not that he'll end up back here or anything, but still interesting that they've decided to part ways. doesn't really say he was fired, but he and snow apparently couldn't get along. this still has all the makings of a firing though. www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spisles0715,0,3241479.story i'm a little surprised at this, as i thought he and charles wang had a pretty good relationship and he worked wonders with a pretty dismal isles team. seems like he wanted to win now and management was committed to a rebuild. butting heads with management like that can usually only cause problems. lots of coaching vacancies in the NHL this off season though so i'm sure he'll find another head coach job... if he wants it.

I'm not really all that surprised.
Nolan has a reputation for being a good coach but he also has a reputation for wanting to be in control and can be confrontaltional.
I think he did a good job with the limited talent he had in New York but the stunt he pulled with Depietro was the breaking point. Coaches are moved much easier than 15 yr contract players or GM's.
To be honest I think Nolan would be best suited back in the CHL in a role like he had in Moncton where he fills the role of both coach and GM. He would do a great job in that position but I would be surprised if any NHL teams line up to hire him.

He'll have work again soon if he plays his card(s) right.

The Islanders might be the only team worst run than Toronto...Nolan is probably better off out of there.

Bet you Garth Snow doesn't show his face in Moncton this fall during the Isles camp ... he would get booed out of the building ...

The Islanders might be the only team worst run than Toronto...Nolan is probably better off out of there. I would agree with that. But the fact that they aren't a "preferred coaching" location is a big reason why he was given an oppotunity in the first place. A big part of how quickly or "if" he gets another opportunity depends on how much his firing was based on the Islanders wanting to go in a different direction or if Nolan was simply too difficult to work with. Unfortunately for Nolan, with the result he squeezed out of that team his firing is more likely the result of the fact that Snow couldn't work with Nolan anymore because he is a good coach.

"Philosophical differences" Makes it sound like they were disputing the works of Nitchze over brie and a game of backgammon.

"Philosophical differences" I like that one.....I wasn't sure if the Islanders had a philosophy the way they ran their draft, especially in the first round.

I wonder if its similar reasons that made Flynn come back to Moncton. I remember Flynn talking about liking the part of putting his own touch on teams he coaches.

The funny thing is that Toronto currently has an opening at the GM level and with that he could make himself the coach...
