Sad day when a kid seems to be too old at the age of 18 to be making a team? Is it rare for 18 year olds to make a Q team? A player who is 18 is not "too old" but you have to able to contribute right away and be noticeably better than a 17 year old who plays the same role. For example an 18 year old Fortune needs to be better than a 17 year old Noseworthy is there is only 1 spot available.

I thought Malotkow was deemed to be OHL property and therfore, could not attend Wildcats training camp?

Flynn quote taken from the TT: -"We secured Molotkow's release from Brampton (of the Ontario Hockey League). He was regarded as a hard-nosed, physical type of player in midget AAA. We'll see how that translates into junior hockey.''

Malotkow has been in Brampton's camp but must have been cut and given the chance to come to Moncton. A check of Brampton's drfat choices over the last few years doesn't show him being selected ... unless he was drafted by somebody else and involved in a trade. Malotkow is a big kid ... 6'3" 220ish ... not sure if he is a tough guy ... played for the GTHL champion Vaughn Kings MAAA last year. Only posted 61 PIM's in 38 games, but not a whole lot of fighting goes on in MAAA. Stats are here ... www.vaughankingsmidgets.com/teamstats.htm

Sad day when a kid seems to be too old at the age of 18 to be making a team? Is it rare for 18 year olds to make a Q team? Not rare at all ... it just depends on what stage of building a team is in. A team that spends all its assets in a go for it year will often add 18 YO FA's the following year to fill holes with very few drafted players coming in. Querry's problem is that he isn't better than many of the 16, 17 YO forwards ... he isn't worse ... but those kids can give the team an additional year or two of service. So it's just wiser to invest icetime in the younger kids for the long term development of the team. Querry has to really make himself noticeable out there ... with big hits ... creating offense ... nifty moves ... gritty play .... blocking shots ... dropping the gloves (and actually being able to fight) ... but Querry just isn't doing any of that and so he is just blending in rather than standing out. He has had a decent camp ... did nothing wrong ... just hasn't stood out. Querry might have a had a better chance of making teams like Bathurst and Halifax, teams that lost several forwards from last year and have holes to fill.

Here is how I think it will ploay out...
GOALIES Nicola Riopel- 19 Louis Domingue- 16 Wendell Vye- 18
I think LBD stays as #2 and Vye gets the call if Rio gets hurt or is away at an NHL camp.
DEFENCEMEN Mark Barberio- 18 Matt Boyle- 19 Paul Dimitruk- 18 Patrick Downe- 16 Brandon Gormley- 16 Simon Jodoin- 18 David Savard- 18 Jeff Bell- 17
I think the first 7 are locks, Bell gets cut as soon as Barberio is back from TB camp. Downe may get sent down to MAAA once/if Voynov gets here. FORWARDS Jesse Biduke- 20 Zach Sill- 20 Matt Eagles- 20 Scott Brannon- 19 Randy Cameron- 19 Matt Brown- 17 Pierre-Marc Lessard- 19 Devon MacAusland- 17 Alexander Fomin- 18 Matthew Bissonnette- 16 Andrew Roski- 17 Jordan Lane- 19 Daniel Pettersson- 18
Matthew Milson- 18 Sash Molotkov- 18 Tyler Noseworthy- 17 Michael Querry- 18 Ted Stephens- 18 Julien Tremblay- 16 Ryan Fortune- 18
I think the bottom 7 battle for 2 spots, roster gets cut to 14 at midseason, if Molotkov is the real deal in terms of fighting and he is is a better player than Lane, maybe Lane is let go. I think Milson Querry and Fortune are the next round of cuts and Stevens is on the bubble.

Daniel Pettersson- 18 Matthew Milson- 18 Sash Molotkov- 18 Tyler Noseworthy- 17 Michael Querry- 18 Ted Stephens- 18 Julien Tremblay- 16 Ryan Fortune- 18 I think the bottom 7 battle for 2 spots, roster gets cut to 14 at midseason, if Molotkov is the real deal in terms of fighting and he is is a better player than Lane, maybe Lane is let go. I think Milson Querry and Fortune are the next round of cuts and Stevens is on the bubble. I'm not sold on Petterson yet ... didn't impress me last night at all. I know he has signed a card but that doesn't mean he still can't be cut ... he may have simply been a kid that was going to go home and Flynn signed him to get a longer look ... so now he stays on our protected list if he is cut. Fortune is a real big kid but doesn't skate all that well ... wearing 32 last night reminded me a lot of Herr. He has to use his size more to make a difference ... maybe even drop the gloves. If he doesn't show anything new over the next few games ... he will be gone ... if he isn't gone already. Querry isn't standing out as I have said earlier ... at 18 thats not good enough. Tremblay ... hmmmmm ... he impressed me last night more than he did in games he scored in. He will get a longer look. Tremblay is a 17 YO though ... not 16 ... at least by Jr age that is. Milson ... has impressed more than Querry has ... but not a big kid. He has decent quickness and defensive awareness ... did a good job on PK last night. Longer look but it will be tough for him at 18. Tyler Noseworthy ... I had bigger expectations from him but not sure why ... he is a 6th rounder. They can send him to Jr A and perhaps be a callup through the year if needed. Sasha Malotkow ... still to be seen. Might bump Lane if he is capable and a year younger. At 6'3" he is probably not so awkward looking. Sort of the same size as Marshall Worden we saw the other night with Bathurst. Ted Stephens ... ahead of all 18 YO players on the list by the fact he is the "incumbent" and a Flynn project. But I agree that he needs to do a little more and stand out ... show everybody he is a returning player. Show everybody that those offensive skills that we think are bubbling under the surface are really there. The biggest problem for everybody on that list with the exception of Noseworthy is that Tremblay is 17 and is as good or better than everybody on the list. That makes it a no-brainer call if there is only one spot ... you take the 17 YO ahead of the 18 YO with equal skill. Noseworthy's problem is that he isn't as good as Tremblay ... even though we took him in the 6th and Tremblay in the 8th. You can teach defense but tough to teach offense. If there is just one more spot up for grabs ... I'd cut Petterson (making two spots) ... and keep Tremblay and Stephens.

The thing I really liked about Petterson is that he skates really well and anticipates the play. I think he can be a very good PK guy. He reminds me a lot of Salvis, good skater, smart player, only average hands but hard worker. I thought he was miles ahead of Fortune and Milson and a notch better than Querry...I think what they see in Querry is the future replacement for Sill as the "shutdown" center, he is always in good defensive position and plays a smart game while still having decent offense but Petterson's skates better than him and is the same age.
Tremblay is impressive from the blueline in, but from the blueline out he struggles. He is not physical or defensively aware and he is not strong on the puck like Marchand was. Most of the other guys are more physical and can contribute defensively and on PK.
If I was to rank them right now...
1-Julien Tremblay- 17 a guy with offensive upside and a team searching for offense 2-Tyler Noseworthy- 17 adds energy and a physical element 3-Michael Querry- 18 he is strong defensively and still can chip in some offense 4-Sash Molotkov- 18 unknown, this helps and hurts him 5-Ted Stephens- 18 he needs to start doing something, he is not physical and not generating any offense 6-Matthew Milson- 18 7-Ryan Fortune- 18

I think after last year and with Morehouse gone we need a a few more physical players. Noseworthy would fit that spot....But we also could not put the puck in the net...So they have a tough call to make....Hopefully Sash Molotkov might also fit that spot...But he has time against him..
