i wonder if the eagles are in on him Honestly, there's no reason for any decent team not to be. His skillset is unique and he's arguably the top import in the league (barring an oa) in a year where the gap from 1 to 2 could be huge.

Trade window opens this morning
I thought I'd take a look at the organization in terms of where it is and where it is going as the week goes on. I'll start with the non-hockey parts
GM
Anthony Stella has done a very good job with trades. You could argue about the Mann deal (though it was a 2nd and a future 3rd), but he's kept a mix of younger and older players so this cycle seems to be better built for never completely bottoming out.
In terms of drafting, Stella has been up and down. That's pretty much what we've seen in nearly every organization, and part of the problem in previous years had to do with development.
Going forward, I think that Stella has adopted the Georgie principle of knowing what all his options are so that he can pivot in any direction. Having two firsts will give him some ammo to start really building in earnest, but I also believe that he will do what is best longterm for the team in terms of older players.
The biggest flaw with the current regime is loyalty to certain players. Playing a 4th liner/Jr A guy above the 4th line is not helpful at all.
Coaching
This coaching staff is a dramatic improvement over anything the Dogs had in the last cycle save for MacDougall. We've seen good things from the younger D in terms of development. We've seen forwards start to move forward. We might actually have a Q calibre goalie that we drafted.
If this group can continue to develop players, this could be a fun cycle like the first two (as opposed to the infuriating mess that was the last cycle where our goalie spend alone was):
12th rounder (Moody) 3, 6, 10 (Jones) 7 (Pagliarulo) 4 6 (Emond) 7 12 for 12 (Shingarov) McCallum 1 3 4 6 for 7 (Lemieux) 1 1 3 for Akkouche (Hurtubise) Grenier Lemieux 3 3 2 for Daoust Blagden 6 (Couture)

Any news on what happened to Tyler Jay? He was named equipment manager in Bathurst I'm assuming that he was a contract that happened to expire.

I agree loyalty is not what you need if a player is better than another play him don’t look at who he is or what round he was drafted play the best players.

Team Spotlight: Goalies
Saint John now has 4 goalies on their protected list
Robinson - Came into last year as a complete unknown and put up a solid rookie year. Of the Sea Dogs top 25 goalies for wins all-time, he's 24 after his rookie year, but of the guys above him, only Auger, D'Orio, and KSL were drafted by SJ, Patenaude was a FA add at 17, and Mayer was an import. That speaks volumes to the lack of goaltending development over the history of the team.
We'll see if Robinson can handle starter duties and become a quality starter or he settles in as a quality backup, but no matter what, his development has been great for the team.
Girard - Not a lot of fanfare about Girard, but he put up a decent season in Quebec Jr A at 17 (t-5th in Sv%). He and Robinson could be the goaltending duo in SJ this year and I don't think I'd worry at all.
Labbe/Doyon-Cataquiz - Both are NCAA guys. Doyon-Cataquiz is playing in the US and didn't report at all last year and was drafted in the 14th round for a reason (he was rated as the 3rd best G in the draft). Labbe has recently committed to an NCAA program. If either guy reported, they would be a strong competition to Girard.
The draft: Only SJ has a feel for what Labbe/Doyon-Cataquiz will do, but if they aren't reporting, SJ likely needs to use a top 100 pick on a goalie (to make up for no 07s in the pipeline) and should use a later pick on one as well. If SJ can get either to report (or has a way to add an 07 to the system), then drafting a goalie that early becomes less important and they can follow BPA and let a goalie drop to them somewhere.
In terms of competition, if Robinson and Girard are the only two guys from this group reporting to camp, they should be able to find free agent invites to supplement but they might also be able to convince one of VDO/RN to let them make a camp try-out to a goalie (both teams have a ton of goalies currently listed and even when they cut, they will still probably have too many).

Robinson has shown he can handle the league and deserves to have the #1 job but it would be good to have a good back up to help as the team won’t be strong again this year.

