To expand the market reach of Roger's having Cherry didnt make sense in fact it was counterintuitive. The followers of Cherry consume the game and always will. It's no coincidence Kypreos and Doug MacLean were let go earlier. The population shift in Canada makes there a market to tap into. Fans that prefer soccer or basketball includes younger audiences and newcomers to Canada where the NHL product is not engrained. They never appeal to that big piece of the country with Cherry in tow. Roger's paid 5.5 billion $ on the property. While NHL is tapping world markets there is opportunity right under Roger's noses so they are moving out the old stalwarts anyway. Cherry made it really easy for them to walk out from under his contract with them. I think Kypreos and MacLean were more victims of budget cuts than not being able to talk “modern hockey”. I think Kypreos is one of the more insightful hockey guys after Ferraro(my favorite), McKenzie, Friedman and Marc Denis.

I love don watched him every Saturday night. I grew up in a house where when Don was on you shut up and listened. I’m pissed that he was fired over the comment. Nothing he said was raciest. He generalized everybody into one and used “you people” it would take him his whole segment to single out everyone. I for one agree with him if you enjoy and want to live in this ( what was such a great country until this left wing shift) you should donate and support the troops. He was including everyone not just a couple races. This day and age where people have safe spaces and beds at work / school to go lay down cause it’s just to hard. Where’s there’s 54 different genders. But also agree Don needed to retire he made no sense rambling on about different topics. But this one topic definitely shouldn’t be why he got fired.

I think he could have gotten away with it if all he said was “you people” but he added in the “that come here”, clearly targeting immigrants. Now I can’t say for certain that he was targeting a particular race so he could have been lumping all immigrants together but when you’re an old white guy, people are automatically going to assume the worst.

What about Hailey Wickinhieser as a replacement? I like hailey as a broadcaster, but think an ex coach / gm would be better suited for coaches corner.

I am an immigrant and I wasn't insulted by his remark. AT ALL!! It actually made me think about what he said and I can only agree.

You need somebody opinionated but also intelligent who can talk about today’s hockey. Obviously they won’t mind somebody a bit controversial as long as it’s not racist or xenophobic. Cherry has been way over his skis in this aspect and can’t really discuss intelligently today’s hockey.

I think controversial is OK, but whoever gets the gig, it needs to be made clear from the get-go that they are not to stray from the hockey universe ... not the place for right (or left) wing political rants about topics that divide and have nothing to do with hockey. Immigration, gay rights, abortion, religion, etc. all need to be off limits regardless of the views expressed.

What's everyone's take on Ron MacLean's actions ?.....Words ? I can see why he wouldn’t speak up in the moment, I assume he didn’t know what was being said and it’s an awkward/difficult moment to speak up in when on air, with a colleague and I assume friend of roughly 30 years. I’m not sure what Ron could have done differently in that moment, it feels like one of those things that you may not realize how bad it sounded in the moment but once it’s over and you can analyze it, you realize how differently you could have handled it. I don’t like him back tracking though and essentially firing a friend under the bus the next day to save his job/take the heat off of himself. I have no issues with an apology but it felt very forced and almost cowardly, to throw a friend under the bus like that when you do it. This whole thing really should fall on Rogers and CBC as well. Cherry is on a 7 second delay, which like Ron Maclean probably was not enough to digest what he said and deem it too offensive for the air. But this session is not live for most of us ... its recorded and broadcast 2 or 3 times as other games have the 1st period come to an end. I agree on your comments on Ron Maclean ... Cherry made Ron famous and Ron threw him under the bus. I don't blame Ron for not speaking up in the moment ... nor even for his thumbs up as it took time to digest it all. But I guess you have to ask how he could have apologized without throwing Cherry under the bus.

Feel the level of outrage is a little over the top. Wish Don would have picked better words and targeting "all" Canadians. I think we all knew his career would end. I'm wondering if the Coach's Corner segment dies with the firing of Don? I just can't see somebody coming in and replacing him in that role. I have only watched Coaches Corner a few times in the last 10 years and could tell age was catching up to him on certain nights. It is sad to see him go though, as Coach's Corner was a staple for so many families, pre-internet. Love him or hate him, he could really hold an audience. I don't think people ever watched to get some amazing knowledgeable hockey insight, but he was great entertainment.

How about a summary ... I don't have time to listen to 22 minutes of bad music for the clips of what you want me to hear. I got 2 mins in and tapped out. Didn't even bother with the Ferraro piece.

I think it ends .......it what happens with Ron MacLean that has me curious . on day one when Roger's bought the rights they kept Don and Ron just to win over people in the transition. Roger's already had some hockey before they made the big move but were interested in owning all the names for their big deal. They had grandiose plans but did not have Ron Maclean as host at first and created hometown hockey for him. When they failed (or Strombolopolus) did not catch fire on the main Saturday HNIC broadcast they still had MacLean and used him again as a host. The real question is what is MacLeans real value in the billions of dollars they have tied up in this. What their biggest mistake was from the start was having like 12 guys involved in hosting their coverage until they whittled down to what Saturday Night is now. I think that Roger's expected that by this time they could have swayed some more strong Canadian name hosts. But they were never able to pry guys away from TSN that they want most like Bob MacKenzie who just signed his sunset deal to retire af Bell Media. I dont think they ever expected Ron and Don to still be going this long. It doesnt kink their plans terminating Cherry and they must have some plan in place for post-MacLean. It likely involves making Tara Sloane the main host.
