I was just looking through some statistics for some of our former players and saw that former PEI Rocket Deverick Ottereyes is playing in his 5th and final season of University hockey at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ont. It's great to see how he's been able to continue his career playing university hockey and has been able to work towards a university degree. For a kid from a very remote community in northern Quebec, hockey provided a great opportunity for him. It's great to see that he's having a successful run following his days playing junior hockey. www.eliteprospects.com/player/128186/deverick-ottereyesI particularly enjoy seeing what all of these kids are doing after leaving the Q ... education ... pro careers or domestic careers. Not just the kids that played for my team but all of the Q teams, but I am mostly familiar with the guys that played in the Maritime division.

Ottereyes was a Cree kid from the James Bay region. I forget the name of the two he was from, but it is way up North. In fact, I think it was actually closer for his family to drive across the interior of the province to Chicoutimi to watch him play than go drive down to Val-d’Or!
I hate to generalize, but his hockey probably had a huge impact on him being able to have the opportunity to go to university and get a degree.
And you have to give credit to him for sticking with hockey at the CIS level too. He wasn’t a star in our league. At 20 he dropped down to play Jr. A. There’s probably many hockey players better than himwho have quit university hockey along the way but he stuck with it.
Was it Keith Jones who always used to say that he made the NHL because all of the guys he played with who were better than him quit hockey and he was all that was left to call up?

He's from Waswanipi. It's about 4 hours northeast of Val-d'Or. I drive by there on my way to the Maritimes.

He was a great teammate and a very serviceable player for the Rocket.

Congratulations to former Islanders defenceman Nicolas Meloche on being called up to San Jose.
Hopefully we will see him make his NHL debut in the upcoming days.

Sprong has been traded to the Washington Capitals. I’m sure he won’t get a look on a strong Washington team. I know there is work ethic issues with Sprong, but I feel like there are probably ego, or personality issues as well.

Thinking this is the end of the line for Sprong......
He will likely be playing in Europe or maybe the KHL when his current contract expires.

Being on your 3rd NHL organization before your 23rd birthday cannot be a good thing. Sprong's progression is a little tougher to remember because in some ways he's been a something of a pro player for the last 5 seasons: -at 18 he made the Pens out of camp and played 18 NHL games before getting sent back to us at Christmas -at 19 he was hurt for the first half of the season and ended up playing with us from Christmas on -at 20 he was a pro player and spent the season with Pittsburgh's AHL team with a cup of coffee in the NHL -at 21 he was dealt from Pittsburgh to Anaheim mid-season and managed to score 14 goals in 47 games -at 22 (this season) he didn't make the Ducks out of camp and was dealt yesterday to Washington who will keep him in the AHL. He's on his second contract as a result of playing in the NHL past 9 games at 18, but he really just should be compared to a player on year 3 of his entry level deal. But most players who really get established with an NHL career need to show that they can be regular players by the end of their three year entry level deal. So yes, the writing is on the wall for Sprong to get going here. Chlapik is another guy that is at the end of his 3 year entry level deal. He's been up and down from the Sens farm team each of the last three years and hasn't been able to stick as an NHL regular....even on a team as bad as Ottawa. The next couple of months are going to be key months for him. This also kind of fits in to Nicolas Meloche getting called up by San Jose. He's on year 3 of his entry level deal and San Jose will have to decide if they should offer him a new deal or walk on from him. They probably want to get a look at him in NHL play to help the decision. Of course, this isn't always the way it goes. Look at how the progression went for Ryan Graves. Graves played out his entry level deal, mostly with the Rangers, who drafted him. They traded him to Colorado in year three and moved on from him. After his entry level deal, Colorado did resign him to a 1 year 2 way deal for 2018-19 where he split the season between the AHL and NHL. Following this for 2019-2020 he got another 1 year 2 way deal that he's playing on this year. It sure looks like Graves has established himself as an NHL player now. He'll definitely get a longer deal on a one way contract from the Avs this summer. Thinking this is the end of the line for Sprong...... He will likely be playing in Europe or maybe the KHL when his current contract expires.

Sprong is for sure on his last leg here. I dont see him going the Europe or KHL route. Washington give up Djoos for him, who to me has more value then Sprong. Washington is in a position to give him a shot in the AHL and see how it goes.
As for Chlapik, I watched an interview yesterday with Ottawa’s GM and he said they made a move to get a veteran forward for the remainder of the season so their young prospects can continue to win and play In the AHL playoffs. He mentioned 5-6 names of prospects they are very high an and Chlapik was not one of them.. time will tell for him as well.

I believe Chlapik will be in the line up tonight for Ottawa as Duclair is out with a foot injury.

Very good point on Chlapik. I understood Ottawa’s AHL team is very good and they feel they have a shot at the Calder Cup. It makes sense to have all their talented young players who are waiver exempt down in the minors. Sprong is for sure on his last leg here. I dont see him going the Europe or KHL route.
