The cap is going to start going up soon. Signing for 2yr/7 mil now could still open him up for a payday with a larger cap. Its only comparable year over year if there's no cap growth. Once the cap starts going up it absolutely would make sense for certain guys to take less for better opportunity vs the immediate pay day. Especially if they're in good health. That strategy works if you are 25, 26 or even as late as 29-30 but at 34, you can logically expect it to be your last big payday. If you are producing at 34 and keep producing for 2 seasons you'll get paid at 36. Kris Letang just got a 6 year deal at 36. This isn't someone needing to finally cash in. With a higher cap in 2 years if he's producing like he has he gets a high aav again in 2 years. Logically a Jack Campbell should be looking to cash in. A Claude Giroux should be looking to win.

anyone else think Toronto needs to move Muzzin? I think letting Sandin go is a bit of a mistake, I know he still needs time to develop but the potential is there, also if a team offersheets him for 4.2m or below they only have to pay a 2nd rounder.

don't get me wrong 7th is a good spot to pick but Debrincat is a young 40 goal scorer....crazy that Ottawa pulled this off and fits right with their current core.

Hopefully they can. Otherwise, at best, they only have him for 1 more year at a $9M cap hit and then he's a UFA.

They need to change their image a bit by convincing him to stay there long term or else they just wasted a top 10 pick during their rebuild. If they're shopping him in a year with a huge RFA number looming and UFA a year out...whats the point?

It's easy to say but agents and union are pushing guys to take maximize their deal. Of course they are. But its also silly to view 100% of free agents through that lense when we can sit here and name many players who didnt look to maximize their value in order to give their teams flexibility. Are we really going to sit here in a league where not 1 player gets paid max money and say a guy like Giroux shouldnt take say half the money for 2 years to have more fun and try to win? Can we view and discuss the human/professional element at all or just money? Until a McDavid or a Matthews demand they get their proper worth and the maximum contract an NHL team can give them as elite MVP's of the league can we really say the union just wants guys making as much as they can? Seems to me like NHL players actually give up money to stay where they are in most cases. Maybe Giroux has no interest in winning. I can actually respect that argument more than "his agent and PA want him to take the most from a crappy organization" as logic to not try and chase a ring while still producing good numbers. Obviously his agent would want him to max out his contract, but I don't think the PA will care that a 34 year old took a discount to sign with a contender. They are more concerned with the 23-27 year olds coming off their ELC or bridge deal getting the biggest contract possible.

I personally don’t see why it has to be Muzzin, Sandin hasn’t shown me enough to be getting more then Liljegren is. That’s the range he should be in, if he wants to play hard ball, maybe he can get more but the other side of the coin is that Matthews is soon a UFA. You don’t know whether he’s staying or not, you need to maximize your chances while you have that player… I think Muzzin gives you a better chance if you’re comparing player to player but I could be wrong.
