In my opinion the Eagles primary focus should be 2025. The Q host the Memorial Cup and Cape Breton as well as probably Chicoutimi should be bidding for that tournament. Chicoutimi currently have 4 1st round picks in this draft, as well as Bathurst's 2023 and 2024 1st. That's 8 1sts in the next three seasons. Some of those 1sts will probably go back at this draft for players, but those players could then be flipped for assets to be used in 2025. If Cape Breton wants to bid on that Memorial Cup, they need to focus on that year and not focus on squeaking out wins in years that honestly don't matter win/loss wise. If futures are coming from Saint John, take those players and flip them for assets that will help you down the road. Trade Langlois for a ransom at Christmas. Take advantage of your great Euro selection this year and probably next year, and get yourselves Euros that will be around in 2025. @leafs1967 : The positives are that Cape Breton can turn the page on recent mistakes and start fresh at the draft, and still have a contending team in 3 years. They can draft all kinds of young talent, and fans can watch them grow and develop on the way to a contending team. But none of that can happen if management decides to try and squeak out wins for short term gain. Eagles fans will come back if they see light at the end of the tunnel and have a process to get behind. If we use Eagle's management's logic, the division will be a lot easier next year with Charlottetown, Saint John and probably Bathurst selling off. Bathurst isn't a guarantee, we'll have to see how many of their good returnees are futures in deals they made this year. So the Eagles will get more wins next year even if the caliber of their team remains the same. But those teams that are selling off will stockpile a lot of picks and prospects, and Cape Breton runs the risk of being lapped if they decide to hold onto their players of value for the sake of next season. I agree, great post. You are bang on, 2025 has to be the goal. As much as it sucks, the 2021 draft was a bust, mainly because of where we picked, not just who we picked. The 2021 result was solid and now the 2022 is a must win draft, combined with a Langlois / Goalie move. If you look at the teams that nailed the 2021 crop, Halifax, Drummond, Gat, we were never in that race, so move on. We sit better vs last years draft then most teams and can add some nice prospects this year. Specifically, I feel we are ahead of Chicout based on last years crop, so we have a head start. Rimouski had a great draft last year, they could be in the mix for 2025 as well.

Good Luck to Jeremy Langois and FJ Buteau who are ranked 60th and 105th in NHL's Central Scouting Bureau's Final North American Rankings . I can definitely see The Contenders come with Offers in Hand for these two Next Christmas .

Just spit balling here...what if the 20 year old coming from St John is in fact J. Poirier with a plan to draft his younger brother Justin with their first pick. Would that be a stretch in the forward thinking of management? There is the risk that Jeremie moves on to Pro next season and there could be a condition set should this happen, but he would be one hell of an addition if plays in the Q as a 20.

I heard that someone is coming from Saint John that does have a J in his name... but not Poirier.

I personally can't see Poirier returning for a 20 YO season, likely makes the jump to the AHL

Well that will give us some much needed offence. At a high cost I am sure. Seems like a typical move of this franchise to follow up a last overall by paying a price for excellent overagers in a year that they won't contend. Unless its for a huge discount I don't think its a great idea to pay say Halifax's 1st rounder for a high scoring overager coming from a shitty culture in Saint John. I think you actually get more return on paying a mid round pick for a hard working heart and soul type of player when you have a young core. But when you need to constantly buy your leadership you're already doing a lot wrong.

SJ has 17 players that will be 20 next season, there is no way we can give up a 1st round pick for any of them. Huge mistake if this actually happens...I would keep Camp before moving a first.

How many players they have doesnt mean anything. This was a part of the deal at Christmas. We were never keeping that 2024 SJ 1st without added pieces to the deal and Lawrence for Halifax's 1st seems like a logic extension of that if you're SJ and just traded the farm and need to secure something to rebuild around. But its complete speculation on my part...I just think the pieces fit and can see our brain trust seeing zero issue moving 1sts for high scoring players because they actually think that will make fans come out and buy tickets even though fans are saying that the team being on the proper path means more then any short term fixes will in terms of their overall intersst.

With the rankings just coming out, goalie Gabriel D'Aigle is ranked #2. I wonder if the eagles will draft him #1. I personally think it would be a great pick. If they dont go the goalie route, i am hoping for poirrier or l'italien.
