Seen the first group tonight (left as the 2nd was coming on) and it felt great being back watching Rocket hockey.........despite being in Pownal.
One player that I was a little surprised with was Tanner Manson. For a big 16yr old, I was expecting him to be a bit on the clumsy side, but he seemed to be able to skate fairly well.
Kana (who i think was Kana) was their and is built pretty solid.
Two games tomorrow...........9am and 5PM I believe.

For me, as far as the new guys are concerned, I really liked the way Street was skating out there. Very smooth and fast.
Another player I was really impressed by, and who I don't know much about, was Kris Schmidt (he was on the second group, so those who left early wouldn't have seen him). From what I can tell from the Q site he played with Drummondville last season, and started with Bathurst. Strong skater with some really good hands. He'll challenge for one of the last roster spots.

Manson is a pretty good skater...in terms of actual hockey ability he is much better than both of his brothers RIGHT NOW. I think the main thing with him is that his skating is pretty good, which should allow him to play in the league eventually.

Three "outsiders" that caught my eye were Tanner Manson, Nathan Macquaid, and Mackenzie Koopmans. Manson had good feet and seemed like a solid player. MacQuaid was skating hard and has good agility. Koopmans is a monster. Huge guy with good skating and HARD hits. Nailed a guy 1 on 1 tonight. I think Koopmans should get s spot considering his performance tonight.

You're willing to give him a spot on the team based on one practice....?

They are cutting players after one or two practices. Plus I would imagine the Rocket have a good idea on who they want on the team and what kind of roles that they will have for them.

Rocket coach: Camp time for players to step up The Guardian
For P.E.I. Rocket head coach Yanick Jean, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League exhibition games are about showing him the money.
“It’s time for them to show what they have to show. You’re 16,17,18, 19, give everything that you’ve got. You don’t want to sit at home when you’re 23 or 24 years old saying, ‘OK, maybe I had a chance, I played a couple of exhibition games in the Q and maybe I should have worked a little harder and should have given more’,” Jean told The Guardian earlier this week.
Potential new members of the Rocket will get their chance to shine Sunday when P.E.I. faces the St. John’s Fog Devils in Summerside. Game time is 7 p.m.
Fledgling players at training camp in Pownal, which started Friday, include this year’s first-round draft selections Brandon MacLean and second-rounder Brandon Street. Lower round picks like Islanders Parker Deighan and Nathan DesRoches have a shot, too, said Jean.
And as proof, he pointed to Albany’s Greg Paynter, an undrafted invitee last year who stuck thanks to his hustle and gritty play, finishing with five points and 69 penalty minutes in 55 games.
“He came here and nobody expected him to make the squad. He said ‘you know what? I don’t care about who’s there or I don’t care about who’s not there, I’ll just give it all’,” said Jean. “He was good in every game that he played and every scrimmage. He was very consistent and we’re looking for consistency.”
At that, Jean reasons, comes from his coaching staff’s approach for Sunday — let the players play.
“We want to put the players out there to see what they got. If you scored 50 goals in midget AAA last year, you’re not going to sit there and wait for a PK (penalty kill) to go on the ice. I’ll put you on power play to see your strengths and show me the best you’ve got at this kind of game.”

A few notes about todays scrimmage. Morrison was a man among boys today. Looked very strong. Walker got off to a slow start but picked it up as the game went on. Latal....injured early on, not sure what the extent of the injury is.
Some other forwards that looked solid today:
Locke, Kana, MacLean, LaChaine, and Piche were solid.. Manson Street McIver and McKinley and coon-come had thier moments too. Cliche was a disappointment, Nathan McQuaid was not real impressive
On Defence: Southorn stood out. Clow, Malouin, Dieghan and Gervais were all very good. Lessard had a rough morning, but he was paired with Koopmans, who was awful. Owens struggled and I thought Swit and Main were average, while Wright was a step behind. Martel had a pretty good morning too.
LaFleur was clearly dominant in goal. Mosher had a bad day and is going to have to battle for a spot against the other goalies who held their own.

Southorn was quite strong today. He's bigger and faster this year. I can't wait to watch him develop this year.
