With the draft upcoming (and the lottery this week), I thought I'd post some thoughts about the draft.
Note: a lot of what I've read on prospects comes from HockeyProspect, who make an excellent draft guide for the layperson for anyone interested in knowing more about the players.
If we win the lottery, the first pick right now would be Joshua Roy. He's an offensive dynamo who at 16 would likely play 3rd or 4th line for us (if Georgie gets everything he wants, our 4th line is going to have a couple of White/Plamondon/Jacob/MacIntosh/Clark/Belisle on it) with PP time. He tore up the Quebec midget league and could potentially have a Jacob Pelletier like influence on a team.
The second pick right now is Justin Robidas (yes, son of that Robidas). Justin could potentially challenge for 1st overall, but if we end up with the 2nd overall pick and Shawinigan isn't 1st, I fully expect Georgie to have a conditional trade offer very quickly after the draw (possibly even before getting out of the TVASports studio). He's a two-way player whose game is trending up. He will not be at the Gatorade challenge because Magog is in the Telus Cup (again).
I don't expect Peter Reynolds to come to the Q. If he does, he'd be the 3rd best player in the draft.
At 3rd overall, I'd expect Cameron Whynot to be the next player. He's a dynamic D who would make our D corps better. He would instantly join our top 5 on D (with Villeneuve, Poirier, DesRoches, and Sibley).
At 4 or 5, things start to open up a bit. Some names that could happen around this point are Zachary Bolduc, Zachary L'Heureux, Zachary Dean, though this is where the volativity really begins, because players like Tinling, MacDonald, Malatesta, and Nause could all make arguments to go a lot higher soon (amongst others). There is definitely a difference between picking top 3 and picking below that right now, but there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between 4 and 6 or 7.
After our first pick, I'd really like to see us get a later 1st round to take a flier on one of the many NCAA kids depending on who says that they would report (one of Reynolds, MacDonald, Huckins, Richard).
The second round will be interesting. This is where things really open up in terms of who can go where, but there are definitely some really good kids who could be available around our 2 picks like Kidney, Gaucher, Malatesta, and Mianscum.
My hope is BPA with every pick, and we can worry about how the heck these kids could fit into a lineup after.
