Most of the off season moves have been made but if not a cheap addition on D would be Zdeno Chara
Yes he is slow but he keeps in great shape and would be a great mentor as a 5-6-7 Dman

They need players more then mentors at this point.
Spezza fills that mentor role. But a Chara who can barely handle playing on a 3rd pair isn't an answer. If he was still the top 4 Chara of 5 years ago...absolutely. But I think the Rielly's and Muzzin's are the leaders on the blueline and its time to see where the kids fit as its getting near time they produce or we move on and no better time to find that out then now when they've allowed Liljegren and Sandin to develop in the AHL.

Refreshing to see that "free speech" still carries some consequences when abused. Queue the cancel culture crowd crying that you can't just be a moron on social media without it effecting how people view you personally and professionally.

I'm all for free speech but homophobic, racist and discriminatory stuff should be out of bounds. For too long that stuff was socially acceptable. And now with social media the people who still think its funny or ok to voice those opinions seem to have no idea what personal or professional lines they are drawing with their "free speech". So they abuse all their rights and whine about what the consequences are of their behavior.

They keep reusing the same formula expecting different results.

This was posted when Lou was hired in Toronto...
It's quite relevant to their struggles.

Just throwing this out there. Not defending the Leafs mgmt decisions or Kyle Dubas.
Oldest team in NHL (avg age) ?? New York Islanders 29.65 years Lou Lamoriello
Toronto avg age is 27.20
The core players (Dubas group of 4) is well below the teams avg.
Generally in the NHL leadership comes from older players and teams do better as the prime core ages if they keep it together.
By comparison the Lightning have avg age of 28.5 and they maintained above 28 for the last 3 seasons. They were younger than Leafs current mix in 2016-17 and only a few ticks older 27.36 when they lost the ECF in 2018.
The Leafs are trying to become an elite playoff team. They have struggled to make that next step but then what team hasn't the first few times with core intact?
TB - a few hiccups COL - already going through it EDM - lol VGK - ??
It's a process. A word nobody wants to hear but it is. They may still fail. But they need to be the elite in their division. They aren't yet. They need to get above Bos, TB, FLA, and stay ahead of what is developing in Ottawa to get there. They need to go through those teams. Last year was not a normal season.
Note Florida is also a really good Eastern conference team and they are even younger than the Leafs. (26.88 avg age). These two teams will peak together. Similar core development.
Doesn't mean Dubas has a pulse on anything but teams that keep that core together eventually get there. Teams that obliterate the core and panic generally don't without some luck.

Toronto's issue is that they are stuck in terms of what they can do because of mostly the Tavares and Marner deals. Pittsburgh was top heavy in it's core but those guys led them Championships and the finals with multiple supporting casts and different styles. Toronto is pretty much stuck with who they have for a core and have no room to add much, I would say their depth has gone backwards in each of the last 2 or 3 years. Having to give Reilly 8-9M a year will make them even more top heavy. They have a 3 year window until Matthews is a UFA and can pick his destination, if they win maybe he stays, if they don't he likely leaves for a US market. Maybe there is a way to move Marner or Tavares, but their AAV will make it hard without taking 50 cents on the dollar or retaining 2-3M. The flat cap works against that.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris Morgan Rielly signs an eight-year extension with the #leafs carrying a $7.5M AAV.
Rielly came in cheaper than I thought considering what a lot of D have signed for recently. It does make Toronto's cap tat much more top heavy starting in 22-23.

Thats a solid deal right now considering what some others have signed for. The last 2-3 years it wont be...but by then the cap is increased you would have to think and the AAV is a lower %. I fully expected the aav to start with an 8. A bit of a hometown discount there I think.
