I was wondering for the last little while why the Wildcats did select an 18 years old player that might or might not be in Moncton instead of a top 17 yr old prospect that would be almost guarenteed to be here 3 years since he cannot go to AHL.
I understand that they went with the best player available but is it really worth the risk ? If Voynov comes to Moncton he might even play only one year and then he will have no trade value if not traded at Xmas.
So the question, is it really worth the risk of losing a 5 th overall pick for nothing ?

I was kinda hoping they'd pick a forward with 5th pick. Hoping a 17 yr old as well. If Voynov comes it'll be strictly for this year and Cats will be going for it in 09/10. So if he doesn't show up at all, will look bad in my opinion. I won't be shocked if doesn't come.

My guess is the Cats got a verbal commitment from the LA Kings that if he does not make the NHL team he will be sent here.

We don't have to worry about the Kings sending him here yet.
The KHL (Russia) is trying to block him from coming to the NHL period. They are saying his contract was automatically renewed at the end of last season.
He is part of the whole Radulov (Russia) vs NHL war going on. So the Kings and Wildcats may never even see him this year depending on the whole court thing goes. Sucks.

The KHL furthermore informed that the league is disputing the signings of the following players by the NHL:
Andrei Loktionov – signed by NHL club Los Angeles from KHL club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Vyacheslav Voinov – signed by NHL club Los Angeles from KHL club Traktor Chelyabinsk Andrei Mayorov – signed by NHL club Columbus from KHL club Ak Bars Kazan The meeting agreed that also these cases will be submitted to an applicable court or – if all included parties agree – to arbitration, whose verdict can not be overruled.

The old RSL contracts had to be renegotiated before some date in April, I forgot. If a player does not accept a new offer from the team, he can go to the KHL market and negotiate with other teams. If he gets an offer, and the old team matches it he has to accept the old teams offer. If none of that is done within 30 days or some thing like that, his old team has his rights. What this means for a player who bolts to the NHL, this is not clear cut. Clearly on the KHL market this diff is the same as that between "half full" and "half empty", and the NHL chooses to interpret it the suitable way.

SUCKS... It doesn't look good that you'll see him in a Wildcat Uniform.

Couldn't he play for the Wildcats while it goes to court? They are not professional. They could park him here while they settle it.

I wouldn't count on it. This is messy situation. I'm sure we will know what will happen in the next four weeks. I'm guessing he'll miss all of the Kings training camp because of this. I hope not.

Has the NHL said anything about it yet? Last I read, the KHL had suggested sending the Radulov matter to binding arbitration or court (presumably along with the junior signings they are opposed to) and the NHL had not responded - and they may well tell the Russians to go pound sand.

I don't think the Russians have any say in the matter, Voynov does not have a signed contract over there unlike Radulov, the decision will be LA's after rookie camp.

I read the same article you did - they can dispute it all they want, until they either get a judge or arbitrator with binding authority to agree with them, it doesn't amount to much - unless the NHL caves and reaches a deal with them to avoid court/arbitration ... I would suspect the players will be at their NHL camps absent further developments. Does anyone know if Radulov is playing in Russia while waiting for this to be settled, or is he sitting out?

I presume he'll play. He is allowed to play in international tournaments so there is no need to for him to sit anything out.
I still don't see Vyacheslav playing until he is given the NHL's blessing. We'll have to see what happens in court.
