Won 2 out of 3 to start with 4 in the Bronx starting tonight. Lots of pop in the bats and some pitching nightmares in that opening series.
Hard to not be concerned that Ryu has simply lost his ability to pitch deep into games after last season. Hopefully he just needs to get stretched out a bit more but seeing him implode in the 4th wasn't shocking at all for me.

After watching Ryu's performances at the end of last season I was really wondering if he hasn't lost it. Maybe he is not a SP any more. I have a feeling he won't be in the starting rotation by the end of the season. A $20 million dollar reliever and he still has one more year on his contract I believe. Might not be a good situation.

Ryu looked pretty sharp for the first few innings. But yeah - even when he's on he gets hit now. I think the AL has figured him out a bit. At this point you have to believe that the 5th rotation spot down the stretch will be a battle between him and Kikuchi. They Jays may need to look at a big trade mid-season if neither can fill that void for a playoff run.

With Kikuchi's hard hit metrics, it would be surprising if he fares well in the AL east in smaller parks with tougher lineups(vs AL west). Both him and Ryu could be expensive middle relief guys by year end.

Fun game to watch last night. Vladdy's second HR especially impressive where Cole threw 2 seamer in on his hands and he was still able to barrel it and drive it out. then the next at bat he goes with an outside pitch the other way. Combine that with elite plate discipline and and improved conditioning, its hard not to start wondering what his ceiling could be.
Heck he is seemingly also playing plus defense at 1st base.

It is funny to look back on the boards from the Blue Jays threads from 2019, the amount of posts thinking Vladdy was overhyped after seeing him bat for a few weeks when he was only 20 years old in the Majors and that he'd be riddled with injuries because of the shape of his body.

To be fair...if he didn't make conditioning a priority over the last 2 off-seasons I bet a lot of those "he's going to have issues with injuries if he doesn't lose the weight" predictions would have come true. But thankfully he's taken it very seriously and the results are an MVP caliber season and this player looking like the best hitter in baseball. And not a bad 1st baseman, either. He had a very tough time with the whole eating right and exercising thing before he arrived in Toronto. The guy was 20 and still eating his grandmothers cooking and not exercising a whole lot and was very overweight for a pro ball player. If it wasn't corrected there's no way he would have reached his full potential, especially playing at Rogers Center. I honestly think making that adjustment when he did gives him an added 5-8 years in his prime.

He looked overrated until a year ago, his 2020 OPS was .791, his first 700 MLB AB's were pretty underwhelming for the hype he had.

Vladdy is simply unreal...
His defensive play on 1st base is also very solid.

Ryu struggling again. 5 runs scored against through 3 innings. And now reporting forearm soreness … imaging planned for tomorrow … queue a stint on the IL … very predictable. Whether he is hurt or not, will buy him some time to figure things out.

Whether he is hurt or not, will buy him some time to figure things out. Yeah in his first game he was getting batted around. He took a hit off his leg and took the opportunity to take himself out of the game. I was really suspicious at how fast he decided he was done.
