It's striking looking at guys that were regulars now being scratches and taxi squad with added depth...
Mete spent parts of the last 2 years top 4 and top 6...he is now 7th after adding Edmundson and Romanov.
Guys like Ouellet Lindgren Petry Frolik are all out of the lineup. Byron and Lehkonen from 3rd line to 4th with Anderson and Toffoli coming in.

I liked the game last night overall, a few too many penalties against a team with a stacked PP. They have the size and depth to be a lot better defensively. That part will take 6-10 games with no camp. the Suzuki line looked excellent.

Anderson doubled his goal scoring totals from last season already! Good ! .............Now Trade him Back to Columbus for PLD ...... no thanks however if they'd entertain Drouin i'd do it the game last night was a fun watch...... not terrific games for the D or Price but Anderson and Suzuki looked awesome... Kotkaniemi was meh again after a good post season.... fourth line is a strength finally.... i like Toffoli but he is very slow which doesn't fit in well with the rest of the team.... good debut for Romanov i thought Danault in OT was painful to watch...................

I know it's only 2 games, but so far I like how the Habs have looked, especially on offence and on the forecheck.
Due to no preseason, the first 10-14 days will be about getting guys in game shape and sharpen systems and tweaks.

Thornton at this point is a 4th line guy on a contender, not a core guy, same for Simmonds. Bogosian is a 3rd pair guy who needs insulated minutes. Thornton was signed to the league minimum to play on the 4th line for Toronto. You're basically arguing that Toronto IS a contender with this as those players were all signed to play those roles or at best be in the mix with several others including recent high picks for slightly higher roles (4th D vs 5th, 3rd line RW vs 4th, etc) I think how the division goes all depends on health. A team loses 3-4 key guys for a homestand and that's the difference between top 2 in the division and bottom 2 in my opinion because all the teams have huge flaws and only 1 is really a clear tier below the rest. Montreal lacks the high end offense and offensive game breakers Toronto has. Toronto lacks the defensive structure and game breakers in that area that Montreal has. Ottawa has a ton of high end youth and are probably the weakest. Out west they're all close and outside Winnipeg are all basically hoping their goalie situations pan out. Winnipeg doesn't have the D depth it did a couple years back but they can score and have goaltending. Calgary has a new goalie but they also have depth issues. Vancouver has high end youth but is banking on a new goalie tandem. Edmonton has the best 2 players in the league and the worst group of bottom end guys. There's no perfect team in Canada. Should make for a wild ride. Toronto has Thornton on the 1st line.

But also mixing in Hyman in there by the 3rd in all 3 games. It's still a training camp roster basically. By game 10 or so i'd say he's settled in on the 4th line and some PP. He doesn't have the legs to play 5 on 5 in a top 6 for anyone all season imo.

It's a no brainer to do if you can do it without giving up Suzuki or Romanov if either of those two are a requirement from Columbus i say no thank you

That means missing 6-7-8 games for players on both sides in a 56 game season.

You're acquiring a Dubois for the next 10 years. The next 2 weeks don't mean much with that perspective. If that means you ride with a little less depth for 2 weeks...so be it. Taxi squads mean you'll at least have bodies at your disposal.
