I'd be looking for a Euro goalie age 18 or 19. Maybe, if we can get really lucky, try to work out a deal with someone who is maybe NHL drafted next week but in a situation where they might not play a ton. If we draft a guy with the inside track on being able to be our starter, then there is opportunity for 18 y/o's Flanagan or Riff or 17 y/o Boudreau to emerge. And we can leave the 16 y/o's (Hickey, Carter, Bradley) to play in their developmental leagues. Did anyone see that Hickey was drafted in the MHL draft to Summerside. Depending on how things to at his QMJHL camp, there could be opportunity for him to play Jr. A at 16, and if he's ready for that, it would be fantastic for his development. The problem is that 16 year olds can't play outside of their home province for Jr A. Well that’s just not true.

Interesting add....
Of course, the CIHA program is where Guy worked prior to joining our organization.
One thing I was looking at regarding our lineup recently.....there is an imbalance of lefties and righties when you really drill down to the guys who have a serious shot at making our team.
Consider the following:
LHD
Marcus Kearsey (17) Carl-Etienne Michel (19) Lane Hinkley (19) Owen Conrad (16) Simon Duguay (17) Edouard Vincent (17) Zackary Plamondon (16
RHD
Anton Topilnyckyj (18) Isaac Vos (19) Nathan Mossey (18)
A few notes:
-I've listed LHD and RHD in what I feel is a "depth chart order".
-When you watch scouting profile videos on the QMJHL site, it looks like Conrad is playing on the RH side at least some of the time. Maybe he regular plays his off side...which would be great considering this imbalance. But if he's more comfortable on his natural left side he should start there as a 16 y/o rookie
-Kearsey, Michel, and Hinkley are all experienced QMJHL players. Of the three Michel strikes me as the guy most adept at possibly switching sides. This is just a hunch on my part. I feel he's got more mobility than Hinkley. With Kearsey, I'd leave him right where he is on his natural side during his draft year.
-Maybe we do see a trade of a veteran guy like Hinkley or Michel to bring in more experience on the right side... especially if we see Vincent and/or Duguay show up and show they are ready to play. They are high on Plamondon as well but the smart bet is that he plays U18 for another season before moving to the Q.
-Some talk earlier in the summer about Vos' position in the lineup. I think the lack of RHD depth puts him in a spot where he has to play his way off the team. He's 19 and doesn't have a ton of "at bats" in the league for a second year play. He showed strong improvement in the second half of 22-23.
-I'm not sure where things are at with Mossey. He was highly regarded at draft time. But he doesn't look to have played a dominating role with the Knights last year. Injuries last season really impacted how he progressed during the season. He lingered and lingered in camp last year, but being a local guy, I'm guessing that he's kept his NCAA eligibility until this point. He hasn't played in any preseason games so far. When he's 18 (likely with a high school diploma) he's probably much more certain if his post secondary education is going to happen in Canada or the US and he should have a pretty strong idea of what any potential scholarship offers might look like. But, when he's not had the experience in the league, sometimes it can be too big a step for an 18 y/o rookie who really hasn't been tested against QMJHL talent.
Look at how things went for Matt McQuaid. It's the same situation. He played draft plus 1 in MAAA, draft plus 2 at Mount St. Charles, and then debuted at 18. McQuaid was in the unfortunate spot of playing on a very good Islanders team and got shoehorned into playing a spare part role as a forward to keep his spot... far, far less than ideal.
Then another guy who was in a similar situation a few years back was Newfoundland product Greg Kehoe. Kehoe was drafted out of Newfoundland MAAA. At 16 he played with Stanstead College. In his 17 y/o season he signed with Islanders and only played 4 games before leaving. I think he played high school hockey back in St. John's that year and played the rest of his junior hockey in the Newfoundland Jr. B league.
Bottom line, it's a risk if Mossey is our #3 guy on the depth chart on the right hand side. Maybe Conrad plays on the right side.... maybe someone like Michel switches sides.... maybe there's a trade.
Or perhaps they have something significant here in Wilson and he's coming here to fill a role in a spot where we need some reinforcements.

Another thing about free agency ahead of camp....
I am curious to see what they've got in Kyle Powers, the 18 y/o out of Ontario who played with Brockville of the CCHL. He was 52-10-9-19 as a 17 y/o player and has some decent size for his age.
At centre, we'll likely start the season with Morneau-Maruna-Butler as 1-2-3. For the 4th line centre role there are few guys who'll be involved in some competition for the role....
....Brett Arsenault needs to continue to show improvement and that he's ready for the next step as an 18 y/o player
... Jarrett Todd will be 19 and needs to come into camp looking like a player with 2 years experience in the league. Obviously injuries have been a factor in Todd's development
....Evan Nicholson is coming in at 17 looking to earn a spot.
Powers should be right there in the mix competing for a role on the 2023-24 team... .and maybe even we see two of the names listed above part of the final roster. You can't have too many centres!

There was a big trade in the MHL this week that resulted in the Western Capitals picking up Isaac Vos and his brother Reid Vos from the West Kent team (this team was formerly the Bridgewater Lumberjacks).
Interestingly enough, the Vos brothers were traded from Yarmouth (where Reid played last year) to West Kent earlier in the spring in another big transaction.
This coming season Reid will be 20 and Isaac will be 19. I would guess that for a deal of this magnitude the Caps would hope to have both brothers in their lineup this season. We wait.

Can’t imagine Vos would stick with us. Assuming Wilson can step in as a 6-7 D man, he’s kind of expendable.

I know that as a 19 y/o player, if Vos is not signed to our roster he needs to go on waivers where he may be picked up by another team, or he may pass through. If he is to stay on our protected list, he must clear waivers.
But if he is claimed, there's no obligation for him to report to his new team. Any player may choose to play at a lower level if he so chooses.
But, I have know knowledge of how this impacts a players education package. Yes, those rules are complicated and they aren't written down anywhere you or I could look them up.

Yes…these rules are more legal than hockey….plus they seem to change frequently too!
