This is a general response to social media and todays fans I know in the sports and entertainment world you want as much exposure as you can get for your product as that generates more money for everyone. But the price can be high for the mental and physical health of individuals. The constant need to get ratings, clicks, likes etc is a never ending chore. Social media is a cesspool of trolls and extreme unfiltered vitriol. Even watching traditional media last night and today they seem to be throwing players under the bus and taking the Leafs loss personally. It's a game. And I laugh when salary comes up as if giving someone more money makes them play better. It's a reward for generating money for the team in ticket sales, merchandise sales, tv revenue etc. I'm a Habs fan and I firmly believe the media in Quebec is a negative influence on players that may prevent the team from ever winning the Cup again. From guys saying no way in hell they want to play in that market to a guy like Druoin who wanted to play but couldn't carry the weight of a media and fanbase on his shoulders. Where is the downtime for players these days away from the game? The Leafs players cared last night. The shadows of the caps covering their eyes shielded the pain of the loss. The players have to be perfect, never respond to a fan and have thick skin. The disrespect being shown to NBA players with fans back in the buildings is another sign of fans thinking they are entitled to something that they are not. Social media is the actual degradation of our society as we know it. It has its values, but I think the negatives far out-weigh the positives. Does January 6 happen with no social media ? Does the cancel culture happen with no social media ? The entire platform has become "pretend outrage".

Has nothing to do with social media other then it tends to speed up the process. Righting wrongs...or evolving to realize things like past humor is no longer funny...isnt cancel culture necessarily. I'm more concerned with things like making sure the current generations learn about things like the Residential School system that my generation was never taught or explained 1 thing about then I am about a twitter witch hunt to remove a statue of some racist mayor/founder/whatever from 1803. Even watching some TV reruns from the 80's/90's with people mocking homosexuality or putting it down....removing that from current day isnt cancel culture. Its human decency evolving as we realize what is/is not acceptable.

For the most part it's for the good and doesn't harm anybody, obviously if it's folks coming together to have a coup like January 6th in the US or 9/11 or similar terror even...or to spread racism, it's a bad thing. Obviously with what we see in sports, the harassment can get over the top and spewing of hate. One positive is that once you say or post something on social media, you can't deny it like you can speaking in person.

One thing I find fascinating about social media is that someone into sports will post with the sole objective of putting down a person or group of people. You'll then see some of those same people promoting #bellletstalk. It's completely two-faced. Good-natured ribbing is part of sports and part of life. But many people take it way too far, and of course they can online because it is anonymous for the most part.
It would be interesting if, in order to create a major social media account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, that you had to connect it to an approved government issued ID number, so that you'd have to use your real name, and you could only have one account per person. It's a pipe dream, but if people couldn't hide behind personas online, it would at least help prevent some abuse. Honestly it seems like there are more safe guards in place to protect the people hurling the abuse online than there are for the people taking the abuse.

Pipe dream in 2021 but I wouldnt rule it out of being the normal in a few decades when people finally realize an open internet offers as much harm as good but you cut out 99% of the bad and only 5% of the good by making it less anonymous and doing as you claim with more of an opt in method to how we communicate and engage with each other. Mind you people on facebook have no issue being proudly ignorant. But the trolls with fake accounts pushing these agendas are responsible for most of the trolling we see. Especially on twitter where I would say close to 100% of accounts commenting on political items with a multiple string number at the end is a bot made to look as real as possible.

We are on social media right now and you are hiding behind a fake name, just like pretty much everybody else on here. My name really is Steve, and I have posted my full name on here on more than one occasion. People like to be able to hide from what they say. Until people attach their own name to what they have to say they are cowards. Stop hiding. Its maddening to listen to people blame a kid for a loss, or a Coach for his team's struggles, when they don't have the balls to put their own name to it. Its easy to take shots at people when you are cowardly hiding behind a fake name.

Things happen so much faster now because of social media. Good or bad.
It has replaced the traditional news cycle. By the time it's on 6 o'clock news I already have heard it and probably commented on it and read the counter opinion.
Before social media we had to wait for the newspaper or electronic media TV/radio.
The bad part of it is some people are gullible and too lazy to discern fact from fiction and some groups can take advantage of that.
I think social media also keeps issues alive that would otherwise die in traditional media if not pushed by social media.
In my opinion for me access to info is important. But I try to responsibly use and responsibly repeat that info. All info is not for everyone.

Seriously though...anyone can put a common first name as a message board username but its still an anonymous handle lol Reality is that we probably know enough of the same posters that if we really wanted to know who we were...we'd just find out. So for some of us...even using anonymous handles...we know its not quite that anonymous. And the news cycle is changing to more local interest stuff vs reporting news I find because of that cycle. Better chance of Steve Murphy telling you about a crossing guard helping ducks cross the street then there is going to be a story about most local crime. But court happens everyday and there's some chaos on a daily basis lol. But chances are by 6pm you know the 10am court/local news happenings. And have more info then the CTV reporters who need to fact check, interview, edit, and be ready all before 6pm.
