I guess with the fact this is the first thread about this year Raptors there’s really no interest in them. Hopefully there’s some because I’m going to try and start a thread.
I’ll be honest I’d rather watch Basketball then hockey any day. So I watch the Raptors as much as I can. Admittedly I usually only watch the first half because I can stay up to see the whole game. This team is fun to watch though. The way they started the year going 2-8 was IMO what I expected, and truthfully wanted. I’ll get this part out of the way now I want them to trade Kyle. A bad year, away from Toronto it might have been easier to do with less back lash. Problem now is they went from 2nd last in the conference to 4th best in a months time.
The East is so bad this year I was hoping upper management would go you know what? No one in the stands. Not in Toronto. Not signing Giannis now. Maybe let’s retool. IMO they have a solid 3 in Siakam, VanVleet, and Anunoby. Chris Boucher is great bench player and I also like what I see from Malachi Flynn. That being said next year’s roster is looking at some big holes. The way the Raptors have learned to develop their young players I was hoping they would get a lottery pick this year. I don’t see that happening now. Also they only have one pick this year. Key trading Kyle for another pick.
Here’s what I was hoping would happen Norm would have a good season and a team would want him. They might be able to get an expiring contract and draft pick. Then trade Kyle for contract matching with a young player and a draft 1st rounder in the package. The Norm pick can be next year or this year but Kyle needs to be this year. Looking at draft ranking and I know you shouldn’t draft for need but they need a centre. The guy I want them to draft is Luca Garza. He is Marc Gasol but better shooting skills. Surprisingly he’s rated very late in the draft. Probably because of his age. So if Kyle go to a contender that pick will be a late 1st anyways. With the Raps 1st rounder which is probably going to be around 20 mark take the best SF/PF available. This team needs rebounding badly. They need it now and in the future.
Which brings us to the current team. I will say this and believe it fully. This team brings back Ibaka for this season they are first or second in this conference right now. That was what was missing at the beginning of the year. IMO Nick Nurse is the best coach in the league because of how he got this team to adapt. This team goes and grab a good centre doesn’t have to be great just better then Banes (he’s garbage). Who that is IDK but it doesn’t have to be Drummond. I would like Drummond on this team just he’d cost to much.
I usually say in this case I wouldn’t want to make the decisions this team is going to have to soon but I would love to make the calls. I would still trade Kyle. Get a pick and a young promising player too. Then look for a centre up grade. That’s just me.

They seem to be one impact player and a couple of bench guys from contending for a title. Unfortunately in the NBA, stars pick where they want to go unless you draft them.
That being said they have the best coach and GM in their history and some good young guys to build with, I will give them a couple of years to see if they can find a couple more pieces to make a run. I agree on Lowry, but unless they can get a big return, they likely won't move him because of what he brings in terms of intangibles, showing young guys how to be a pro and compete.

I went on a rant in my first post and didn’t feel like going back and double checking this but it might have come across as I don’t like Kyle. Not the case I think he’s the best Raptor of all time. His jersey better be the first one ever retired. Saying all that I just think it makes sense to trade him. The biggest problem is his contract though. I just think a young player and the first round pick might come in handy if say another Kawhi situation comes up. A big name guy needs a new team and Raptors that player puts them over the top. They also then have the ammo to get a deal done.

I think there may be a team that needs that type of player, who brings those intangibles and gets them over the hump. You do that if you get a really good return, bot just a salary dump.

