Chris Johnston @reporterchris Morgan Rielly signs an eight-year extension with the #leafs carrying a $7.5M AAV. Rielly came in cheaper than I thought considering what a lot of D have signed for recently. It does make Toronto's cap tat much more top heavy starting in 22-23. Thats a solid deal right now considering what some others have signed for. The last 2-3 years it wont be...but by then the cap is increased you would have to think and the AAV is a lower %. I fully expected the aav to start with an 8. A bit of a hometown discount there I think. It all comes down to what you think Reilly is, or more importantly, will be over the term of that contract. If he ends up being good enough to be your #1 d-man, on a team hoping to contend for the Stanley Cup, then it is a good contract. If he proves to be less than that, it just becomes another strain on your cap situation.

Injury could always derail that of course. One thing thats for sure is to replace him in July would have taken other assets and there would have been a premium paid in assets or salary. Or both.

I'm almost convinced the only way they get around any issues with the big 5 is to move Matthews. Marner and Tavares are going nowhere. And no...I dont think they should move Matthews. Just thinking that among those top salaries the easiest way to relieve pressure would be to move the bigger deal on the shortest term.

Crickets from the peanut gallery after winning streaks.
Sky is falling and everyone and everything is a failure after a couple losses.

Crickets from the peanut gallery after winning streaks. Sky is falling and everyone and everything is a failure after a couple losses. Ok I'll bite... Not a big surprise that Matthews and Marner started scoring, it was going to happen. I'm sure Toronto will make the playoffs, having a top heavy roster is not a big issue during the season, it's at playoff time where teams can shut down your top guys and you need 3 or 4 lines that can score.

So we completely discount this 1 teams regular season and all personal success to anticipate their Spring failure? But not any other team that hasn't or has never won including all those who keep going through rebuilds and playing in front of no fans or do we just discount everything Toronto does until they win a 4th playoff game some year? This entire narrative of "of course that team I constantly shit on is doing well with its good players producing but failure is still right around the corner." is just so childish.

But like I said before...will continue this discussion...but never once say the players are producing and doing well in a genuine manner. Always this back handed "of course they score but..." narrative that only exists for Toronto Maple Leafs to these people.

Not sure on which planet you think using the same strategy every season and hoping for different results is a great strategy. I apologize for being childish and bringing facts to your dream world.

Nobody said that. You're drawing that conclusion yourself. Should I sit here and demand the team trade its top players? I just dont know what you expect fans to do. Should I shut them out and not watch or cheer or follow them until I think they have a better balance on their salary cap? Should I petition they trade Matthews or Marner? I sat through a talentless and directionless 15 years or so. I have no issue watching a young core go through growing pains. Especially with players like Matthews and Marner. But i'm not here defending everything Dubas. I'm saying you simply cant acknowledge when they do well and constantly need to use backhanded compliments to say ANYTHING not repulsive about this team. All I said here was your narrative is childish. Which it is. You dont frequent the Ottawa thread and talk about how they've never won a thing and are constantly rebuilding and progress in their eyes is not being a bottom 5 NHL team. You only save the absolute harshest reality for certain teams...always the rivals of your own. If there was a Boston thread here you'd be doing the same thing in there. Always and only harping on the negatives while completely ignoring any positive signs. It is childish...whether you actually want to admit it or not. But you think I troll in the Habs thread so reality hasn't been anything you've been involved in for a long time now.

I will acknowledge that they are a very good regular season team and they have star players that can put up a pile of points. That gets them in the playoffs. They added more solid 2 way defenseman instead of having 4 offensive guys. Matthews is probably the best shooter in the NHL and Marner is one of the best playmakers. Does that make you happy?

Does it not prove how childish you are that you think speaking basic facts is some kind of chink in your armour as a fan of another team? Just stop the act, man. Thats all people have been asking for years. Its not tongue in cheek or playful when its ALL YOU DO. You can be constructive with criticism until all you do it criticize. Thats what you do with rivals. And since its all you ever do even if you have a decent point its lost in the never ending negativity you show towards rivals. And no...we all don't do that.

(You dont prove it but go down another road) (I take the bait and go down that road) (You still havent proven the first point and now wont defend the 2nd) And /thread Just saved us all the time, Bill.
