The Canadiens have acquired Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, Nathan Legare, and the Penguins' 2nd-round pick in 2025 in exchange for Mike Hoffman and Rem Pitlick. Petry at 25% retained(4.68M) is great value. They can keep him for a bit(TDL or next summer) or flip him elsewhere for assets, as Engels said, at 50% retained(2.34M) for 2 years, Petry would be a great add to a contender as a #3-4 guy. Even in a down year in Pit he put up 31 points in 61 games. The strange part of that trade is DeSmith, are they moving other goalies? Maybe Montemabult has value due to his 1M AAV price tag. Legare is a throw in, hasn't done much in two years AHL(35pts in 125 games), maybe a change of scenery helps him.

I would think that Montembeault is staying and that Allen , Primeau and Desmith will all be dangled out there to see what interest there is . Monty's performance at the World Championships has probably enhanced his Value within the Organization .

They will move one of
Allen DeSmith Monty
They "may" also lose Primeau via waiver..
Gives Hughes options.
Good to get rid of Hoffman and his $$

As Eric Engels mentioned, the talk is that Petry will/should be moved before opening night.
Good trade for Hughes.

Petry wanted out of Montreal to begin with..... unless he's divorced his wife can't see him being here opening night
adding another goalie also very strange
but the value of the deal was not retaining salary and dumping two pieces of garbage in Pitlick and Hoffman
more moves ahead for sure
also that could be one filthy PP in Pittsburgh this year

I still think Slafkovsky would be better served in playing a year AHL, at worse a half year. Let him play top 6 minutes without every error being scrutinized and earn his way up to the NHL. Last year he showed flashes but looked overmatched a lot and ended up getting hurt as a result. There are many older, more polished kids who can take those minutes.

They are definitely not done making moves, obviously.... There is talk that both Petry and DeSmith will be moved. I'm not sure who is looking for a back up, but he is a petty solid one. I would be ok with trading whichever of their 3 goalies have the most value.
