Hughes Lafreniére Kokaniemi Poehling 2023 Stanley Cup here we come. Price and Weber will be in their 50’s by then "..............so we may have to do something about that "...........but we will be better than The Leafs or The Penguins down the middle .

As a Habs fan, I don't care if those four are flanked by beer-leaguers. I just want competent centremen.

Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard were put on waivers, so it looks like Garrett Sparks is the new backup goalie.
Connor Carrick was put on waivers and then was traded to the Dallas Stars for a 2019 7th round pick. If Carrick plays in 50 games this season, the pick becomes a 6th.
It appears that Martin Marincin and Justin Holl have made the team.
This looks like the roster for the 2018-19 season.
Forwards: Tavares, Marleau, Kadri, Hyman, Brown, Leivo, Matthews, Lindholm, Marner, Kapanen, Johnsson, Gauthier, Ennis
Defensemen: Rielly, Zaitsev, Gardiner, Hainsey, Ozhiganov, Dermott, Marincin, Holl
Goalies: Andersen, Sparks
Still no Nylander. Hopefully he gets signed at some point.
Good luck to Toronto this season!

I had heard a couple weeks ago that this was their goaltending plan as they think McIlhenny passes waivers before Sparks does. But ultimately Babcock will want McIlhenny behind Andersen while Dubas protects the asset of Sparks and tries to find him a home somewhere. Will be interesting to see how those dominoes fall in the coming days. Unless McIlhenny gets claimed, which imo is a real chance after his solid year last year, it kind of answers all the questions. But if not there's 3 goalies for 2 spots so something has to give.

personally, I've never been impressed with Marincin's play so I kinda don't like the fact he's on the team but maybe it's just me.
I would not be surprised to see Sparkes traded at some point if he's not kept entirely over McElhinney. There's nothing more for Sparkes to prove at the AHL level.

Won AHL goaltender of the year, the Calder Cup as a #1, and is 10 years younger. It's not that surprising he's being kept around vs risk losing him on waivers. They think NYI will take him if they waive him. Waiving McIlhenny is the surprising part for me. He had a solid season last year. I can see someone like Carolina taking him off waivers.

This is something pretty interesting that I haven't seen discussed re: Nylander: www.capfriendly.com/faq#rfa-caphitBased on a league bylaw, RFA's who sign multiyear deals in-season see a higher cap hit in year 1, but a reduced cap hit in years 2+

Both goalies claimed on waivers. McIlhenny to Carolina Pickard to Philly Not a big deal. Sparks is ready to be backup no sense him being in the minors another year.

This is something pretty interesting that I haven't seen discussed re: Nylander: www.capfriendly.com/faq#rfa-caphitBased on a league bylaw, RFA's who sign multiyear deals in-season see a higher cap hit in year 1, but a reduced cap hit in years 2+ I can see both sides of the coin on this deal... The Leafs are likely looking at it and saying they’re interested in giving him 8% of their salary cap, which is the average of the comparable contracts. Placing him in at around $6.35 per on a long-term deal. Pushing the fact, that they want to keep this core together and believing in his potential, maybe they’re willing to go as high as say 6.5. Something in that range, I feel would be more than fair based on what other guys have gotten around the league. Nylander on the other hand is probably saying, well look at my body of work on the 3 years of my deal... back to back 60+ point seasons and another part season. My 3 seasons on average were more impressive then Pastrnak’s 3 seasons prior to signing his contract and he only had the one really good year before they signed at a longer AAV then what you’re offering me. Then look at the amount the cap has risen over the last 5 years, every 5 years it seems to grow by roughly 10 million. If I sign at around 8% of the cap now, roughly 5 years from now I’m going to be underpaid by 1-1.5 million and that’s just if I stay the same player I am now, not including my growth for potential, which I think I will do. So if you want to sign me to a long-term deal, then I need somewhere in the 7+ million range because by the time we get to the end of 7 years, at an AAV of 8%, I’m going to be way underpaid. Obviously these aren’t real reported on scenarios, just the perspective (as I’ve chosen to look at it) from both sides. What I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall in both camps, just to see what their argument is and why they both want the deals they want.

If either side really budges hard it could go up or down. The alternative is a 1 year or 2-3 year bridge deal.

Great character win tonight for the boys. Didn’t play there best but great teams find away to win. Matthews was the best lead by far. He should easily hit 50 goals this year. I love shanny but I think he’s a bit off base with his comments about the young leafs are going to have to take less money . We have tons of cap room stop playing hard ball and pay these guys! Go leafs go

More Dreger: "I don't believe that William Nylander has shaved anything off his original ask. I don't think he has. I think he's still stuck on 8.5 - Leon Draisaitl money." #Leafs #TMLtalk 1050
Dreger (later in segment): "I think they're still north of $8 million, and that's the ask and that's the expected get from Nylander and Lewis Gross, his agent, and his father, Michael Nylander."
Chris Nichols @nicholsonhockey · 5m5 minutes ago
More Dreger added: "Give credit to both sides here. When we talk about these numbers, we're piecing together snippets of information and coming to a conclusion. But that's where it's at now."
