Playing the same teams 9 times in a season it's hard to win them all.
Ottawa is running 500 vs Toronto and Montreal but something like 4-15 against the other 4 teams.
The Leafs put themselves in a good spot but need to key in on the likely playoff opponents. They probably will play Montreal first. Their only focus should be on being prepared for that mentally. Toronto has that monkey on their back. If they dont come out of the North div in playoffs nobody will be talking about how they went 2-5 in early March.
Are they good enough to beat Montreal? Not just squeak by Montreal in 7 games. But the makd short work of them?
The caveat to this is now is point in schedule when it will become pretty clear that the Canadiens measure of success is going to be win 1 round nobody expects them to. So they have 6-7 weeks (provided they hold off Calgary) to playoff game plan pretty much 1 team (Leafs).
Back in the 80s this was the norm and why there were upsets in the division format. The top team has little measuring stick here to know if they are getting better or are ready. And you wont win every game.

TML is far from guaranteed to finish 1st, they were far ahead and now have lost 5 of 6. Wpg is 4 back with 3 games in hand. Edm is 4 back. Mtl is 9 back with 3 in hand. Heck even Cgy is only 11 back with 2 games in hand. Still a lot of games to be played.

Your most likely going to have to go through some combination of ........Winnipeg , Edmonton and Calgary . Does Home Ice really mean anything this Year ?

Great comeback by the Leafs last night to win 4-3 in OT. Galchenyuk with 2 assists and who else but Matthews with the OT winner

And they just keep winning lately - Matthews with his 26th & 27th last night. Tavares registers his 800th career point. Jack Campbell ties franchise record with his 9th straight win. Next game is against the Habs tomorrow night.

I like the Riley Nash pickup ... could be a solid depth guy for the playoffs, and because he is hurt now, he is a freebie against the cap. My question is, what was the point in doing this for Columbus? Do they really need a 7th round pick? Why not wait until the last minute if nothing else to see if you can milk something a little better? Is it just a matter of getting out from having to pay his salary the rest of the year?

Next game is Monday against the Habs They should feast on that Defence ........Craig Button was calling them the Best Defence in Hockey at one time this Season , they look horrible right now . Petry is a Mess in his own end and Weber all of sudden has lost that next gear and is losing way too many battles . Was Chairiot that Valuable ? Up front now ....when I see Kotaniemini ....I think Brady Tkachuck .....When I see Suzuki .....I think ...PLD ....and when I see Drouin .....I think Bergevin ......and that makes me Sick to my Stomach .

Hate it when the Leafs lose to the Habs. Campbell's win streak stops at 11 and Matthews scored his 32nd. Next game is tonight against the Flames.

The top 4 is settled its just about whether its Tor vs Mon or Tor vs Win in round 1.
