Updated 23-24 lineup Loshing(19)-Lounsbury(18)-Euro? Auger(19)-Trenholm(20)-Daniel(20) Smith(17)-Taibel(Euro-19)-Mercier(18) Mueller(18)-1st pick(VD)/McPhee(18)/Bishop(18)/Legare(17)/sampson(17) Morin(18)-Ballantyne(19) Plandowski(20)-Marcil(19) Grenier(18)-AFG(17) 1st rd pick(Mon) Filion(19)-Steinman(19) Should be a solid team that may threaten to be top 5-6. Upgrades needed to contend. Does a guy like Vsevelov komarov could fit into this lineup? Not anymore than Taibel, solid player but not an impact Euro.

Just a quick question, how did Halifax leap frog us in regards to the team development queue. Covid brought a screeching halt to the season when we had a powerhouse, the next year I believe Halifax was peaking until that season was derailed, how did Halifax get so far ahead of us this year?

Is Justin Dumais expected to go NCAA? I haven't seen much about him but noticed he had a better season with LSL than some of our guys picked in the earlier rounds. I was thinking the same thing. I started to follow him at the CCM Challenge back in December and he’s been one of the best forward of that league in the second half, especially in the playoff where he stood out. He’s definitely the kind of player we want to keep in that league to make our league deeper. I know that Halifax could probably use him with all their top forwards that they lose next year, that would make a great story in NS.

Halifax was 13th in the league the year after the season was halted. They really weren’t peaking at all but the answer is, they got L’Heureux in the Moncton trade and had other assets to rebuild in that next draft. They got extremely lucky getting Dumais at 18, Vidicek is another stud pick at 16 and Furlong in the 2nd round. Those 3 were all impact players at 17 and that’s extremely unlikely when you pick that late in the draft. Rousseau in the 4th round and then they double dip with 2 high level players in MacKinnon/Cataford to finish off that young core.

Halifax started the rebuild in 19-20 with a huge haul from the Cats for Groulx and McIsaac, they have been about 2 years ahead ever since. Cats best window is in 24-25 if they want to host.

So now that the off season has really started, what do the Cats have for next year? I think barring some huge additions, it will be hard to take a big step in the standings. If they are serious about hosting the MC in 2025, they need to be patient and keep their trade assets(2023 and 2024 picks) and play the kids next year. Shortcuts have not worked in the past for the WC.
Returning players
Goalies: Steinman(19) Filion(19)
You have to assume they bring in a younger partner for Steinman who might be #1 in 2 years. Maybe a team is interested in Filion based on high draft status, he hasn't really progressed in 3 years.
Defense: Morin(18) Plandowski(20) Ballentyne(19) Marcil(19) Grenier(18) Fortiner-Gendron(17)
Morin is a star already, the rest is not great, Grenier and AFG have upside though. The three veterans are placeholders, one or more I could see traded to make room for a younger D.
Forwards: Loshing(19) Trenholm(20) Daniel(20) Taibel(19) Euro Auger(19) Lounsbury(18) Mueller(19) Mercier(18) Smith(17) Bishop(18) McPhee(18)
The losses of Beaudoin Labelle and Barbashev are huge. Will need guys like Lounsbury Mercier Smith to take a big step forward. I expect a new Euro forward(17 or 18) to help up front. Sampson Legare and Deslauriers should battle for spots along with 2023 picks.
1st 1st(VD) 1st(She) 2nd 3rd 4th 5th(Chi) 6th 6th(Vic) 7th 7th(BC) 8th 8th(BBA) 9th 9th(Chi) 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th
Overall, as I said above, some good pieces, but a lot of patience will be needed unless they try and take shortcuts, which I'm not a fan of and has backfired in the past.

I actually think it is a pretty good returning group ... with natural progression alone, I think the team can be a bit better than it was this year ... and setting up for a run the following season. In net, I can see moving Fillion if the right opportunity comes along, and/or if the right young goalie is available at the draft or via trade. That said, I don't think it is the end of the world if you keep him into next season - at minimum he is a solid veteran backup, and then you look for a new backup in 2024-25, and eventually a new starter for a rebuilding team in 2025-26. Losing Labelle, Beaudoin and Barbashev hurts, but teams lose good players every year - it is the junior hockey way. The teams above us in the standings are generally losing even more, and even the teams below will be losing key pieces. I think guys like Lounsbury/Mercier/Smith/Auger all have the potential to make a leap offensively, and I think Trenholm and Daniel have the potential to grow from the solid two way guys they already are into a Beaudoin type role as an OA. Plus add in a new euro or two and a high draft pick. Wondering if Lacroix starts the season as coach? Honestly would not be shocked to see a press release announcing he has been relieved of his duties ...

Perhaps we get a Friday news dump with the farewell and lottery tonight and tomorrow.

Ideally we land 2 impact Euros. Also, I would expect the Top 3 pick to step in and be a contributor pretty quickly. That would take the sting out of losing the 3 guys

That would take the sting out of losing the 3 guys To put into context what an impact euro looks like ... Barbashev was 4th in euro scoring, Taibel was tied for 13th ... and both played good two way games. We would be doing very well if we manage to bring in two new guys who outproduce them next year.
