Am I the only one who thought the press conference was odd? Hasn't the team basically been for sale for years now? Wouldn't any local buyer interested in the team have had multiple opportunities to buy it over the last decade plus? Unless something behind the scenes has now changed (significant reduction in asking price, long term City subsidies now being offered, etc.), what is different?

The league had an intent with Steve Leal until the sale got quashed at the BOG level.

announced today in the press conference that if the team is sold one of the conditions team is to stay in Bathurst so that is great news, now hopefully more fans can be brought in. Yes they say that until they see who actually steps up. The league is just full of shit when it comes to this stuff. They literally just had a deal with a guy who was moving the team until the BOG stopped it. A poor attempt at a PR spin around what is an awkward situation for the league. They have an ownership group needing out. No local ownership stepping up. And have already engaged with people with clear intent to not keep the team there.

Unless something behind the scenes has now changed (significant reduction in asking price, long term City subsidies now being offered, etc.), what is different? Very odd. I think its desperation at this point. Ultimately the team was doomed after the Memorial Cup didn't result in any carry over at all because of the all in style meaning it was right back to a rebuild. Getting out from under a group of owners means rumors will spread but like you said this is nothing new. If i'm a wealthy citizen in Northern NB I know the team can be had. I can also see the struggle of society and nothing being done to reverse the trend meaning there's no end in site to the fact that average people are having too much month left at the end of their income meaning things like Jr hockey really need to work even harder to attract even less of an entertainment dollar. At some point teams averaging under 2000 cant make long term break even points and teams cant find ways to entertain fans for a $20-$25 price point when the team is also negatively effected competitively by all these factors making it even harder to build or sustain a winning culture. Without anything you've mentioned like subsidies or reduction in price there is nothing new and nothing said should be seen as a positive as it means the group who saves the team are down to a few likely desperate to cut their losses.

The Commish was a New Brunswick tour anyways. Seemed like Titan just wanted to do something to reiterate the point that they aren't going anywhere and they have the league's support.

Make me an offer. I think the whole idea of the PR is to announce that they have hire a firm to look for a buyer.

Ryan Reylonds was looking for a Hockey team before. He likes to buy teams that are in small towns and rejuvenate them. Just saying.

The problem is, from a business valuation perspective, the the Titan are likely worth little to nothing. Business value is typically based on the capitalized value of projected future cash flows ... and unless the rumours of losses going back many years are false, cash flows of nil (or worse yet losses) are not worth anything. The other presumed source of value is that you are buying an exclusive franchise, one of 18 available, and you might argue that the franchise itself will appreciate (or at least maintain) in value over time. But given the long term lack of an interested buyer, I find that argument weak, and made weaker by the league's latest announcement that the team cannot be moved and must be operated as is where is. Best case the current owners find someone willing to take over the team, but I doubt whoever it is will be willing to pay them much ... they have to be resigned to walking away from the money they have sunk in so far and chalk it up to a business loss.

Yeah there's no way to view it through the lense of just a business. You need someone with a passion for hockey, passion for the region, and a desire to be willing to spend on losses to keep the team in the region long term and if everything aligns perfectly maybe you get a 2-3 year period where you're in the black if you string together a competitive core for multiple seasons. But I think we all agree that if that person existed they'd already be the owner. The committee approach was the best they're going to find I think. This is just the league being able to say they did their due diligence with any sale so the next time they go to the BOG for a sale approval they get less push back.

Ryan Reylonds was looking for a Hockey team before. He likes to buy teams that are in small towns and rejuvenate them. Just saying. That would be pretty cool, and honestly not a silly idea. Plus he doesn't have the issue of promotion/relegation, so finances would be fairly stable with the team. Who are some potential, realistic buyers in the Atlantic region? Murphys on PEI are doubtful because they had a chance to buy the Islanders and didn't. Maybe someone in the Irving family?
