Excellent day for Eagles fans. Started with a good trade for both teams. Fornier adds depth and size with what appears to be upside potential. What more can someone say about Bowers. I thought they may have taken a Dman or forward Durandeau at 6. But this Hoyt kid looks like he'll be fun to watch. I think the biggest surprise to some may have been the choice of the smaller goalie in the 2nd, but picking goalies is more often a gamble to see who your getting over time anyway. I'm really hoping the team can entice a free agent or two to come to this team. Overall, they balanced the present with the future. I think most should be happy.

The balancing of the present with the future is what I was most impressed about, we have a potential big line of: Dubois - Bowers - Hoyt For after this year and its just looking real good, seriously can anyone think of a team next year that has a better team than us? Because I can't. I know the game is played on ice and not on paper, and we learned that with last years first half start, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about next year and the future.

I see one of three situations... 1) Saint John was lowballing CB from the beginning. No one knows what the offer was but we have a decent idea of what the pick SHOULD have been worth. If the offer was less valuable than 5th overall in next year's draft, they'd be crazy to accept. 2) Cape Breton called Halifax to create a bidding war, pissed off Saint John and Saint John dropped their offer. Again, completely possible. Especially after how upset the Morgan Ellis situation made Saint John. 3) Saint John made a legitimate and good offer and Cape Breton's management decided that they wanted to take their chances knowing that Bowers didn't want to play in CB. This would make this another Roy situation, where they picked the guy who was rated in the spot with no regards for the situation at all. Not sure if intentional or not, but I think these are ranked in the order of most likely, with #1 being the most likely by quite a margin. 1) I really don't think CB and SJ make for good trading partners right now. CB is going for it in 2016 and SJ in 2017, with each team expecting to be pretty good in the other's "go for it" year. While the 9th and 10th picks are nice, along with maybe a pick next year, they aren't going to help CB win next year without having to make another trade. They certainly aren't going to help CB win next year any more than Bowers would be expected to. The assets CB is going to want are the ones that SJ aren't going to want to part with. If SJ had an abundance of 96s (more than the 3 that could return as 20s for 2017), they might move one to CB to get a deal done. But they already did that 5 months ago. Halifax seems like a more likely trading partner since they are at a different stage of their cycle. 2) Never heard about that situation. I heard a rumour (not sure how reliable) that SJ was upset with Moncton because they thought they had a deal for Gormley but it couldn't be announced until after the WJC. Meanwhile Ellis, who was SJ's plan B, gets traded to Shawinigan, and we all know how the rest played out. I've also heard other rumours that conflict with that one but none of them involved being upset with the Eagles over anything. Of course, the recent hiring of their new coach would suggest they were never upset with Moncton or are certainly over it by now. But even if there was a situation where SJ was upset with CB over Ellis for some reason, I'm pretty sure Darrell Young doesn't give a **** about what happened in 2012. And those above him are either over it, or don't interfere and let him do his job, otherwise the Leblanc trade that brought Velano to SJ likely doesn't happen. 3) I guess it depends on what you would consider to be a "legitimate and good offer", but I can't really see it. As previously mentioned, the guys CB are going to want are the guys SJ really don't want to part with. If SJ wanted Bower enough to offer any of them up along with the 9th and 10th picks, CB would take them in a heartbeat I'm sure since they could do more than Bowers to help CB win this year. That's even assuming Bowers reports this year, which I believe he will, but at the time they probably weren't too sure.

He is not saying anything wrong. On paper this team is solid. God knows how they will be on the ice but on paper they look good.

I can honestly say that I am quite impressed with this draft. We lucked out with Velano being granted exceptional status. We basically drafted #1 overall. Bowers may not report but even if he does not I still say we made out pretty decent with this. The N Roy trade + O Leary pick for example.
Like many have said the small goalie is a little bit odd. I think small players can do fine in any league but my opinion has never changed on small goalies. They must see something in him.

They have that kind of potential. We should be very excited about that. How it will play out could be a completely different thing.

I think it comes down to how well the first half goes and if you need to add a big veteran piece somewhere for a run because that likely costs one of those.

Now to examine where we sit after this weekend.
Lazarev (19)/ Bishop (19) / Svechnikov (19) Ranger (20) / Martineau (18) / Dubois (17) Fournier (18) / Tower (18)) / Boucher (18) Hoyt (16)/ Bowers (16) / MacSween (19) / Smith (17)
Leblanc (19) / Leveille (19) Gosselin (20) / MacIntyre (19) Deschamps (19) / Beaudin (17) Roy (16) / Sansfacon (16)
Belanger (20) Jessiman (16) / Dugan (18)
And the top picks over the next 2 drafts: 2016 Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 3 (Chicoutimi) Round 3 (Blainville)
2017 Round 1 Round 2 Round 2 (Sherbrooke) Round 3
Not saying all 5 of the top picks from this draft make the team out of camp. Still lots of time to decide that, i'm more or less listing how the depth chart stands in my opinion. If anyone knows of anything i've missed please point it out.
The only huge holes left are a #1 center / winger and maybe a top 4 defenceman. As you see based on the assets we have there will be no issue in both filling those holes come trade period time in December.
I don't know much about Fournier but he sounds like a solid bottom 6 guy right away with top 6 potential and could help make us very hard to play against if our bottom 6 has guys like him, Boucher, Tower, and Bowers. Never mind the solid top 6 with potentially a 2015 NHL 1st rounder and 2016 NHL 1st rounder. Shane Bowers is a 2017 eligible...
Jessiman seems like a solid pick. Won a championship with his team. Not very big which means nothing at this level other then he could be a 3 or 4 year starter here.
Sacha Roy is described as a very hard hitting defenceman. A player with a style like that could leap frog a Beaudin over time for ice time. Very interested to see what our top 7 looks like come opening night in September if a player like him pushes to make the team.
Bowers is all but being given the key to the city from Dumont. He had a very lengthy chat with him on the stage. Said he told him he could follow Svechnikov and Dubois on their NHL paths. Kid definitely had a chip on his shoulder not going #1 to SJ. We could see the long term benefits from him being pissed and wanting to prove them wrong.
Ranger should go a long way to replacing some of the experience lost in our graduating 20's. Sounds like he's going to be a fan favorite all year.

ugliest google translate ever lol For what it's worth, Dumont also said he was confident Roy would report to CB. Hopefully this is different.

Awesome. Can't wait to see him in camp. I have him penciled in as our #3C, but we'll see what happens.

My opinion on goaltending is this: For their future at this level, i'm not overly concerned and will gladly take a talented 5'9" guy at 15 who can play 4 or 5 years as a #1. In terms of being an NHL prospect, you almost have to be over 6 feet now or they won't even spend their time watching you.

He is going to say that to the media either way. I think he was upset he didn't go where planned. Guessing Dubois calmed him down and so will time. Hopefully he's at camp wanting to show SJ what they missed out on.

If not for the whole Veleno exceptional status thing, SJ would have picked Bowers #1. As it was SJ still tried to find a way to get him. They are well aware how good Bowers is and were likely higher on Bowers than any other team in the draft. Bowers has nothing to prove to the SJ brass....they all know how good he is.
