Arizona should be a successful NHL market, they have everything LV TB Dallas and others have but shitty ownership, not getting the right arena(politics?) and overall some bad teams for their time in the desert has killed them. LV showed up day 1 with a good team, building and owner and have had no issues in a smaller market. Vegas was always going to be a unique case. You can't compare the market to others in any way. Pointless to even discuss the overall size of the market. Vegas has like 25,000 people constantly coming and going who are all looking to spend money on entertainment. Any pro sport should flourish in that environment early on even if the team is more of a novelty. The fact they were better than good from day 1 was like strapping a rocket to the franchise. But its not fair to compare Arizona or anyone to them as a market. Especially when if not for the gambling aspect and how it was viewed in history up until like 5-10 years ago or so Vegas would have had pro teams 30 years ago.

You make a good point about LV, but if you put a shitty product on the ice the tourists spend their money elsewhere. Phoenix has a ton of tourists with money from Dec to April, snowbirds from out west(Canada and US) flock there but the product has been a clusterfuck for 20 years. Phoenix is similar to LA, a lot of rich people with money to spend but you need to give them a reason to spend, not going to a college arena.

Oh absolutely the product Vegas put on the ice attracted more people. I think that early demand would have been there anyway as they're putting on a show off the ice as much as they are on the ice. That demand meant more for scalpers for big games but I think they would have hit the ground running even without the team success. And I don't think anyone disagrees that Arizona takes on a lot of snowbirds. But retirees looking for arthritis relief are not exactly the key demographic for pro sports teams. I know a few people who head to Florida for the winter months and NHL hockey isn't even on the list of things they enjoy down there even though they've had at least 1 really good team in the state for a decade or so. And its also hockey in a non-traditional market. Goes way beyond how much money the market has. You need to bring them in the door and even a good team might not do it in that market. You need to get people hooked on the overall experience and have things off the ice and around the arena to create an experience. That's where that market screwed itself with the instability. There was never a chance to really create anything in terms of an off ice atmosphere.

There was never a chance to really create anything in terms of an off ice atmosphere. I think the single biggest thing (there are many ...) was they never got the arena right ... they started out sharing a building built for basketball with the Suns, then they ended up in what was otherwise an OK building in the wrong end of town (Glendale) that made it inconvenient for their fanbase (such as it was) to attend, and then obviously the Mullett which was a band aid solution. Not sure they have learned their lesson, as it appears that even the latest proposed arena is on land that is otherwise isolated from everything else and facing political opposition as to location. They need to be where the action is - close to existing hotels, restaurants, other entertainment options, in a building built for hockey.

With the sale official, the team will be in Utah next season.....with a plethora of draft picks.
I can't see how this is not a great move for the NHL.
Looking forward to seeing how this franchise takes off.
Would love to see them somehow purchase the Grizzlies name/logo/colors from the ECHL team.....but I know that wouldn't happen.

I was saying the same the other day, Utah Grizzlies is a cool name with lots of marketing potential.

My gut this year is Canucks-Bruins. Bruins b/c they were embarrassed last year. Usually expect redemption. Bruins modern era tend to make a kick at final about every 4-5 years.
The path for Canucks looks prettier than some others. And they have goaltending to do it.

*Old man rant incoming*
Who do I petition to in order to go back to the old school wear whites at home?
The older I get the more frustrated I get by white outs where the fans are all dressed in the color of the opposing team.
Winnipeg's fans are hardcore come playoff time. They will wear all wear pink if you asked them to do that so why not ditch the 1992 look (that has never actually led to any success) and try something that doesn't look and sound as stupid as a white out in a league where home teams weak dark colors?
*end old man rant*