Team Spotlight: Defense
Saint John has lots of D on their protected list and could return up to 8 D
Ianniello, Mann, Tivey - I don't see any way that SJ will go with 3 OA (nor would it make sense), so two of these guys will be here. While I believe that Mann and Tivey are the best 2, if there is a market for either of them, I think SJ has to at least listen (same with Ianniello, but I doubt that there is a market for him)
Bilodeau - Bilodeau was much improved defensively last year and would have done more offensively save for Ianniello being the top PP D. If he is back, he is a key member of this blue line, but he could also be a trade candidate given his age, that he could help another team, and the guys behind him.
Amyot - The growth of Amyot was impressive last year. I see him stepping into a top 4 role this year. Regardless of who else is here, I am excited to see him
Duhamel - He was a mid-season call-up and didn't have as much improvement (how could he in half a year with a lot of 6/7 duty). With a full year here, I expect his game to take another leap. I'd like to see him get top 4 minutes (preferably with Amyot) and let him learn from his mistakes and adjust if need be.
MacLean - I didn't expect the improvement from MacLean. I still have questions about his upside, but he's at least shown himself capable of playing. He's a guy that should be able to play 3rd pair this year and move around when need be.
Richard - He was also a mid-season callup. Like Duhamel, there wasn't as much progression as with MacLean/Amyot which was partially due to half a season up and partially due to role. He was dropped to 4th line/press box late, which gives me some pause.
Of the other guys, Felicio is almost certainly not going to come (supposed to play for UMich this year) but he'd instantly be an upgrade. After that, Bonnet is probably the most intriguing D prospect SJ has. He was rated pretty high before dropping last year. SJ also has a few project D who were not even close to Q ready last year but who with improvements could become Q defenders
The draft: If there is a market to move an OA, I would, but there is no hurry and there is a real chance that SJ will have to cut a D in camp. IMO, one of the non-OA needs to move, because having 7 returning D is not optimal when most of them need plenty of ice-time. I expect that Richard could be available because of his usage last year, but Bilodeau should be available if the right deal comes along.
In terms of actual drafting, Saint John will take D. I expect a D in the first 4 picks and it could honestly be as high as the 8th pick (I expect a quality forward to be highest on SJ's board at 5). My big hope is that SJ doesn't take more D than FW again, because the 1 to 1 ratio is a little ridiculous)
If a D goes at 8, I'd expect it to be either Cossette-Amyot (if he drops) or Chartrand (if he'll report)
At 26, there are a lot of options. If SJ were to acquire more picks (through deals), there would come a point where taking a shot might make sense (for example, if SJ got two more picks before the end of the 2nd, then I would absolutely target one of Taillefer/Rozzi/Dube who are unlikely to report given that if they don't, SJ still has 4 top 38 players for camp (and a 2nd next year if the player is released) and if they do, SJ could get a 1st round talent on an absolute gamble)

Some good information on the D. It will be interesting to see what happens before the draft and during the trade period in December. I feel one of the 20yr will be moved now and another in December. I like Amyot, MacLean and Duhamel and feel they will continue to get stronger this year. I think Richards will be released if they pick up any D in the first 3 picks.

Agree he was a 3rd pick so maybe you can get someone in a similar situation and swap them. When drafting kids at 15 it’s so hard to see where they will be in a few years. I believe the team did well with Amyot and Duhamel picking them in the second round. Maclean is a bonus as he was a late round. You never know maybe they can move Richards for a player who just needs a fresh start and it will work out for both kids.

Team Spotlight: Forwards
Saint John has 15 forwards and technically could have all of them here this year (won't happen)
Laforge - He's been a great character player, but he simply isn't an overager in this league.
Peddle - Peddle had a much better 2nd half in SJ than his first half and showed chemistry with Miller. They could form 2/3 of a quality line for SJ this year
Miller - What a steal! SJ brought in Miller and he showed some real potential. He looks poised for a top 6 role next year.
Beveridge - While Egan only had 19 points, he also showed some great potential and his advanced stats in everything but defense were much better than his raw point output (https://x.com/PuckPreps/status/1798429836551065623)
Groulx - In the half season with Saint John, he always seemed to be the best player on his line. His point totals are a product of his age/ice time/linemates, more than what he can be.
Simek - If Pavel is back, he's a quality two-way 2nd/3rd liner. There has to at least be discussion of moving him, though because he is an 05 and SJ is not building around 05s.
Mateiko - Moose had a great year and his development continues to be impressive. He is the best import available and is available to other teams if they want to pay. If not, SJ will keep him until Christmas and see what the market is then.
Reynolds - Darien signed on with the Sea Dogs and put up respectable numbers. He is the best of the bottom 6 guys and might have potential to be more
Beaulieu/Calder/Beaudry/Benoit - These guys appear to be 4th liners based on what they have done. The usage of Beaulieu terrifies me as a fan (him playing on offensive lines and dragging down his linemates). Depending on roster construction, any or all of these guys could become redundant as Saint John adds talent.
Beaudoin - the only non-American forward on the protected list that wasn't on the team last year. Alexis had a very good camp but didn't make the team because of his age. He was the captain of Trois-Rivieres in midget. He's a Beaulieu-type player, though he may have more consistency to his game.
Daley - The forward Saint John drafted in the US draft returned to play his senior year of high school. There seems to be some real potential in Daley and if he comes north, he could surprise some people.
Monteiro - JJ is NCAA committed and played last year in the BCHL. He does not appear to have committed anywhere for this season. He is a goal scorer, who could theoretically jump directly into the top 6 if SJ can find the right linemate, but he is also unlikely to report.
The draft: It would be an absolute shock if Saint John didn't end up with 2 forwards in their first 3 picks and if they end up adding more picks, it is likely that they will add more forwards.
Saint John is likely to add an overage forward, whether it be the rumored Oliver or a guy like Houde (who could be CB's 4th OA).
There's been lots of speculation around Tynan Lawrence (Josh's brother) who, if he was willing to commit, would likely be the pick at 5. In the scenario where he will not, Saint John will have lots of options at 5. Even at 8, there will be very good forwards available.
In the second round, there could be some forwards who drop simply because teams reach for D (and there are a couple who are hinting at NCAA).
Beyond that, there are rumors that Reece Peitzsche wants to play in the Maritimes, so he could be a trade candidate for SJ as a guy who needs a fresh start.
This is the last year of the US Draft, which goes on Saturday at some point after the regular draft (they take a break then do the US Draft).
