: this kid is going to be interesting to watch this year. He comes in advertised as a big time goal scorer. Everything I have seen so far I can understand why. Has a great shot, and an eye for the net. The puck seems to find him in the offensive zone. The problem is he lacks a lot in the defensive zone. If anyone has paid attention to the way Dom try's to coach he wants everyone to play in both ends. Should be interesting in seeing how that part of the game comes along.
Barrett Dachyshan: I would have liked to see him here last year but the year of midget didn't hurt him at all. As it stands he in my opinion is ahead of Crossley at centre. He to me is 3rd line guy. I think he will get a lot of PK time and maybe 2nd unit PP as well. He has a great two way type of game. If the moose trade Danny Moynihan I have no problem with Barret on the 2nd line either. He might get that time durning the world Jr's if Sommpi goes to play.
Joel Bishop and Dom Blain-Dupius: basically the same player. Both are going to be thrown in as the 12 forward and just be energy guys this year. I know that sounds like they are just throw ins but they are actually both pretty good players. It's just this team is a little crowded.
Walter Flower: from what I saw I really think he should have gone back to midget for a year. Just don't think he is ready yet. Has a huge shot but has yet to put it on net. Always misses wide. Skates alright but needs to gain a step. He's big though. It might be a long year for him.
Cooper Jones: He's a small guy that might have some problems with some the big boys in his own zone. On the other side of the puck though I think is where he is going to flourish. He Skates well and cares the puck well and is a great passer. His past numbers shows he is an offensive mind guy. I seen him jump into the play often in the few games he played. I think he's a PP QB of the future for sure.
That covers the rookies. I think everyone know all the other players beside maybe Donaghey. Well he is our number one guy on the back end. And maybe our number one trade chip. The thing is don't expect a kings ransom for him. On a contending team he should be a 2nd pairing guy. I think 2 assets is a good expectations for him. Something LIKE a high pick and a young player. Or 2 picks with one going back at the draft for a player.
I said Donaghey is our top trade chip and I kind of hope I'm wrong there and the Moose will trade Meier too. For a team really looking to make a run he can be one of the most attractive targets. There's a few problems though. One being all the Euro stipulations for another team. the other thing is will Halifax trade him? I don't think they will. Other teams might be willing to pay big for him though. All they have to do is look at last year with Quebec. I'm not saying this was on the table or it could have happened but if they had Ehlers they might have won the Q league and done better at the Mem Cup? Now Meier is a game changer on that level but he is a game changing type of player.
I don't think it's a real secret but this teams strength is going to be on the defensive side. They have above average goaltending and a lager group of returning defence men.
Putting the puck in the net is where the team is going to need some help I think. Meier and Moynihan are proven goal scorers. Yes they did play with Ehlers but they can still score with out him, just not as much. After those two they need help big time. Fortier and maybe Connor Moynihan are going to have to step up their game this year. Putintesv and Sommpi I think will contribute but how much is the question really.
I think this team will finish somewhere around the same as last year but this division is a year older which makes it harder. Teams like SJ, PEI, CB are contenders now. Moncton and Halifax are pretty comparable to each other now I think. Connor Garland is an X factor though. Bathurst I think is a team no one can really take lightly. They made some good moves and are growing still but are on the right track for sure. They can surprise some teams this year. I think they will make the playoffs this year.

I thought the trading period was over. They are most likely using the AP loophole- same thing happened with Garrett Clarke 5 years ago when he was kindly told to leave the Mooseheads and was traded to Shawi and was allowed to play a limited number of games with them before the Xmas trading period kicked in.
