I'm not usually one to blame the coach, but I must agree that I don't feel very comfortable with how Jean's steering the team (the constant line juggling drives me nuts).
I'm curious though. If we did get rid of Jean, who would we go after to replace him? I've often wondered what this team would look like if 'ol Forbie was at the helm. Talking to any of the boys who've ever played for him, they all seem to respect him greatly. The fact that they have this mutual respect, he always seems to get the most from his players. If someone's not pulling their weight, regardless of their level of talent, they sit on the bench. You always know where you stand with him. I'm not saying that he's necessarily qualified or not qualified to coach in the QMJHL, but I'd bet he'd ice an entertaining and energy filled team. It would be nice to have some Island influence on the coaching staff again too.
I'm curious to hear other ideas or suggestions.

Forbes would not be an option.....on both sides. Maybe someone like Kenny MacDougall could be a candidate.

I wonder if Al McAdam would be interested in getting back into the coaching business. I think he did a good job in Halifax.

To add another layer to the problem... apparently the new asst coach isn't a well respected individual and coaching practices no better than Jean, in fact Jean is preferred... not good at all.

Jean was coaching for his job last night.....IMO, he needed that win.
"On paper" this team should have a chance to go deep into the playoffs, and being Jeans last year on his contract, if the team seems to struggle this season as in the past......I would expect to see Savard drop the axe......and fast.

I'm afraid that Jean, and Savard have got painted themselved into a bit of a corner. Yes, Jean does play a top six forward and top 4 defensemen relentlessly. But I think it is for two reasons:
1. Jean is in the last year of his contract. At this point it is unlikely that it will be or should be renewed. Knowing this, would it be better for jean to play the hell out of the top 6 forwards and top 4 defense to improve his regaular season record, for his resume, and sacrifice the playoffs, kowing his is not going to be back next year!
2. Savard has put extra pressure on the coaching staff and players to win, and win now because of lack of attendance, and visible signs that sponsorships are dwindling.

That is no excuse every coach has similar pressures. A coache's job is to best utilize the resources which are available (ie. players). And in Jr hockey that means two things. IMO the first is development of talent and the second is success. I have development of talent first because it breeds success especially since this isn't the NHL where you can't rely on adding top free agents (unless your in Moncton ;D). Personally I have never been a fan of Jean's style but I was willing to give him a chance to prove himself. Savard decided to take a young coach and hope to build a long-term relationship with him and the organization. IMO the first year was a disaster before Jean was even added. Also he was a young coach still learning himself and so I was willing to give him a little benefit of the doubt. Jean certainly made some mistakes but there would have been problems even without him. I personally gave him a pass on that year. Last season I still don't think he was much better. Many of those same mistakes were being made. It appeared however that this team turned the corner after Christmas where they were playing great hockey and all 4 lines were rolling but Jean reverted back to 6 forwards - 4 defense in the playoffs. As well IMO coaching was a big reason why we lost that close series as I completely disagreed with a lot of his choices like matching Walker-Latal-Morrion against Beauregard-Perreault and not playing our 3rd or 4th lines barely at all. To me it was last season's playoffs which put Jean's job on the line. Not because the Rocket lost but because of the way we lost. I still firmly believe that the Rocket were a better team than Bathurst and a combination of "ify" goaltending and coaching meant we lost it. This season Jean has to prove that he can get the most out of a team with talent but lots of coaches have that same pressure. Unfortunately for Jean the early results haven't looked good. The boys have come out with some poor efforts early, the PP doesn't look good and again I personally don't like the way Jean is managing his bench. I'm guessing that Jean has until about the end of October to show Savard that he can lead this team to a successful season if not by November/December the should be looking a new coach. And as much as I want to see this team win, maybe a couple of early losses wouldn't be so bad if resulted in a new coach and a better outlook for the second half. Now I don't want to sound like I am banging the drum to get rid of Jean, just sharing my opinion as I am quickly building my desire for a new coach as I am sure many others are as well.

The fact that he is coaching on the last year of his contract is a definite sign he is on thin ice, usually teams negotiate extensions if they really like the guy long term.

Just curious, but how many people have actually seen the coachs' contract, that says he is in his last year.

Just curious, but how many people have actually seen the coachs' contract, that says he is in his last year. Rhetorical question, and also irrelevant. 3 years is what we were told two years ago, via the press, and no one has denied it. Simple fact is, this coach has not got the best out of his lineup, and the team has looked disorganized, even at the best of times. End of story.

Contract situation ignored, it's hard to debate against the fact that it really looks like he coaches each game with the mentality that he needs it to keep his job. In Jean's up and down history on PEI, there has never been pressure on him like there is now. He's got a strong stable of top end forwards (Morrison has potential to be top 3 in scoring) and a 2nd round NHL draft goaltender. The team looked dismal starting out 0-2 and the defence completely broke down in period 3 on Saturday. Coaching is under the microscope, big time. cb Just curious, but how many people have actually seen the coachs' contract, that says he is in his last year.