The trade deadline came and went and Kyle never got moved. They did however move Norm for a good return. Overall I like they job Masai and Webster did a great job. They added two 2nd round pick and two players while moving out 3 guys. Norm was the only one who was a key player on the team but they had to do it. He has played himself out of the Raptors price range. Rodney Hood and Gary Trent Jr are two players that won’t break the bank. Hood is signed to 10 mil next year that is a team option. Trent however is a Restricted free agent. So the Raptors can match any offer he gets and he won’t get more than 5 per year. I can see him getting a 3yr 15 million dollar contract.
Keeping Kyle becomes very interesting. It allows them to sign him back on a discount to the cap. I can’t fully explain it properly but I give the Cliff Notes Version. He is what they call Brids-rights player. The team who holds the player entering free agency can sign the player back and only a percentage of the contract goes against the cap. At 35 I think unless Kyle wants to play for another Championship will get the most money from the Raps because of this.
In saying all that that would mean this team might only have ball park 15 million in cap space next year. They really need to find a good centre. Doesn’t have to be great just good. Bayrns is shit and will be dropped at the end of the year which will save the team 7 million next year. Maybe they can bring in Canadian Kelly Olynyk. He would be a good fit on this team.
Now the team hasn’t played much better but I actually think they are in a better position for next year and possibly 2 years from now could be a big year for them. The first round pick is key. This years draft has basically a big 5. Number 1 rated guy is a franchise changing type guy, where as the other 4 are all guys who can become their respective teams best players in a few years. I think they could all be starts next year. It’s the players that are in the next 5 to 10 group that becomes to me a need player over BPA. I only say that because the PG rated here aren’t better then what the raps have already and the BPA isn’t drastically different here. Just saying player A is a PG but player is a PF and the project in between the two is they will both be starters but one will give you 10 rebounds and 3 assist where as the other is 10 Assist and 3 rebounds. The Raptors have 3 or 4 guys that give you the 10 assist they desperately neeeeeed the other. The 2 2nd round picks are huge IMO. They could both possibly be steals in this draft. Like I said in my first post one could be Garza. He would be a great fit for this team. From all the mock drafts there is out there, their is some great player going to be available when these 2nd rounders will be picked. The other bonus is cost certainty with these 3 new players.
What I’m getting to is next year when they are back in Toronto this team should make the playoffs and then the next year after they could be a team that might look to contend. Once again it depends on the first pick. I have a few names that if they don't get help from the lottery can and will help this team. Two names that I think fit really good are Moody and Jalen Johnson.

Gary Trent Jr is going to command 15+ million a year on his next contract... he’s already turned down a 4 year - 53 and change million dollar contract offer and he’s only gotten better since then. There’s no way the Raptors are going to get him for 5 million per season.

There was no actual contract talks, he said he’s going to free agency and doesn’t want to sign an extension.

The next date to look forward to is June 22. They have about 7.5% chance at the top pick. I hope and really want them to get the top pick. If they get the top pick they get right back into a top team in the east. Cade Cunningham is so good. I’m not saying he’s as good as Labrun but he would become the best Raptor easily. He is Luka Duncic skill with Freddy VanVleet demeanour. This guy on this team will be rookie of the year easily.

I think the Raptors have to deal with the Mesai issue first , then the Kyle issue......then worry about the Draft .

Have you watched him play? Next definitely the team to beat in the east is Brooklyn but all the other team you mentioned a starting roster of Fred, OG, Siakam with an added Cunningham they become very strong. They keep Birch as a backup centre and find a legit guy instead of Banes this team get home court first round next year. Birch, Flynn and Boucher makes a good foundation for the 2nd unit. Now that’s only if they get the 1st pick. They get top 4 however they still have a chance at a very good team. 5 to 10 they should still be a play of team but just a playoff team unless some big trades happen. You also bring up Kyle he’s good as gone. To much money to keep him so a sign and trade is the most likely out come. The assets from that plus depending on the draft lottery they have some interesting assets to trade for that legit big.

The Already Way too Early Mock Drafts have the Toronto Raptors who moved to Number 4 have them taking Jalen Suggs . Nice stroke of Luck for the Raptors as there is a consensus Top 4 , with Cunningham being #1 and Mobley , Green and Suggs all vying for the 2 Spot .

Nice to see Milwaukee Bucks win the NBA Title ......loved to see Giannis Antekumpo's response on Super Teams that LeBron James and Kevin Durant put together in Several Cities ......loved it .
